BIOGRAPHY

Very little is known about the history of the woman called Birdy, not even her real name. A mercenary and an Alpha-class psi-talent, Birdy first surfaced in Hong Kong on a contract against Victor Creed, Sabretooth. Creed was in the middle of a hit on the local Triads when Birdy strolled in and delivered all of the psychic might at her disposal in a single mind blast to lobotomize Sabretooth on the spot. It failed. Instead, Sabretooth effectively made Birdy his personal slave from that point onwards. [Maverick one-shot]

Through intimidation and a probable mixture of physical and psychological torture, Creed made Birdy too afraid to do anything but carry out his commands. Birdy became Sabretooth’s business manager and tactical support for his mercenary work, operating from his estate in Vancouver, British Columbia. Creed valued Birdy, especially for her unique brand of tele-empathic psi-talent, which he nicknamed “the Glow.” Creed’s mind was a mess of animalistic instincts and repressed memories from his time in Team X and the Weapon X Program. In the past, Sabretooth’s savagery often made him too unstable to work with clients. Birdy’s therapeutic mind touch left him clear-headed and kept the beast under control. Now, Victor Creed could rub elbows with a higher class of hired killers, all thanks to Birdy. [Sabretooth (1st series) #1]

Birdy was first seen assisting Mr. Creed when the Hand and Fenris hired him as a consultant for their efforts to stabilize the revived Soviet Super-Soldier, Omega Red, a former target from Creed’s Team X days. [X-Men (2nd series) #6] Next, Birdy and Sabretooth picked up reports about the Hand trafficking in mutant children and intended to snatch the kids to find their own buyers. The field was already crowded with Lady Deathstrike working for the Hand, Omega Red working for the Russian buyers, and Wolverine and Jubilee trying to save the children. When the Hand escaped with the merchandise, Birdy convinced Wolverine and Sabretooth to work together and recover the kids, then deal with their issues afterwards. They chased the traffickers from Shanghai to Korea, but the mutant girls Yurei and Hino freed themselves and teleported away from all their pursuers. Birdy took a grumbling Creed home empty-handed. [X-Men: Legends (1st series) #8-9]

Birdy made a genuine effort to exorcise Creed’s demons, either to make her life easier or find meaning in her captivity. She communed with the memory of young Victor, a child with instincts he didn’t understand, chained in the basement by a father who thought he was a devil. Sabretooth didn’t want inner peace, though… he wanted to quiet the pain so he could be a more effective killer. Eventually, Victor’s abuse grew too much for Birdy to stand, and her hatred outgrew her fear. She took a contract from the Tribune to shut down security for the Vancouver mansion and leave Creed vulnerable for abduction. Sabretooth’s senses detected the threat early enough for him to put up a fight, but the Tribune’s men still managed to restrain him successfully. Sabretooth screamed a warning at Birdy that he would escape and find her, sooner or later. [Sabretooth (1st series) #1]

Sure enough, the Tribune had plans for Sabretooth. He had a hyperthermite bomb surgically implanted in Creed’s chest with a 48-hour timer, just long enough for Victor to carry out a hit against the mutant shape-shifter, Mystique. Creed returned to Vancouver and caught Birdy before she abandoned the homestead. He forced her back into his service, with the implied threat that he may end up killing her when the mission was over anyway. They found Mystique in Paris, where Raven revealed she was secretly an old lover of Victor’s, once named Leni Zauber, and they shared a son. Mystique believed Graydon Creed was the Tribune who hired his father to murder his mother, because poor Graydon was born a human, not a mutant. [Sabretooth (1st series) #2-3]

Sabretooth and Birdy left Mystique behind and tracked Graydon to the Gee Cee Group of Investment Bankers in Manhattan, secretly a division of the Friends of Humanity. Victor fought his way into the Tribune’s lair and got close enough for the hyperthermite’s blast radius to be an issue for his antagonists. He forced the Gee Cee’s surgeon to guide him through clawing the bomb out of his own chest without detonating it, then disposed of the explosive. Sabretooth confronted Tribune face-to-face, and ordered Birdy to connect them telepathically so he could witness how Graydon grew up to hate mutants like his parents. Victor refused to believe a sniveling worm like Graydon was his son, but then Birdy got too close. Graydon pulled a knife and stabbed her to death, laughing that Victor would no longer be able to control himself without Birdy to provide “the Glow.” Disgustingly, this is what convinced Sabretooth that Graydon was his blood, and he respected him enough to leave him alive. [Sabretooth (1st series) #4]

Graydon’s assessment was correct, for without Birdy’s “Glow,” Sabretooth’s behavior quickly degenerated. The withdrawal from her moderating psychic influence left Creed’s animal side even more savage than before. Sabretooth became like an addict, killing out of compulsion rather than intent. This loss of control gave even Victor Creed pause and he ultimately sought sanctuary and treatment for his urges from Charles Xavier and the X-Men. [X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #3]

Birdy was eventually resurrected on Krakoa at the suggestion of Destiny. Irene Adler apparently saw a need for Birdy in the near future and showed some empathy towards giving her a new life free from Creed’s influence. [Sabretooth (3rd series) #5] Indeed, Birdy proved to be a valued addition to Krakoa’s response services. She joined the Marauders’ emergency rescue division, using “the Glow” to calm people found in disaster areas and help them through their distress. [X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #44] She also worked with the Legionaries, Nightcrawler’s civil response force on Krakoa that assessed violations of the Three Laws and provided crisis management beyond those limitations as well. As a counselor, Birdy worked with individuals who were stressed or uncomfortable with their circumstances before their troubles erupted in law violations. [Legion of X #3-4]

Birdy used her skills as a counselor and therapist to help Aurora manage her dissociation and process past traumas. When the Progenitor Celestial started making judgments on the human race, many were thrown off by its rulings or anticipated rulings. With the approval of Captain Pryde, Aurora encouraged the Marauders to work with Birdy and resolve their concerns before returning to the field. Birdy worked with the oneiromancer Somnus to carry out her therapy sessions in the realm of dreams, further extending the relative time involved. As a result, the entire team completed extensive, individual therapy sessions with their combat psychologist in under ten minutes of real time. Birdy helped the team confront their demons and used the Glow as a salve to grant them all a positive bill of mental health. [Marauders (2nd series) #6]

For a time, Birdy’s story was a tragedy and a cautionary tale. Thanks to Krakoa, she got a second chance and established how anyone can shine when given the proper outlet for their abilities.
