Whilst Destiny remained dead, her influence was felt for many years to come, as the existence of her diaries was discovered and they were hunted down by hero and villain alike. Irene had seen the time in which her diaries would come to light and so, from beyond the grave, she guided Shadowcat into finding the first one. This would start a chain of events that would cause a splinter team of X-Men to hunt the rest down. [X-Men (2nd series) #94, X-Treme X-Men (1st series) #1]

Irene remained dead for many years and the mutant race went through numerous traumatic events, many of which were logged in her diaries. She was briefly brought back to life by the sorceress Selene, who was using a techno-organic virus to revive dead mutants. Her ultimate goal was to drain the life forces of enough mutants so she could ascend to godhood, and Destiny was one of the first mutants she resurrected. Dragged in front of Selene, the sorceress demanded the woman reveal what the future held, and Destiny obliged. She told Selene her plan would work and that she would get all the power she desired. Wanting to keep the old woman close at hand, Selene imprisoned Destiny so that she would be available if the time came.
Irene had other plans though, as she could see the threat Selene posed wasn’t the only one that needed to be dealt with. The reality warping Proteus had also died on Muir Island many years ago, much like Irene herself. When she was resurrected, she could feel that a part of Proteus had also come back and she knew it was only a matter of time before he reformed his body and wrought havoc once more. Irene used her abilities to reach out to Rogue, however her mind touched that of another precognitive mutant called Blindfold instead. With what little time and energy she had, Destiny informed Blindfold that the X-Men needed to send a team to Muir Island to stop Proteus. After she broke contact, her mind suddenly cleared up and she realized she had made a grave error. A part of Proteus had resided in her when she was brought back and, by contacting Blindfold, it had transferred to the young girl. Altering her plans, Destiny bargained with one of her guards for her freedom and she escaped Selene’s grasp and headed for Muir Island.
By the time she arrived, Blindfold and a team of X-Men led by Rogue had already landed. Destiny approached Blindfold and attempted to warn her about the threat Proteus posed, but it was too late. Proteus had gathered enough energy and he took control of Blindfold and Destiny and set out to wipe out the team of X-Men. Irene was helpless inside her own body as Proteus used her to attack the mutants, but it was Rogue and Magneto who ended up saving the group and defeating Proteus. It was a bittersweet moment as Irene could sense Selene’s imminent downfall, which would result in her own death once again. She took the opportunity to speak to her daughter Rogue and tell her the things she never got to before her death years before. As well as telling her how proud she was of what Rogue had achieved, she also left the young woman with a few cryptic clues to what the future holds for her. She also took the time to speak to Blindfold, and confirmed a distant family link between the two, enough to confirm why their minds touched when Destiny originally reached out. With that, Rogue and the X-Men left and Destiny once again was laid to rest. [Necrosha #1, X-Men Legacy (1st series) #231-233]
Only she wouldn’t get to rest for long, as the Chaos King made a play to take over the universe and he managed to put most of the heroes of Earth to sleep. When he attacked the underworld, it allowed the dead to rise once more and the Native American god Thunderbird took the chance to bring a number of dead X-Men back to fight. As well as John Proudstar, the Thunderbird’s namesake, it also brought back Moira MacTaggert, amongst others. Finding themselves on Muir Island, the group came across one of Destiny’s diaries that predicted this very event. As Moira read the diary, she visibly began to change into an old woman until it became obvious that her body was now housing Irene’s spirit.
The group was soon attacked by the Carrion Crow, one of the many minions of the Chaos King. They managed to escape it whilst Destiny explained that the group needed to become one with the primordial energies of the Earth itself if they had any hope of defeating their foe. Whilst the rest of the group fought the Carrion Crow, Destiny guided John as he tapped into the forces of the Thunderbird. Together they defeated the crow, taking out one of the Chaos King’s soldiers, allowing what remained of Earth’s heroes to fight back. The Chaos King was eventually defeated, and Destiny died again for the third time in her life. [Chaos War: X-Men #1-2]
In the years since her original death, Mystique had gone through a great many changes but her heart always lay with Irene. When Wolverine (the sometimes lover sometimes nemesis of Mystique) died, a group composed of those closest to him rallied together to tie up any loose ends in his life. Destiny had foreseen Wolverine’s death, as it was a fixed point in the timelines, and so she had left Mystique a series of letters and messages for this eventuality. She informed Raven that the death of Wolverine would mean that she herself could be brought back to life, and Mystique became fixated on bringing her lover back. She did unspeakable things to friend and foe alike in the belief that Irene would eventually come back to her. But it was all a lie. Destiny had been manipulating Mystique into bringing Wolverine back to life all along. Rage wasn’t even close to what Mystique felt being betrayed by Irene and she spitefully let Wolverine stay dead rather than go through with Irene’s plan. Mystique would eventually calm down as she knew that Irene had another plan for her resurrection, and this time it would be the real deal. The mutant race had been through a great many trials but they finally got their due when Xavier and Magneto created a nation on the island of Krakoa for all mutants. Destiny had foreseen this moment and set a plan in motion that would ensure she would live once more. Using five key mutants, Xavier had developed a way for any mutant to be resurrected with all the memories of their life. Using an embryo, a given mutant’s DNA, a backup of their psyche and some time-manipulating shenanigans any mutant’s body could be cloned and their psyche placed back in it. This was a great achievement and many fallen friends and foes alike were brought back… all but any mutant with precognitive abilities. This was because Moira MacTaggart was the secret third party in the formation of Krakoa and her mutant power put her at odds with Destiny. Moira had the power of resurrection. Every time she died, reality reset and she would be forced to live her life over again with all the memories of her previous ones.
