Destiny, as well as a number of Brotherhood members, were captured and imprisoned for their crimes. Mystique and Rogue had managed to escape and they formulated a plan to break the rest of their team free. Thanks to her powers, Irene was ready and waiting for the moment to present itself. Over the years, Destiny had begun to perfect the art of using her powers in the immediate future. When the Avengers attempted to stop the prison break, Destiny was able to guide Blob and Pyro in using their powers to take out various members of the heroic team. Unfortunately for her, not every future is set in stone and she failed to react in time to a hex cast from the Scarlet Witch. Irene was knocked out, allowing the Avengers to regroup and capture the escapees. [Avengers Annual (1st series) #10]

Destiny and the other Brotherhood members were deemed too dangerous to be kept in a regular prison, and so they were transported to one which would be better equipped to deal with superpowered individuals. Mystique learned of the time and place Destiny would be transported and she infiltrated the new prison and set the Brotherhood free. Their escape was thwarted by an alien named Rom, who managed to knock out Pyro, Avalanche and Blob, leaving Destiny to escape alongside Mystique and Rogue. Taking shelter from a snowstorm in a seemingly abandoned house, the three women were surprised by the presence of a deadly Dire Wraith called Hybrid.

Destiny could not see the immediate future for it was clouded to her, but she did see how to stop him from attacking them.Uttering Rom’s name caused Hybrid to stop his assault and find a common ground with the women. Destiny struck up a temporary alliance with Hybrid, so that they could defeat Rom, whom she sensed was fast approaching their location. Sure enough, Rom found the group and attacked them, with he and Hybrid going toe-to-toe. As they fought, Destiny suddenly caught flashes of the future Hybrid had planned for them and she was horrified. Alerting Mystique, the three women joined forces with Rom to destroy Hybrid, with Rogue making a particularly noble gesture to ensure victory. Afterwards, Rom allowed the three women to leave, without returning them to the authorities. [Rom #31-32]

Destiny, Mystique and Rogue set their sights on the X-Men in revenge for foiling their assassination attempt against Senator Kelly. Taking the fight to Angel, the only publicly known member of the team, they attacked him whilst he was flying around New York with a date. Unbeknownst to them, his date was a fellow mutant Dazzler, and the trio were not prepared to fight her. Reeling from another loss, the women regrouped but Rogue was starting to become brash and impulsive, something which was concerning Destiny. Rogue was starting to struggle under the weight of Carol’s memories and powers, as well as the inability to control her own absorption powers. Irene and Raven tried to coach Rogue through her issues but something was troubling Destiny, as she was unable to see certain paths the future might take. One morning, it all became clear in a flash and she could see a great tragedy happening involving Rogue. Rushing to Rogue’s bedroom, she discovered that the young girl had run away from home and headed to the X-Men to seek help with her powers. [Dazzler #22-23, 28, Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #170]

Mystique was furious, believing that Rogue had been brainwashed into joining the X-Men by Xavier. Destiny tried to talk sense into her, but it did not help. Instead, Mystique began to prepare herself to a battle of a lifetime to break Rogue free of the X-Men’s influence. Destiny gathered the rest of the Brotherhood and created a diversion in New York, drawing the X-Men’s attention away from their mansion. This allowed Mystique the opportunity to slip in and confront Rogue. Rogue pleaded her case and, despite many reservations, Mystique allowed her to stay with the team and she went back to Destiny empty handed. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #177-178]

A short time later, Destiny saw another vision that involved Rogue losing her powers. As the young girl was a criminal in the eyes of the law, a government task force wanted to use a power neutralizer on her as a show of force to all super-powered criminals. Destiny confronted Mystique with her vision and the two were at odds as to what to do. Mystique was inclined to let Rogue be depowered in the hopes she would leave the X-Men and return to her family. Irene did not agree with the course of action, as she believed Rogue should be informed of the plan so she could make her own choice. Mystique reluctantly went along with Irene’s wishes and made contact with Storm to inform her of the government’s plan for Rogue. She needn’t have worried though, as Storm would go on to intercept the neutralizing gun and was depowered instead of Rogue. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #185, Marvel Fanfare (1st series) #40]

