Hawkeye has often struggled with deafness. In Hawkeye #4, he used a sonic arrow to damage his own hearing to avoid Crossfire's sonic brainwashing device. Clint wore special hearing aids designed by Tony Stark after that, but Avengers Annual '99 reported that his hearing was restored after passing through the Heroes Reborn universe. However, Hawkeye Vol. 4 introduced a retcon where Clint experienced hearing loss as a child, partly as a result of abuse.

Hawkeye died as a result of the Scarlet Witch's breakdown in Avengers #502. Wanda brought him back during the House of M reality before dispersing him again. He was permanently restored to life at the conclusion of that event.
