Biography

The day that the Scarlet Witch used her powers to wipe out a grand majority of mutant powers on the planet became known as the Decimation, and it was an especially devastating day for the students at Xavier’s. Wind Dancer was one of many students to lose her powers, which she revealed when Julian was making fun of David for losing his powers. She rightfully called out her potential love interest and asked if she was suddenly less beautiful in his eyes now that she was no longer a mutant. Sofia was even more upset when her mentor Dani left the institute, having also lost her powers. Julian tried to comfort and apologize to Sofia through her locked dorm door, but Sofia ignored him and she packed to also leave the school. Sofia must have left separately from the rest of the depowered student body and thus fortunately was not killed when a group of Purifiers blew up the departing bus taking them away from campus. [New X-Men (2nd series) #20-22]

At first glance, a depowered Sofia appeared to be adjusting well to a normal civilian lifestyle as a struggling waitress, and even flirted with a cute customer named Barry. However, she regularly woke up from nightmares of happily flying before being struck back to the ground by the Scarlet Witch. On her commute to work, Sofia demonstrated that her compassion was still fully intact by regularly checking in on a homeless man. He referred to her as his guardian angel and handed her a cell phone someone had paid him to give her. After a mysterious message from an unknown person identified Sofia and her status as a mutant that lost her abilities and her direction, the caller promised to be in touch soon. Later that night, her computer was hacked by the same mysterious person and Sofia correctly identified them as a member of the new vigilante group, the New Warriors, that had been making headlines for its opposition to Tony Stark’s new Superhero Initiative. While Sofia protested the idea of joining the New Warriors, they had correctly pegged her as someone that couldn’t just stand idly by as a civilian.

When Sofia showed up to the meeting spot, she was surprised and irritated that Barry was with the New Warriors. However, she was soon elated to find out that he was actually another depowered mutant formerly known as Beak. He used some form of teleporting device to take them to his team’s hideout where Sofia met their leader, the purportedly deceased Night Thrasher. After his sales pitch, he handed Sofia a device declaring it her future. However, she was not looking to upend her new life for this vigilante justice and asked to be taken home. She still dreamed of her old days with the New Mutants however and, after a heartfelt talk with the homeless man, he told his angel that she should risk it all to go after what she really wanted. After a grueling day of work, Sofia accidentally dropped the device she was given and it exploded into a bunch of webbing similar to Spider-Man’s. It was at this moment that Jubilee showed up to try yet again to recruit Sofia into the New Warriors. She demonstrated her new tech powered gauntlets in order to help convince Sofia that their being depowered was not going to be a problem. [New Warriors (4th series) #1-2]

While Sofia did follow Jubilee back to their base in one of Arcade’s abandoned MurderWorld locations, she was still not convinced she needed to join the team. She pointed out that Jubilee sounded a little desperate to have powers again, to relive the glory days of the X-Men and asked how much she really knew about this new Night Thrasher. Sofia just could not seem to get out of the New Warriors orbit, however, as the Zodiac attacked down the street from her diner job. The Zodiac threw a truck at the diner and Sofia managed to check on her coworkers safety as the New Warriors showed up to take down the astrologically themed villains. Unfortunately, history repeated itself as Sofia was witness to yet another death of a former classmate in Longstrike (formerly Tattoo of the Omega Gang). [New Warriors (4th series) #3-4]

The final straw that caused Sofia to get involved was when she witnessed a young boy, inspired by the New Warriors to dress as a hero and charge at the villains, get blasted by Libra. She removed her waitress apron, rushed towards Scorpio and kicked him in the face with her now windless dance moves. She then wrapped her apron around his eyes, causing the villain to accidentally take out more of his own teammates. This distraction helped turn the tide in the New Warriors favor but Sofia was still hit by a stray blast while trying to help the attacked young boy. While Night Thrasher didn’t want to leave an injured Sofia behind, some paramedics showed up to take her off his hands so the heroes could flee the scene. Sofia was unresponsive, however, and the paramedics did not like her chances of recovery. During her operation at the hospital, Sofia envisioned herself with wings flying toward her mother in heaven. The tearful daughter was allowed no more than a few words with her lost loved one though, as it was not yet her time. She awoke to a shaved head and doctors explaining how lucky she was to have survived such a dangerous concussion. [New Warriors (4th series) #5]