With Rogue in the care of the X-Men for the foreseeable future, Destiny and Mystique took a look at their current path and decided a life of villainy wasn’t suitable. Mystique approached Val Cooper, a government liaison, and offered her the Brotherhood’s use for full pardons for all their past crimes. Val accepted and the Brotherhood became Freedom Force; and their first mission was to apprehend Magneto. Confronting the master of magnetism, Destiny was essential in predicting his movements, as well as those of the X-Men who were trying to stop Freedom Force. She was soon removed from the fight by Shadowcat, but it was an event she knew was coming. She could see all the outcomes of the fight and was correct in the belief that Magneto would be captured by Mystique. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #199]

Freedom Force’s next target was the young Rusty Collins, who was currently hiding out amongst the newly formed X-Factor, who in turn were going under the guise of the X-Terminators. Destiny and the team confronted X-Factor, and the precognitive woman struggled to get any clear visions of the immediate future due to the presence of Jean Grey. When Rusty fled into the tunnels under New York City, Freedom Force followed and Destiny was suddenly overwhelmed with visions of death. Freedom Force eventually gave up on the hunt and left the tunnels due to the pleas of Destiny. Had the team stuck around then, they would have surely been caught up in the Marauders’ mutant massacre of the Morlock’s living in the sewers. [X-Factor (1st series) #8-9]

Soon enough, Destiny would receive a terrifying vision that would shake her to her core. When checking the possible futures for any threat to Rogue, Destiny found complete oblivion and surmised that there was certain death in the X-Men’s future. Mystique tried to warn Rogue of the impending doom Destiny saw but the young girl was adamant that she wanted to stay with the X-Men. Tracking the team down to Dallas, Destiny and Freedom Force confronted them and tried to forcibly stop them from enter the Eagle Plaza Building. Irene’s visions were becoming clearer and narrower; she knew for certain that whoever was in the building by the time dawn broke would die.

Soon enough, the cause of the great calamity became clear, as the sky tore open due to the Adversary, an ancient supernatural being looking to destroy the world. Despite all this, Destiny saw a small glimmer of hope for the world in the timelines, though there was still no saving Rogue or the X-Men. Sure enough, the superhero team sacrificed their lives to stop the Adversary, with Destiny losing her adoptive daughter in the process. The only survivor of the group was Forge, who had used the X-Men’s souls to cast a spell to stop the Adversary. Mystique would go on to hold a grudge against Forge for a long time to come but, due to her power of sight, Destiny knew the man had made the only choice he could. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #223-227]

The world-ending visions didn’t stop there for Irene, though, as she could now see a world overrun by demons. Knowing that the young mutant Magik was heavily involved, Irene had Freedom Force confront the New Mutants. The two teams fought but, in the chaos, Destiny gave a grave warning to Magik on how her actions have consequences. Whilst the New Mutant’s escaped, Destiny was confident that her warning had altered events enough to bring a favorable future. [New Mutants (1st series) #65]

[Note: The vision Destiny saw was of the upcoming Inferno event, in which the demons of Limbo were overrunning New York.]

Freedom Force continued to operate for the government and the team had run-ins with both X-Factor and the New Mutants again. Soon enough, Irene would receive a vision about death, only this time it would be of her own. Rather than manipulate events to save herself, she knew her death was important and a fixed point. Deciding not to tell Mystique, Irene let events play out the way they were destined. Freedom Force found themselves being dispatched to the Muir Island research center, which soon found itself under attack by the cyborg Reavers. Mystique was appalled at having to work alongside Forge, whom she still blamed for Rogue’s death. Irene began dropping thinly veiled hints that Forge and Mystique’s futures would become intimately linked in the near future, something that Mystique wasn’t even prepared to listen to.

Freedom Force landed on Muir Island and were immediately besieged by the Reavers. Destiny stayed in the main compound, with Forge acting as her guard, whilst Mystique and the others spread out over the island. Knowing her death was imminent, Irene had a choice to make as to how it would play out. Knowing it would be by the hands of the unstable Legion, she saw that whomever she was with when the young man found them would also be killed. Irene convinced Forge that Mystique was in danger, causing the man to leave her, unknowingly saving his own life in the process. Sure enough, once she was alone, Legion found her and killed her, but as a final act she had at least saved another man’s life. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) 254-255]

Destiny’s body was apparently cremated and her ashes scattered at sea by Mystique. [X-Factor (1st series) Annual #6] Her prediction of Mystique and Forge starting an intimate relationship would come true, as both worked on X-Factor together, though their relationship quickly ended. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #290]

[Note: Destiny’s body being cremated creates a problem with the future Necrosha story, as her body is exhumed and revived using the techno-organic virus.]
