Toad has always had an unstable mutation, thanks to his infancy in the Black Womb Project as explained in X-Men: Forever #4. He was originally only a bumbling leaper. It was decades later that he manifested self-confidence and his paralysing excretions with X-Force (1st series) #5. He briefly showed the ability to communicate with amphibians, as well, explained as a mutant called Surgeon playing with his genes in Generation X (1st series) #19. The true potential of his genes was unleashed in X-Men: Forever #6 by the technology aboard Prosh.
