Betsy
I've never read this before, but this article and questions is highly interesting, especially considering what all they're doing with Betsy now.
But I put this here for a reason. What do ya'll think would have happened had Betsy died that way, and then subsequently revived due to Phoenix saving her? Would you have preferred things the way they happened in Psi-War, or would you had preferred to see how this would have played out?
Do you also think the current Betsy would be the same? I know it's hard to say, but after reading this..I can't help but to think about the "What If's...." of all these scenarios.

This sounds like a great article for "Behind the X-men". It would have been an interesting development to kill Psylocke off for the Psi-war. Who knows what outcome that would have had for her in the long runa nd when she would have been enevitably resurrected.

One question that I've been wondering about with Betsy is where is the Shadow King right now? Wasn't he locked in Betsy's mind? Did I miss something with the Shadow King? I was trying to remember if he was brought up during Dark Angel Saga. He is just such. Powerful villian and deserves to have a full out Xevent against the Xmen at some point. I know it took a lot for Betsy to keep him at bay.
But to answer the question, she has gotten colder since then but at the same time still have a great deal of love and compassion as shown in Uncanny X-Force. I believe she would still have evolved to this point Down the road.

I believe when she died to the hands of Vargas, he was finally released. He later showed up in the Excalibur series with Dazzler, Juggernaut et al and the 'Shadow X-Men' that he stole from another dimension, and was subdued by Sage!Diana Fox & co. only to later emerge...at that point in time...with...Uncanny X-Force? I know I am missing something in between.

Shadow King also appeared in X-Men: Worlds Apart, because when you have an X-character as the headliner, only Wolverine can have his name right there in the title. Shadow King is always permanently subdued, until he's not, but then he's always said he was basically unkillable so SK's got a pretty good track record there.

Happy to see that the Shadow King will be in the New Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in Uncanny X-Force, he will have direct conflict with Betsy again, so that's cool!

Interesting article. I am a fan of the Psi-War, and am glad it ended the way it did. Besides current issues of UXF, that story was probably the best for characterization for Psylocke in the years after Claremont had left. Her death on the Psi Plane would ultimately cement her status as the third wheel to Xavier and Jean Grey. It's pretty amazing Emma was able to stand out the way she does, yes?
I'm always much more intrigued by the backstory behind the body swap. It always made more sense to me that there were two individuals involved -as I thought transforming Psylocke into having an asian appearance was beyond strange, even consideringthe source material.

The funny thing about Emma standing out is that I think she is written a lot like British Betsy was in regards to being a bit manipulative... I always understood that part of the change was that Jim Lee wanted to draw an asian female ninja type character, but I never got why they didn't just use the already existing Karma who was already off on a quest to find her siblings and just have her powers upped a bit... Claremont said for years that he wanted the New Mutants to be about graduating to the x-men, that would have been an easy step with a re-designed and more dangerous Karma.

See, I disagree. I think British Betsy was as 'ruthless' as she was because she felt that she had to prove herself. In reality, she was part of only the third wave of X-Men, with she, Dazzler and Longshot being seen as 'newbies'... Realistically, whilst Rogue could be seen as part of the same wave, she was a member of the X-Men long before the other three, but still new enough to be considered an outsider compared to people like Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Havok et al...
In that respect, Psylocke needed to prove her worth. She was nowhere near as powerful as people like Jean, Emma or the Professor, and while she was more experienced due to her past with STRIKE, she still wasn't used to working in a cohesive team, and she needed to find her role in the group. This then got amplified after she passed through the Siege Perilous and became a ninja. While both have their ruthlessness and edginess due to necessity, Emma's is a far more pragmatic and practical kind of ruthlessness, whilst Psylocke's is more reactive and aggressive, if that makes sense?
