Topic: Psylocke: Elisabeth or Elizabeth? Posted: 04-Apr-2012 at 3:44am |

I was bugged by the current X-Force series that spells Psylocke's first name as "Elizabeth." Most of my X-upbringing was 80s/90s and my recollection is that it was spelled "Elisabeth." I see both spellings used online. Which was first? Marvel.com has the Z so I assume they're going with that now. Just wondering when/why it changed.
Poor editors not catching misspellings has always been a major pet peeve of mine...

My 90s X-Men cards had Elizabeth...so the change had to occur in the 90s.

I'm gonna guess that it's just a common error to have it as a "s" instead of "z"..

I thought 'Elisabeth' was the British spelling. I guess becoming a psychic ninja means a letter change in your name.
Although I prefer the 's' myself.......

It started as Elizabeth, then in the middle of his run (around the Outback era) Claremont suddenly used Elisabeth instead. Ever since it's been both apparently.

I appreciate all the replies. After reading them I looked for a generic wiki article on Psylocke and sure enough they had this issue explained:
Created by writer Chris Claremont, Elizabeth "Betsy" Braddock first appeared in Captain Britain #8 (Dec. 1976), published by the Marvel Comics imprint Marvel UK. The original spelling of the character's name was "Elizabeth," though relettering of the UK versions for US reprints would occasionally misspell it as "Elisabeth." [2] This led to spelling inconsistencies throughout future publications. The inconsistency was resolved by Claremont thirty-two years later in 2008 in the series New Exiles, which reasserted the particular spelling of her name as "Elizabeth."
And we all know that if it's on the Internet, it must be true.

I like the z spelling. Z isn't used enough in modern english.

I never noticed such things then my wife would read my old comics off and on. Unfortunately this sort of transposing of letters is pretty common. :)
