Idie's relationship was not to last, however. Quentin chaffed under the X-Men's new support of him, even making him a teaching assistant at the school. He thought it was only because they were afraid of him, after meeting a future version of Quire who wielded the Phoenix Force. When Edan Younge launched the Phoenix Corporation, Quentin ignored Idie's wishes and went to see what the Corporation was about. They eventually discovered the future Quire was manipulating Younge to alter his past, for he was just as chaffed over being a "sellout" as his younger self. Oya followed Quentin and Younge into the future to confront Quire, and ended up stabbing him with the Blade of the Phoenix, killing the future Quentin to save them. The present Quentin inherited the Phoenix Corporation's holdings from the late Younge, and abandoned Idie and the Jean Grey School, ending their relationship. [Wolverine and the X-Men (2nd series) #1-6]

Oya began acting out in school after that, skipping classes and showing an utter disregard for her studies. She had come to recognize that the X-Men would never kick a problem mutant out into the world merely for not following the curriculum, and so classes were far more optional than they were led to believe. Storm tried to counsel Idie that this behavior was not like her, but Idie challenged whether Storm was even in a position to know what she was like. Yes, Oya was typically quiet and well-behaved, but she was also a multiple murderer who spent a year believing she was a monster from Hell and the X-Men barely took notice. Idie was tired of allowing other people's expectations to shape who and what she was. [Wolverine and the X-Men (2nd series) #7]

Perhaps because of this exchange, Oya chose to leave the Jean Grey School for a time. She and Genesis became friends with the time-displaced original five X-Men and started traveling with them. In a time when Terrigen and M-Pox threatened the mutant population and Storm took the mansion into Limbo as an X-Haven, Idie and her companions just wanted to live as heroes and teenagers without worrying about mutant/Inhuman politics. [All-New X-Men (2nd series) #1-3]

Idie was still Catholic, but she found her faith maturing as she was exposed to the wider world. She no longer considered herself and her friends monsters for being born mutants, and begrudged God for allowing his followers to spread doctrine like that unopposed. Her X-Men found themselves in Paris, and Idie had the chance to visit Notre Dame. She had a one sided argument with God in the cathedral, but still fought to protect it when the X-Men's battle with Blob came too close to damaging the building. Oya found herself facing Blob alone and sent out a half-hearted prayer for salvation. God often works in mysterious ways, but the Avenging Angel who came to her last minute rescue was a pretty clear sign, all things considered. [All-New X-Men (2nd series) #4-6]

On their road trip, Idie and the X-Men spent the day at a mall in San Jose, California. Idie met a nice boy named Ronnie who chatted with her before asking her on a date. Idie hadn't kissed a boy other than Quentin Quire, and relished the idea of doing something normal. Idie and Ronnie had a good time watching a silent film in the park. Afterwards, however, some racist locals provoked them and started a fight with Ronnie. Idie used her powers in their defense, only to discover Ronnie was a mutant as well. The night turned serious as Idie learned Ronnie had been exposed to the Terrigen Mists, but was using his powers to disguise the M-Pox affliction. After another fight with the locals, Oya reached out to Storm, despite their differences, and arranged for Ronnie to get treatment at X-Haven. Despite the complications, Idie appreciated the chance to behave normally, even for a little while. [All-New X-Men (2nd series) Annual #1]

After M-Pox was eradicated and X-Haven returned to Earth, it became the Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach in Central Park. Oya returned to the student lifestyle at the X-Mansion, and was accepted as one of the more promising students working towards becoming a future X-Man. She reunited with Quentin on campus, but their relationship was a thing of the past. While Quire wanted to make amends with Idie, she knew Quentin too well to begin dating again. Kid Omega always felt shackled by the expectations others put upon him, and Oya understood he needed to decide to be a better student and member of the team for himself, rather than feel the weight of her pressuring him to do so. [Generation X (2nd series) #6] In addition to befriending the older students, Idie also became close with Mikaela Banes, one of her newest classmates regrettably (but accurately) nicknamed Spit Girl. [Iceman (3rd series) #8, Uncanny X-Men: Winter's End #1]

Oya was assembled as part of a new team of X-Men trainees including Armor, Pixie, Anole, Rockslide and Glob Herman. Kitty Pryde was escorting them on a simple mission against the Mutant Liberation Front when her powers went wild before disappearing. Pryde's phasing disrupted the Blackbird and caused the team to crash, leaving Oya unconscious and needing medical attention. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #1] This encounter kicked off a major conflict with the X-Man and his Horsemen of Salvation that eventually called for the entire roster of X-Men to assemble for battle. Oya recovered just in time to be included in the call to arms. [Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #9]

The X-Men soon adopted a radical new direction, moving to the island of Krakoa and arranging for it to be declared an official nation-state on the world stage, a mutant homeland for all. The younger mutants formed a commune known as the Akademos Habitat, with different houses representing different classes from Xavier's or other mutant schools. Idie has likely taken up residence in Sigma House, reserved for the Jean Grey School students. [X-Men (5th series) #8]
