In the Ultraverse, the cave-dwelling Fire People had developed a Wetware Virus thousands of years ago which induced radical changes in humanity, creating Ultras. The Fire People had a prophecy that the Wetware Virus would produce the "Someday Champions", humans who would bridge the divide between surface dwellers and the People of the Fire. In modern times, a woman rediscovered the ancient technology of the Fire People and the Wetware Virus. She became an urban legend as Wetware Mary, exposing dozens of infants to the virus while they were still in the hospital. Fifteen years later, these babies had become teenagers, and the teenagers had become Ultras, often mutating into strange new forms. Several ran away from home and found one another, becoming a "gang" living on the streets and trying to survive: the FreeX.
