Thunderbird? Really? What is it with him and that name?
20 years later and I'm still waiting on the Hell's Belles to show back up.

I think the original ideas for Caliban sounded good and Byrne's design is great. But I enjoyed the Cockrum-designed Caliban that came to be, too. Now he's as dead as Willie Evans, though, isn't he? Ouch

Probably, he was one of those ressurected for Necrosha.  He probably re-died when Selene did her Ascension.

I'm loving those chains of events... The name Ariel was not used (other than in "God Loves, Man Kills" for some reason), yet it led to there being a Caliban because of a random Shakespeare name association, yet that Caliban was never used, which led to Kitty and Kurt having a different relationship than eventually planned, then years later not-Ariel is nearly forced into marriage with an all-new, all-different Caliban.

And we get a different Ariel who ALSO has some sort of Shakespeare connection.

Really interesting article this time! Lots of stuff in there I'd never even known about. Pre-Cali looks pretty cool, interesting idea for an 'ugly' character who really was brutal, more so than the actual Caliban.

I had never seen those Caliban designs by Byrne before! After reading the article and looking at that Caliban design over and over again, I started to feel like the character looked somewhat familiar. I was sure that I had seen it before! I'm a "mutant fanatic" and keep a loooong list of mutants with pics and bio information, etc. After a quick look there I discovered that this character DID eventually see print. Byrne introduced the character as Lucas Jackson in Thing #4 in 1983.

Great article -- lots of stuff here I'd never heard of before. The stuff about Caliban being part of the next wave of X-Men is fascinating, and I love those original designs, but the bit about the kid from Fantastic Four was surprising as well. Great research.

The one thing these excellent articles show me is that the comic book process is far more complex than fans think it is. We spend so much time reaming/praising a single writer or artist and its really a team effort that goes through so much altering and such that our simple understanding really ignores alot.

I really like the original idea for Caliban. The thought that we would live in the basement and the X-men would avoid him because of his freakishness bother me a bit though.  Then I thought about it more and figured that's probably the way it would go down, at least for a bit.  Even as mutants the majority of the team were fairly attractive and normal looking, even the freaks like Beast and Nightcrawler were not that bad

The idea that Kitty would hate Kurt for looking slightly inhuman whilst bonding with Caliban for being abominably hideous is infuriating.

When this character was later used by Byrne, he had emotion projecting powers. He could use them to prevent people from fearing him. Maybe this was part of the original intent for the character. It would explain Kitty's behaviour.
