A year later, Fitzroy had gone free and continued running his dens. His spoiled antics eventually caught up to him, though, as he was targeted for arrest again by the X.S.E. By this point, Trevor knew his father was growing tired of his embarrassments, and would not use his influence to protect Fitzroy. On the run from Bishop and Omega Squad, Fitzroy inadvertently discovered the Morlock Tunnels and fled underground. Their pursuit led them to old Salem Center and into the long-lost Ready Room of the uncanny X-Men. Despite the chase, Fitzroy was caught and shut down by the Forge 3000 neutralizer collar.

In the Pool maximum security prison, Fitzroy was isolated from his fellow inmates in solitary to prevent him from charging his powers. However, a stray rat in the cell provided an opportunity for escape. Draining the animal gave Fitzroy enough juice for a quick hop into the main prison complex, allowing him to kill several guards and charge himself up even further. A full scale riot kicked off thanks to Fitzroy's escape, causing chaos and confusion. Fitzroy freed Bantam to serve as his temporal anchor and risked a personal jump back in time, far enough to escape the consequences of his actions. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #287]

Fitzroy found himself 80 years in the past, during the era of the legendary X-Men. He felt it was impossible to return to his own era and face his father and the X.S.E. Therefore, Fitzroy intended to establish himself in that time period by becoming part of the Upstarts competition. A "billionaire boys’ club," the Upstarts competed with one another to see who could kill the most mutants, with new quests and arbitration of the contest being performed by the omnipath known as Gamesmaster. Each member put up their own resources as stakes, and Gamesmaster hinted at an even greater prize at the conclusion of the competition, from ultimate power to true immortality.

Although he was personally trapped in the past, Fitzroy nevertheless managed to mine and scavenge from his own timeline, using his temporal portals to call back his personal battle armor, futuristic Sentinels loyal to him, and other technology useful for his efforts. He allowed Bantam to continue to serve as his chronal custodian as well. Fitzroy maintained numerous portals in stasis to be reopened if necessary, but his constantly changing supply of excess life energy made it difficult to both maintain the portals and keep them dormant at the same time until he truly needed them. Bantam, for all the abuse he took from Trevor, proved useful in cataloging these portals.

Trevor Fitzroy's ambitions ruled him in any age, and he boldly announced his intent to overthrow Shinobi Shaw as current leader of the Upstarts. Shinobi might have taken Trevor's pronouncement more seriously if he knew Fitzroy was likely his own bastard grandson, for ambition had always been a strong family trait in the Shaws. Shinobi's lead in the Upstarts came from murdering his own father, the Black King Sebastian Shaw, after the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle were named by Gamesmaster as the first group of targets. Fitzroy chose to target the former White Bishop, Donald Pierce, and his cadre of cyborg Reavers in the Australian Outback.

Fitzroy's Sentinels acted on his behalf, cutting their way through Pierce's Reavers to reach the man himself. Pierce only escaped by ordering his teleporter Gateway to take him to the one responsible for the attack. At the same time, Fitzroy was making his own strike against the Hellfire Club itself, hoping to kill the reigning White Queen, Emma Frost. Fitzroy began with Emma's student warriors, the Hellions, killing both Jetstream and Beef within minutes of his arrival. Fitzroy was not the first Upstart assassin to attack Frost, however, and she had reached out to the X-Men for an alliance that very night.

The veteran mutant heroes may have turned the tide against Trevor Fitzroy, if not for the sudden arrival of Donald Pierce and three of Fitzroy's Sentinels, pursuing him through Gateway's portal. The Sentinels became unexpected reinforcements for Fitzroy's assault, disabling Pierce, striking down Frost and moving on to the Hellions and X-Men. The remainder of the Hellions were dispatched by the Sentinels, and many were killed while the rest were captured as future fodder for Fitzroy's mutant powers. Jean Grey of the X-Men was also seemingly killed by the Sentinels, allowing Fitzroy to escape with his prizes while the X-Men mourned their loss. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #281]

At Shinobi Shaw's penthouse, Fitzroy arrived with his Sentinel bodyguards, the disassembled body of Pierce and the comatose frame of Emma Frost as proof of his victory. Trevor had named Shinobi's family signet ring as his prize for this successful round of the game, a trophy Shinobi had never truly agreed to. Regardless, Fitzroy had his Sentinels hold down Shaw and take the ring by force, cutting off his ring finger in the process. (There is no doubt that by taking this ring, Fitzroy in some small way felt he was claiming his legitimacy in the Shaw family.)

Fitzroy returned triumphant to his base in the Arctic Circle, hidden inside an iceberg. He continued to supplement his forces from the future, using the lifeforce of the Hellions as collateral to extract Lifers back from his own time and the maximum security detention cells in the Pool. Arrivals like Burke and Stylles agreed to serve Fitzroy in exchange for their freedom. Those like Kroeger, who tried to renege on their agreements, were fed back into the time portals and killed. Fitzroy was caught off-guard when Emma Frost awoke and escaped from custody, demonstrating telekinetic powers at the same time. Trevor was unaware that Jean Grey saved her own life by transferring her consciousness into Frost's inert body back in New York. Jean's awakening also allowed Professor X and the X-Men to pinpoint her location, busting their way into Fitzroy's headquarters.

Seeking to reclaim his advantage, FItzroy absorbed the energy from dozens of Hellions and low-level prisoners, allowing him to create his largest temporal portal to date. A grand total of 93 Lifers were drawn back in time from the Pool to serve as Fitzroy's minions, flowing into the battlefield to confront the X-Men. Trevor believed the sheer number and variety of new mutant henchmen would surely overwhelm the X-Men given time. In his haste, however, Fitzroy neglected to account for the exact number of Lifers being transported, which ended up being fewer than the Hellions he drained. This meant the time portal was still charged for more arrivals after all the prisoners had made it through. And so, little Lord Fitzroy suddenly found himself face-to-face with Bishop and the X.S.E.'s Omega Squad, coming back through the portal themselves in pursuit of the jailbreakers. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #282]

Despite having spent weeks, perhaps even months in the X-Men's era, Fitzroy's time portals were raiding the Pool from the same night he escaped. Consequently, from Bishop's perspective, Fitzroy disappeared only minutes before Omega Squad followed through the time portal after the Lifers. Although initially terrified to see Bishop again, Fitzroy laughed when Omega Squad tried to send one of the prisoners back through the time portal, only to see him hopelessly deconstructed in the backlash. These were one-way portals, Fitzroy told Bishop, laughing that his nemesis and his men were here to stay.

A chameleon ploy by his men allowed Fitzroy to slip away from the X.S.E., but men in the employ of Shinobi Shaw ambushed him and pulled him to... "safety." Shinobi reclaimed his ring from Fitzroy, who tried in vain to throw his weight around as new leader of the Upstarts. With the arbitration of the Gamesmaster, however, Fitzroy only received points from the destruction of Donald Pierce, not the merely comatose Emma Frost. The Reavers and Hellions proved to be of only minor point value and added to his tally, but did not maintain his lead. Shinobi toasted with his friends to being back on top, but Fitzroy swore to once again claim his throne. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #283]

[Note: In his first arc, Trevor Fitzroy was identified as an Englishman by Shinobi Shaw. He also supposedly had a personal grudge against Emma Frost for some unknown reason, and allegedly could not travel through his own time portals. None of these aspects of his character would be mentioned again.]
