The origins of the young mutant called Blink stretch back to the Victorian era and the vast machinations of the immortal mutant Apocalypse. After leaving Egypt, Apocalypse traveled the world, spawning innumerable offspring. The descendants of Apocalypse called themselves Clan Akkaba and, through the ages, challenged each other in contests to attain the title of “fittest” according to Apocalypse’s beliefs. The fates of this often contentious group were guided by Apocalypse’s servant Ozymandias. After a conflict with Dracula left the Clan Akkaba nearly destroyed, Ozymandias decided to revitalize the Clan himself. He hired a prostitute called Miss Ferguson to have intimate relations with the catatonic Fredrick Slade, one of the only surviving members of Clan Akkaba. Fredrick possessed a form of teleportation which he passed on to his great-great granddaughter, Clarice Ferguson. [X-Men: Apocalypse/Dracula #4]
Little has been revealed about Clarice’s early life. Her powers manifested when she was a teenager and did so quite tragically. When she first used her powers, she was knocked unconscious. When she awoke, she found herself in a pool of blood. At the time, she vowed to never use her powers against another living being again. However, she did not count on becoming the target of the deadly Phalanx in their plot to dominate the planet. Clarice was one of a handful of young mutants identified by Charles Xavier as the next generation of potential X-Men. Before he had a chance to contact Clarice and the others on this list, his files were stolen by the Phalanx. The Phalanx abducted Clarice along with three other mutants: Monet St Croix, Paige Guthrie and Angelo Espinoza. They were taken to an abandoned naval ship in San Diego Bay and held for observation and assimilation into their collective. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #317]
The young mutants forged a quick bond during their captivity and worked together to overcome their captors. When their Phalanx captor Harvest revealed himself, Blink did not hesitate to use her deadly powers to try and free herself and her new friends. It was not long before the young 
mutant calling herself Monet St. Croix devised a means of escaping their prison. The Phalanx responded quickly to retrieve their young test subjects and Blink was forced once again to use her powers against them. The quartet held out as long as they were able but were about to be recaptured when a band of mutants led by Banshee arrived to rescue them. Together, they fought Harvest in a desperate bid for freedom.
Despite their best efforts, Harvest rose again driven by his all-consuming hatred for mutantkind. He subdued Banshee and Sabretooth, leaving the young mutants who would one day form Generation X to defend themselves or surrender to the Phalanx. Realizing that Harvest wouldn't 
stop until he killed her friends and eradicated all mutants, Clarice summoned the courage to use her powers against the Phalanx. She caught Harvest and the Phalanx’s floating headquarters in an immense field of teleportational energy that sliced it into countless pieces. Blink herself was trapped within the field. Banshee grasped her and desperately tried to pull her free but it was no use. She was gone, seemingly consumed by her own powers. [X-Men (2nd series) #37]
However, Blink did not perish. Instead, she spent years trapped within an interspatial rift. During this period, Clarice was in constant agony and confusion. Her cries of pain were sensed by Selene, who traveled to the spot where Blink had sacrificed herself. Using her sorcery, Selene freed the girl from her interdimensional prison. Disoriented and in shock, Clarice was assured by 
Selene that all would be well now. Selene also claimed that Emma Frost and the X-Men had been aware of Blink’s torment but abandoned her because they feared her power. The Black Queen offered to help Blink end the endless cycle of pain and betrayal that has been her existence since the manifestation of her mutant powers. Over the course of several weeks, Selene helped Clarice recover and embrace the deadlier side of her powers of teleportation. The once noble and brave young mutant soon became a hardened killer under Selene’s dark tutelage. [X Necrosha: The Gathering]
[Note: Cable (1st series) #151-154 presented an oddly different take on these events. Blink was still freed from her prison by Selene, but this time it was in the middle of the Externals' conflict with Gideon over the High Lord Ascension. When Gideon killed the other Externals, Blink and Selene were forced to ally with Cable and an ad hoc team of mutants he formed to address Gideon. Cable only agreed to help Selene survive if she forfeited her hold on Blink. After Clarice killed Gideon, Selene disappeared and Cable left Blink in Longshot's care. How this is supposed to reconcile with the Necrosha events, or if it was the birth of a new timeline, is unknown.]
Blink proved to be a worthy addition to Selene’s inner circle. She supported Selene unquestioningly, using her teleportation powers to ferry Selene’s forces around the globe. Her loyalty was tested when her teammate, Eli Bard, asked her to help him recover Selene’s spirit blade. Bard had claimed to be in possession of the spirit blade and didn’t want Selene to notice that he had lost it, so he asked Clarice to keep their efforts a secret. Blink feigned cooperation and then teleported Bard to her mistress to report his duplicity.
Following Selene’s orders, Blink teleported the inner circle to Utopia where they battled the X-Men. Emma Frost was distraught to see Clarice, as she had truly believed her dead. However, Clarice didn’t seem to notice. Instead, she proved herself a ruthless opponent as she used her spatial-shearing power to shatter Archangel metallic wings. Once the group retrieved the spirit blade, they returned to Genosha, where Selene completed the spell that would transform her into a true goddess.
When X-Force made their way to Genosha in order to oppose Selene’s coven, Blink faced off against the Vanisher, whose teleportation proved a match for her own. As the battle continued, she watched as Selene’s plot unraveled before her. Seeing her mistress defeated and nearly all her allies killed, Blink teleported away from the battle, having been gravely wounded herself by Archangel. [X-Force (3rd series) #21-25]
