The New Mutants were a new class of students gathered by Professor Xavier during a period of time when he believed the X-Men were dead. Their tutelage began under Professor X before Magneto replaced him as headmaster of Xavier's School. After Magneto turned towards villainy again with the Hellfire Club, the New Mutants operated on their own for a time until Cable arrived and began drilling the teens into a functional strike team. The team soon evolved under Cable's direction into the new team known as X-Force. The original New Mutants have reunited on several occasions since X-Force first formed, and currently operate as an independent squad of X-Men. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