Night Thrasher was taking the loss of his teammate and Sofia’s injury badly enough that he disbanded the New Warriors. Her coworkers visited the recovering Sofia in the hospital but were sent away by a disguised Jubilee, who was determined to talk with Sofia. As the New Warriors were being sent off by Night Thrasher, Jubilee returned with Sofia, who gave Night Thrasher a personalized version of the sales pitch he had given her before about joining the team. She likened the New Warriors to a new version of a family and begged Thrash not to break up another one on her, after so many of her past ones had disappeared. With a little more persuasion from Jubilee, Night Thrasher decided to keep the Warriors going, though he declined to identify himself after everyone else revealed their names to Sofia. [New Warriors (4th series) #6]

After bonding with the rest of her teammates, Jubilee took Sofia to the weapons cache so she could figure out what tech she wanted to use for her new power set. Jono, formerly Chamber, showed up to forbid her from choosing sound powers, as that was his theme. He did encourage her to choose what felt right inside, because as mutants they never before had a choice. Later, during a conversation among all the female members, it became apparent that they all had somewhat bitter feelings towards the X-Men that had abandoned them once their powers had disappeared. [New Warriors (4th series) #7-8]

Sofia held her own on her first mission with the New Warriors against a group of villains called the Alpha Clan. Sporting a force field generator, a couple of energy pistols and six retractable arms, courtesy of the technology of Doctor Octopus, she now went by the moniker Renascence. After a productive hologram training session, Jubilee learned that Sofia was still going to her job. When asked why Sofia didn’t quit and just stay at the base, she answered that she never wanted to be dependent on the superhero life again. While at her job, she was confronted by a Daily Bugle reporter, Kat Pharell, who wanted an exclusive interview about how she saved the New Warriors from Scorpio. After Kat buttered up Sofia with how heroic she had been, she ended up offending Sofia by calling the New Warriors cowards who wouldn’t follow the new initiative rules. Now understanding Kat’s true goal of exposing how dangerous the Warriors actions were, Sofia forcibly ended the interview. [New Warriors (4th series) #9-11]

The New Warriors were having internal conflicts between their leader Night Thrasher and their field leader Jubilee. Thrash had made the tactical decision to abandon some of his teammates on a mission and this was the breaking point for most of the rest of the team. It fell once again to Sofia to play peacemaker and point out that, while Thrash made a bad call, he did it for the right reasons to save the rest of his team. She then helped her teammates rescue the other half of the left behind team. [New Warriors (4th series) #12-13]

When the Skrulls invaded Earth, the New Warriors were on hand to help defend their planet. However, the misgivings about Night Thrasher’s mysterious behavior finally came to a head when he decided he needed to look into other things, rather than help in the defense. Sofia and the others still showed up to save him from a confrontation with the previous members of the New Warriors and learned that the identity of Night Thrasher was none other than Donyell Taylor, previously the villain Bandit and brother to the deceased former Night Thrasher, Dwayne Taylor. This information put his actions into more context and now most of the team shared Sofia’s views of giving their leader the benefit of the doubt. [New Warriors (4th series) #14-15]

