A divide continued to grow between Cyclops and Hope. Scott was still over-protective of Hope, seeing her as the keystone for the entire mutant race’s chances at repopulation. He was also now more sure than ever that the Phoenix Force itself would be manifesting through Hope, and was concerned with training her to somehow be ready when that happened. Meanwhile, Hope was antsy and ready for action. Even with the Extinction team and the Lights, she still felt like there was more she could be doing. Hope started sneaking away from Utopia at night to fight crime, just for something to do. She was furious that Scott had all these expectations for her, yet also refused to even discuss the Phoenix and its power around her. Being controlled and kept in the dark was not how Hope intended to act as a messiah. [Avengers vs. X-Men #0]

In a training session, Cyclops pushed Hope until she had another Phoenix manifestation. The firebird effect was appearing stronger and more often around Hope, and this time it was noticed. The Avengers were already tracking the Phoenix Force heading towards Earth after an encounter with the Nova Corps when they detected a second Phoenix signature from Utopia. After consulting with Wolverine, Captain America became convinced Hope was a clear and present danger to the planet, and that Cyclops would never see the matter rationally. Cap came to Utopia and made a token attempt to convince Scott that Hope needed to be put in Avengers custody, but Cyclops refused. He believed with all his heart that Hope and the Phoenix coming together were the only hope for his species. With that, Captain America decloaked a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and unloaded the full roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to enforce his will. The X-Men and the Avengers were at war.

Hope was rushed to safety inside Utopia as the battle broke out, but she refused to remain sequestered. The Phoenix Force rose within her as she disabled the other students who had been placed in charge of keeping her contained. Wolverine and Spider-Man infiltrated Utopia on behalf of the Avengers, and Logan was prepared to keep his promise to Hope and end her before she became a threat. Hope believed she was still in control, though, and she burned Logan with Phoenix fire rather than let him stop her. Leaving Wolverine to recover, Hope escaped Utopia on her own and walked on water to reach the mainland. She used what Nathan taught her to scatter her Cerebra mutant signature, leading the X-Men and Avengers on false trails as they tried to track her down.

Once everybody was running around looking for her, Hope approached Wolverine alone. She still believed she was in control and the Phoenix’s arrival was a good thing, but she understood the importance of hedging her bets. Hope asked Logan to willingly accompany her to meet the Phoenix, and do what was necessary only if it became necessary. Wolverine agreed, and Hope explained that her instincts told her to meet the Phoenix on the Blue Area of the Moon. On the way there, the pair were confronted by Shi’ar Death Commandos looking to assassinate the Phoenix host. Once again, the power flared up in Hope, and it looked as if she was going to lose control. Logan had the shot, but realized he could not bring himself to kill Hope. Instead, he called Captain America, and the Avengers met him and Hope once they made it to the Blue Area.

The X-Men followed in their wake, and another battle began between the two teams. As the Phoenix Force approached the moon, Hope Summers prepared to host its power. When the moment came, however, Hope lost her nerve and became afraid of what the power would do to her. She asked Logan to kill her before it was too late, but Cyclops prevented Wolverine from stabbing her. On the other hand, Tony Stark had intercepted the cosmic firebird with his Phoenixkiller Iron Man Armor. He attempted to disperse the Phoenix Force, but was unsuccessful. The Phoenix was diverted from Hope by his efforts, splintering into five smaller portions of infinity to be hosted by five other X-Men present. Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor became the Phoenix Five.

[Note: Privately, Unit admitted the reason for his counseling Hope about the Phoenix Force in Uncanny X-Men (2nd series) #13. Collecting data in furtherance of his own goals, Unit was aware of a previous messiah event where the Phoenix fought to undo a magic incantation halting evolution on an alien world a billion years ago. That messiah confronted the Phoenix with her five acolytes, communed with the entity and severed the incantation. Unit wanted to know what would happen if a messiah confronted the Phoenix alone, so he manipulated Hope into taking action without the Five Lights for his own edification.]

In the days that followed, the Phoenix Five seemed set to usher in an age of peace and bounty on Earth. Their raw power was turned towards improving the world, earning them the tacit approval of the United Nations. Utopia was raised into the sky as a shining new city of the future, and Hope Summers watched as her destiny seemingly passed her by. She held a position of prominence in Utopia’s society, and the Phoenix-Cyclops welcomed her to stay only as long as she liked. However, Scott also indicated he would not relinquish the Phoenix Force to Hope now even if she wanted it. The adults, he reasoned, would make far better use of the power than she ever would.
