sentient ecosystem able to command all the living things native to its island body, manipulate its earth and plantlife, drain bio-energies from outside sources, possesses vast psychic power, and can shape humanoid forms for itself out of its own matter with tremendous size, strength, and resistance to injury
Grove was a member of the original mutant society known as Threshold over two billion years ago. Over time, as Threshold fell, Grove evolved to become a living island and ecosystem known as Okkara, as disclosed in Marauders (2nd series) #7-10. A second mutant society was founded there thousands of years ago, overseen by Apocalypse and Genesis. The demons of Amenth severed Okkara into two independent islands. The island of Arakko was drawn to the shores of Amenth, while the island of Krakoa remained on Earth, as seen in Powers of X #4.
Believed to be lost forever in space after first fighting the X-Men, Krakoa turned up alive and well on the Stranger's laboratory world in the pages of Quasar #14-15. Krakoa returned to Earth under unrevealed circumstances prior to House of X #1, and is now serving as a mutant homeland and nation-state in the Pacific.
