Brief Description:

Wolverine goes to his homeland Canada. There he is confronted by his former group, Alpha Flight. This causes him to remember his origins. Meanwhile, Jean telepathically searches for the AWOL Professor Xavier to no avail. Finally, Xavier and Magneto are confronted by a Savage Land mutate named Vertigo, and she has a vendetta against Magnus.

Full Synopsis:

Wolverine watches the sun rise in Canada. He is searching for his old friend Heather Hudson. Instead he is confronted by her husband, Vindicator. He reveals that is was he, not Heather, who summoned Wolverine. He wants Logan back on his team, and he has the rest of Alpha Flight to back him up.

Vindicator begs Wolverine to come along peaceably; but that wouldn’t be Logan’s style, now would it? He attacks Alpha Flight, but not as fiercely as he may have had they not been his friends once. Alpha Flight is also conflicted over the confrontation. They want Wolverine back, but they do not want to hurt hum. One by one Puck, Sasquatch, Snowbird, Vindicator, and Shaman are repelled. But when Northstar and Aurora pick him up and start to fly, he forces them to collide and drop and him. He lands gracelessly in a tree.

While Alpha Flight searches for him, Wolverine remembers his beginnings. He recalls being stuck in the lab and the operation they performed to bond the adamantium to his bones and claws. The doctor asked him if he was all right and explained the experiment. Claws burst out of Wolverine’s knuckles, and he went berserk. He destroyed the lab and most of everything inside. Then, he ran off into the night.

At the mansion, Jean is telepathically searching for Xavier. In her mind she sees Domino, Nightcrawler, Archangel, Cannonbll, Psyloche, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch; but no Xavier. Gambit, Rogue, and Cyclops watch pensively as she concentrates.

Back in Canada, Shaman finds Wolverine and has the tree shake him loose. This time Alpha Flight successfully apprehends him, but it is obvious they do not want to injure their former teammate. Wolverine protests, “Vindicator, you know I won’t work for you.”

To which Vindicator replies, “It is not you they want, but the secret you keep inside.”

Wolverine wakes up in a lab shackled to an examining table. He sees Vindicator and demands answers. Vindicator coolly explains that he is not in charge. His wife, Heather, is. Wolverine is furious at Heather since she is one of his closest, old friends.

Wolverine recalls how he first met Heather and Vindicator. They were hunting in the woods when a feral Wolverine attacked them. Heather only managed to subdue him after three tranquilizers. When Wolverine regained consciousness, Heather tried to talk to him but he was still in berserker mode. She was able to reason with him after appealing to his humanity. Over the months, Heather and James (Vindicator) helped, fed, and dressed Logan. They even introduced him to General Chasen and Alpha Flight which Wolverine initially joined.

Back in the present, Wolverine feels betrayed. Heather insists that she is doing it for the good of the country and for Wolverine’s own safety. General Chasen enters and explains his intentions. The Canadian government tried to replicate Wolverine’s experiments multiple times unsuccessfully. Chasen wants to examine Logan and find out how he survived.

Meanwhile in the Savage Land, Xavier and Magneto are confronted by Vertigo. She hints that all mutates in the Savage Land are Magneto’s creation. She uses her high-frequency sound to nearly knock them off of a cliff, but they swing away by severing a nearby rope bridge.

In Canada, Wolverine is faring little better. He is obviously in pain much to Heather’s dismay. (He is in so much pain that Jean vaguely senses it in Westchester.) Heather stops the probe saying that it is pointless. She has probed deeply and provided no information. Chasen insists that they surgically remove Logan’s skeleton. Heather quits in disgust. Even Vindicator seems uncertain.

Nearby the rest of Alpha Flight is eavesdropping, and they are unhappy. They thought they were getting Wolverine as a teammate, not as Chasen’s lab rat.

In the lab, Vindicator and Wolverine argue. Vindicator feels that Wolverine betrayed him. Wolverine feels that Vindicator used him, and these examinations prove it.

Suddenly Sasquatch, Snowbird, Puck, Aurora, and Northstar break down the lab door. They are angry about being lied to. Alpha Flight frees Wolverine from his shackles, and together they make short work of the security forces. Then Vindicator and Wolverine square off. Vindicator admits that Chasen was wrong, but Wolverine is still a part of the team and not allowed to leave. Logan disables Vindicator’s force field and prepares for the killing blow when Heather intervenes. She begs him not to kill her husband. Wolverine acquiesces for her sake, but if any of Alpha Flight ever come after him again, “all bets are off.”
