BIOGRAPHY - page 2
Months later, Goldballs was a member of the X-Men when Cyclops investigated a call for help at Muir Island. They found Jamie Madrox dying at the scene, overcome by a new form of sickness termed M-Pox, the results of mutants being exposed to the Terrigen Mists. The Terrigen still lingered on Muir, infecting Goldballs and Cyclops as well. Scott Summers died on the scene, and Fabio was left extremely ill, convalescing in the care of Doctor Hank McCoy. [Death of X #1-2]
Fabio's exposure to M-Pox did not turn out to be terminal, but his brush with death led him to separate from the X-Men for a time. He decided to take time off from the celebrity and craziness of a super-hero lifestyle, and enrolled at the Brooklyn Visions Academy to finish school. His brief brush with fame from the Hero Squad and the X-Men made him a minor celebrity at school, especially to his classmate Ganke Lee. Fabio's body-positive image as a super-hero really spoke to Ganke, but it also caused him to lose his cool. In their first conversation, Ganke outted his best friend Miles Morales as Spider-Man to Fabio, because he thought they would be cool together. Despite this lapse in discretion, Miles and Fabio DID become friends, and Fabio moved into their triple room in the dorms. [Spider-Man (2nd series) #3-6]
Although he was mostly retired as Goldballs, Fabio became a confidant for Miles and Spider-problems. During the second Superhuman Civil War, Miles was the subject of one of the Inhuman future profiler Ulysses' visions, and he went missing. In addition to his teammates from the Champions looking for him, Ganke got Fabio to join the search along with Lana Baumgarter, aka Bombshell, another of Miles' teen hero friends. They patrolled together searching for Miles, and Fabio developed a crush on Lana. [Spider-Man (2nd series) #9]
A few weeks later, Bombshell was sent to the hospital by the mob boss, Hammerhead, after she tried to stop him from shaking down debtors. Miles found out about it first and flew into a rage to go after Hammerhead as Spider-Man for revenge. Ganke and Fabio followed in his wake, and Fabio suited up as Goldballs to help out, particularly because it was for Lana. He found Hammerhead in his club getting the upper hand on Miles. Goldballs went POINK and unleashed a flurry of spheres, including his biggest ball yet, and single-handedly defeated one of the classic Spider-Man's old villains. Goldballs pulled Miles out of the club, and he and Ganke got him to his mother, and then to the hospital for treatment. While Miles was getting checked out, Fabio went to sit with Lana. She had seen on the news how Spider-Man went to avenge her against Hammerhead. Fabio eagerly started to tell her how he saved the day after that, but Lana interrupted to say how she was in love with Miles, and figured this meant he was in love with her. [Spider-Man (2nd series) #17-18]
Fabio was crushed by this and had a hard time deciding what to do. He moved out of Miles and Ganke's room at Visions Academy without an explanation because he was afraid he'd have to see Miles and Lana together all the time after that, and didn't think he could handle it. [Spider-Man (2nd series) #19] After going home for a while, Fabio returned to Visions Academy but kept his distance from Miles and Ganke. When he saw Miles hanging out with Barbara Rodriguez, though, Fabio got incensed at the idea Miles was two-timing Lana and confronted him about it. A flummoxed Miles told Fabio he wasn't into Lana, and they hadn't even really talked since the hospital. They weren't dating and never had been. Fabio was embarrassed and made amends with Miles and Ganke. [Spider-Man (1st series) #234] After Miles was injured fighting the Sinister Six in Latveria, Goldballs was seen in his hospital room with Bombshell and the Champions, watching over him as he rested. [Spider-Man (1st series) #240]
When the X-Men went to war with two Omega-class mutants named Legion and X-Man, Goldballs was assembled with nearly the entire roster of X-Men past and present to confront them. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #9-10] Not long thereafter, however, Fabio returned to the X-Men in an entirely new and unexpected capacity. The X-Men revived the idea of a mutant homeland, crafting the sentient island known as Krakoa into a mutant nation. Krakoa was able to cultivate new pharmaceuticals, sold through Charles Xavier's private corporations and the Hellfire Trading Company, to ensure leverage so that Krakoa was recognized by the United Nations as an official nation-state, with all mutants being able to claim amnesty and citizenship. Among the many new innovations the X-Men brought forward was the means to conquer death itself, and it all started with Goldballs.
A further study of Fabio's abilities determined that his "balls" were actually highly condensed organic matter containing mutant genetic material... effectively, "eggs." Although unviable in their natural state, these eggs were the impetus for Krakoa's resurrection protocols. Now allied with Mister Sinister, the X-Men had access to his storehouse of DNA samples for every mutant on Earth, now willingly restocked by Krakoa's citizens. These genetic sequences could be injected into Fabio's eggs, and Omega-class mutants Proteus and Elixir created a unique interaction. Proteus could bend reality to make the eggs genetically viable, while Elixir's bio-kinesis integrated the genetic sample into Fabio's base mutant organic material, leading to a genetic reconstruction of any mutant based on their sample, far better than any existing form of cloning. Eva Bell then used her powers as Tempus to accelerate time around the egg pods, growing an adult body based on the DNA in a short span. This entire process was guided in perfect synergy by Hope Summers and her inherent connection to all mutant powers. Thanks to Cerebro, Charles Xavier also had a cognitive back-up of every mutant's mind on file, which he could telepathically implant in this new body, fully restoring a dead mutant to life in both mind and body. Fabio, Proteus, Elixir, Tempus and Hope -- together they became known as the Resurrection Five, figures of celebrity and almost religious reverence in the growing nation of Krakoa. [House of X #5]
The X-Men lead exciting lives even in the calmest of times. In addition to ongoing efforts to repopulate the mutant race after the massacres on Genosha and elsewhere, the Five have also brought back several mutants and X-Men who have died recently in service of Krakoa, often more than once. Fabio has partial credit for bringing back stalwarts like Cyclops, Jean Grey and Kate Pryde. The Five have formed strong ties with one another. Their quarters on Krakoa, the Pod, are located in the Akademos Habitat, a series of biomes for younger mutants. Their great work, however, is performed at Arbor Magna, the hatchery where Fabio's eggs bond directly with the mutant soil of Krakoa during growth. Fabio in particular is diligent and dedicated to his work with the Five, and has even begun asking others to call him "Egg" instead of "Goldballs," representing his change in status.
...It's unlikely to stick. But who knows? Fabio Medina has quickly grown from the least likely mutant to ever accomplish anything into a revered figure for an entire culture. Go Goldballs!
