The Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane was an asylum in Westchester County, New York. Beginning with the 90s Spider-Man titles, it has served as a stand-in for Arkham Asylum in the Marvel titles. Usually headed by Dr. Ashley Kafka, Ravencroft was the holding facility for Carnage and other super-powered villains who were too mentally unwell for Riker's or the Raft. Early staff included reformed "monsters" like John "Manwolf" Jameson and Edward "Vermin" Whelan. Wilson Fisk took direct interest in Ravencroft as Mayor of New York, staffing it with Karl Malus, Peepers, Norman Osborn, Taskmaster, Scorpion, Moonstone, and Hobgoblin, while Jameson pushed back with his own staff such as Misty Knight and the former D-Man.
Inmates have included Carnage, Shriek, Carrion, Wild Whip, Chameleon, Jackal, Mayhem, Pyromania, Gale, Webber, Mr. Hyde, Grizzly, Man-Bull, Figment, Foolkiller, Ringer, Freak, Hippo, Panda-Mania, Joystick, Bloodshed, Punisher, Mister X, Doppelganger, Coyote, Bushman, Conundrum, Will o'the Wisp, Sandman, Count Nefaria, Grey Gargoyle, Living Laser, Whirlwind, Massacre, Prism, Sun King, Black Star, and many others.