In one lifetime, Destiny had confronted Moira about her creation of a mutant cure. She had threatened Moira that, unless she helped the mutant race in her subsequent lives, she would hunt her down every time and murder her. In her current life, Destiny was dead and Moira was adamant that this wasn’t going to change, so she enlisted Xavier and Magneto to ensure her resurrection would never happen. Mystique on the other hand made it her goal to get Destiny in the resurrection queue, but she didn’t know about Moira’s influence in the matters. After being lied to by Xavier one too many times, Mystique took matters into her own hands and secretly plotted to bring her lover back. After stealing some of Irene’s DNA and manipulating the five mutants who did all the resurrecting, Mystique’s plan worked. As Irene was an old lady when she died, Mystique had her resurrected in the body of a much younger version of herself.
As Irene woke up and her memories were implanted in her again, her powers activated and she was overcome with all that things that had been and could be. The trauma was overwhelming and it took a week for her to calm down. Over the weeks that followed, Mystique stayed by her side and Irene slowly adjusted to life again, with the two women eventually reconnecting with each other. After four weeks, Irene was back to her old ways and she was more than ready for Moira to meet her destiny. Mystique was a part of Krakoa’s inner circle called the Quiet Council, but the group had recently lost a member when Apocalypse left. The council held a meeting to vote on a new member and Destiny boldly walked into the meeting, intending on taking the seat. Xavier and Magneto were incensed that Destiny had been resurrected behind their back, and immediately cast a negative vote to her becoming a part of the council. Mystique had been scheming behind the scenes for a number of weeks, buying the votes of the other members who could be swayed, and so Destiny took her seat on the Quiet Council. [X-Men (5th series) #6, Inferno (2nd series) #1-2]
After the vote, Emma Frost summoned Destiny and Mystique to her quarters and informed them that Moira MacTaggart was alive. Emma herself had only found out recently, and she shared some of Moira’s memories with the two women. Irene, seeing herself amongst Moira’s memoires of previous lives, suddenly reeled at the information as her visions began to activate once more. To her, Moira was a void full of darkness and death, and she knew the woman was terrified of her. Emma was of the same opinion that Moira was too dangerous and so she orchestrated a plan with Irene and Mystique. Destiny and Mystique were handed the same neutralizer gun that depowered Storm years before, as well as a way of tracking Moira. Knowing what they needed to do, the two women captured Moira and chopped off her arm that contained a tracking device in it, throwing anyone who might look for her off her scent. Taking Moira back to her secret base on Krakoa, they depowered her with the gun, removing her ability to reset reality upon her death.
Destiny could see that the moment they were living through was an exceptional nexus event, with far-reaching consequences based on their next actions. Moira began to explain her actions and her desire to see the mutant race cured instead of extinguished. Destiny wasn’t interested in any of her excuses and prepared to kill Moira, until they were all interrupted by the arrival of Cypher. Destiny immediately saw how important his next actions would be to the entire timeline and so she allowed the event to play out. Cypher had been instrumental in turning Krakoa into a mutant haven but, in doing so, he had set up his own network, allowing him to listen to the secrets of everyone on the island. He had been aware of Moira’s existence from the start and had watched Destiny, Mystique and Emma plan her death. He informed the women he would not allow Moira to be killed and, when Mystique threatened him, he revealed his backup was Warlock, his new wife Bei and the island of Krakoa itself. In taking a stand, Cypher had cleared up the timelines and now Irene could see three possible futures for them.
In one, they killed Moira, were exiled from Krakoa and Irene would die soon after, never to be brought back. In the second timeline, Mystique tried to kill Cypher but is killed herself by Bei. Whilst Irene would remain on the council, it would be unlikely Mystique would ever be brought back. The third timeline had Moira being set free and leaving Krakoa, with Destiny and Mystique keeping their seats on the council too. Faced with only one acceptable option, Destiny reluctantly let Moira go and the woman fled Krakoa. Despite Moira still being alive, Destiny had at least prevented their reality from ending upon her death. Afterwards, they revealed Moira’s existence to the rest of the Quiet Council, at the annoyance of Xavier and Magneto. [Inferno (2nd series) #3-4]