The Warriors next mission was a disaster and the team lost two of their friends in an explosion. Afterwards, a surprisingly unperturbed Night Thrasher finally explained his overall goal in forming the team was to gather the necessary technology to create a time machine in order to prevent his brother’s death and thus the Civil War and Superhuman Registration Act. This was Sofia’s breaking point and she was as angry as Jubilee in the realization that they were all just cannon fodder for their leader’s personal gain after all. The team was ambushed by a S.H.I.E.L.D. task force just as they were about to jump back in time, but they managed to all make it into the time portal… only to arrive 30 years in the future instead of the past. This future was a police state run by Iron Man, with suits of his armor patrolling the streets and extreme justice being implemented on law breakers. However, Sofia and the team ran into a future version of Night Thrasher resisting the authoritarian status quo and they were all astonished to find out he was actually… Tony Stark. Meanwhile, the Warriors version of Night Thrasher attemped a solo assassination of Iron Man, and discovered that the man in the armor was actually Dwayne Taylor. [New Warriors (4th series) #16-18]

Sofia and the New Warriors fought alongside Tony to get to a time machine and return home to stop this future from occurring. However, just before their goal, they were stopped by Donyell and Dwayne working together. Things looked grim for the team when all of their tech was taken away and they were imprisoned. Donyell could not be persuaded by his teammates to help them and he stated they would be transported to the N-Zone prison. However, after Tony Stark was tortured and tried to reason with Donyell, Dwayne murdered him in front of his younger brother. This snapped Donyell to his senses and he freed his team. Sofia was the one who found the switch to the N-Zone prison that, when thrown, brought back all of the incarcerated superheroes to fight back against Dwayne’s forces. This gave Donyell the distraction he needed to fatally end his brother’s threat and for the team to jump back to their own time. [New Warriors (4th series) #19-20]

When Krakoa became a utopia for all mutants, Sofia did not come to the island sanctuary right away. Rather, she managed to translate her infectious optimism into becoming a live streamer star via the Mojoverse broadcast network. Circumstances took a dark turn when the Krakoan team tasked with investigating mutant deaths, X-Factor, were sent a pair of bloody ballet shoes belonging to a dead mutant. Feeling obligated to investigate, X-Factor took a trip to Mojoverse where they discovered, with the help of Spiral, that Sofia was the victim. This suddenly became much more personal for X-factor member and Sofia's friend and former teammate, David aka Prodigy. Upon further investigation, it turned out that Sofia was chosen in a cruel vote of whether viewers wished to see Sofia murdered on live steam by another streamer, Adam X. Adam tried to give Sofia a way out but she was determined to give the viewers what they wanted.

When they discovered that Shatterstar was the top streamer of all of Mojoverse, they visited him and he led them to Sofia’s body just before her autopsy live stream was set to air. In a coded message to the team, Shatterstar carefully told them that top citizens were very interested in the autopsy and that they should retrieve the body and leave as soon as possible. It turns out that allies of Mojo very much wanted to utilize the X-gene of the dead Sofia to upgrade the clone population of Mojoverse. Luckily, this tragic story had a happy ending, as Sofia was resurrected with her powers intact on Krakoa, to a welcoming party of all of her former Academy X friends. Later, Sofia helped X-Factor take down the Mojoverse exploitation of mutant streamers and rescue Shatterstar by becoming manager for a mutant band headed up by DJ, Lila Cheney and Dazzler. The all-star line-up put on a concert as a distraction in order for X-Factor to take down Mojo and threaten him to stop the practices that led to Sofia’s death. [X-Factor (4th series) #2-5, 9]

The talents Sofia had gained as a streamer made her a perfect candidate for the position of Public Relations at the newly formed X-Corp. Despite her contributions helping the public accept a mutant-run multi-national conglomerate, she was not seriously considered for a board seat. She was, however, chosen to attend a technology conference with the co-leaders Monet and Angel. She and fellow employee Trinary were excited to join Monet for a talk entitled “Women’s Perspective in Business.” Monet was not enthused to attend this talk but Angel guilted her into going with the pair of young women. [X-Corp #2-5]

With a life marred with tragedy, Sofia finally seems to have found the family and happiness she has always craved. Time will tell where the winds will take her next.
