After he claimed the Infinity Gauntlet, Adam Warlock decided its power was too great to be wielded by one being. He chose to disperse the Infinity Gems amongst a team of individual charged with watching over the gems, and ensuring they were not reassembled again. The Watch included Adam Warlock with the Soul Gem, Pip the Troll (Space), Gamora (Time), Moondragon (Mind), Drax the Destroyer (Power), and Adam's secret ally Thanos (Reality).
During Infinity Wars, a loose gathering of Infinity Stone wielders also identified as the new Infinity Watch. This included Adam Warlock (Soul), Doctor Strange (Time), Turk Barrett (Mind), Black Widow (Space), Captain Marvel (Reality), and Star-Lord (in possession of the Power Stone).
After Infinity Wars, the Stones were reincarnated within the bodies of individual people. These avatars eventually gathered as another Infinity Watch with Overtime, Star, Multitude, Apex, Quantum, and Colleen Wing represented. Mistress Death was reborn as a seventh stone, the Death Stone, personified by Phil Coulson as well.
