Beta Flight was originally the second tier of Department H's training program for superhuman operatives, above Gamma Flight but before the field team, Alpha Flight. Trainees were given individual costumes for the first time in Beta Flight, and had to pass a series of psychological tests before qualifying for Alpha Flight duty. They disbanded when Department H lost its funding, behind the scenes between Uncanny X-Men #140 and Alpha Flight (1st series) #1.
