Sometime after leaving Excalibur, Lockheed and Kitty became separated, each believing the other to be dead. On his own, Lockheed travelled around England, where he soon caused quite a stir in a small village. The locals, believing him to be a demon, chased after Lockheed and would have killed him had it not been for the intervention of two young witches. The girls seemed nice and, though they took him home and cared for him, Lockheed failed to notice how much everyone else feared them. When the girls’ nemesis, a fellow witch, confronted the two, they had the idea of setting their new pet on her. Lockheed launched a torrent of flames at her but, when she saw he didn’t want to hurt her, she reached out to him with kindness. The other girls were angry that Lockheed didn’t do as they asked and struck him with stones, causing him to singe them for their wickedness. This new girl informed Lockheed that the person he thought he had lost was actually alive and well. Bidding farewell to his new friend, Lockheed set off across the ocean to find Kitty. [X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #43]

At some point Lockheed became aware of a problem that was going on back on his home world. He aligned himself with SWORD, the Sentient World Observation and Response Department, who offered to look into the situation in return for his help. Lockheed agreed and was asked to secretly report on the goings-on within the X-Men and alert SWORD if anything happened that would require their attention. [Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #22]

Lockheed was eventually reunited with Kitty and he accompanied her back to the X-Mansion when she rejoined the X-Men. When the team came face to face with an alien named Ord, they had their work cut out trying to beat him. Surprisingly, it was Lockheed who defeated him by catching him off-guard and burning his face. Lockheed continued to work alongside Kitty on the “Astonishing” team and ended up fighting Ord once more, as well as the sentient Danger Room. [Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #1-12]

Lockheed also made himself useful around the school by participating in the students’ field day test. The various teams had to retrieve a mysterious prize from the middle of the hedge maze, and Lockheed was it. However, he wasn’t going to make it easy on them and he attacked anyone who came near. It was Icarus who managed to claim him by singing “Puff the Magic Dragon,” allowing the young boy to calmly escort Lockheed out of the maze to win the prize. [New X-Men: Academy X #4]

A blast from the past came back into Lockheed’s life when word reached him that the dragon he had befriended on Battleword years before had been kidnapped. He and Kitty travelled to Japan to sort the issue out, where they discovered that the dragon was being held hostage by a clan linked to Kitty’s former nemesis Ogun. During their investigation, Lockheed was kidnapped as well and held on the condition that Kitty led the clan herself. Naturally, Kitty rejected the offer and then managed to break Lockheed out of his cage. The two friends fought against the ninja clan, defeating them and freeing the other dragon in the process. Afterwards, Lockheed stayed with the dragon in Japan for a short time but he knew his place was with Kitty and returned to the US with her again. [Kitty Pryde: Shadow and Flame #1-5]

Lockheed continued to keep tabs on the X-Men for SWORD and proved quite useful as a situation was brewing that required the team’s presence. Ord, the alien that attacked the X-Men a few weeks before, hailed from a planet called Breakworld and it was prophesised that one of the X-Men would destroy it. SWORD decided to take the X-Men to the planet to sort the situation out and Lockheed accompanied them to the strange world. Things became chaotic once they landed on the planet and, during a heated planning session, Agent Brand, the leader of SWORD, revealed to everyone that Lockheed had been working for her the whole time. Kitty was surprised to hear this news and took it personally, as she had always trusted her friend. Lockheed knew what he did was wrong and he flew off in shame. Unfortunately, as events unfolded, Kitty became trapped in the weapon the Breakworlders had fired at Earth, which thanks to Kitty missed its target but continued on ever deeper into deep space. Not only had Lockheed seemingly lost his friend forever but he had done so before being able to make amends with her. [Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #19-24, Giant-Sized Astonishing X-Men #1]

Lockheed was inconsolable over the loss of Kitty and what made it worse was that they had parted ways without clearing the air. He spent more time on SWORD’s Peak space station and even started drinking heavily to numb his pain. He had hoped that SWORD’s technologies would allow for a way to retrieve Kitty from deep space, but Agent Brand told him that nothing they could do would bring Kitty back. The only bright side was that reports had come in of the bullet still phasing through asteroids, indicating Kitty was still alive. This offered little comfort to Lockheed, causing him briefly to contemplate striking up a partnership with the deadly robot Unit to get Kitty back, though he backed out at the last minute. Regardless of his disappointment with SWORD, Lockheed still stuck around and, when Agent Brand’s criminal brother was kidnapped off the Peak, Lockheed joined his boss and Beast to retrieve him. [S.W.O.R.D. #1-2]

SWORD was soon taken over by Henry Gyrich, who initiated a plan that would round up all the aliens on Earth and kick them off the planet. Lockheed was one of the many of Gyrich’s list and a team of agents were sent to apprehend him. Despite the agents taking as many precautions as possible, Lockheed still managed to beat them in a fight and escape into the air ducts before he was captured. Agent Brand went on the run due to being half-alien herself and so Lockheed monitored the situation on board the Peak from his hiding place. Things took a surprising turn when an alien race called the Drenx infiltrated the base and took Gyrich captive. They then set up a trap for Brand and lured her back to base. Fortunately, Lockheed was on hand to take out some of the aliens before the trap was sprung. With the Drenx beaten and Gyrich’s plan rescinded, things went back to normal on the Peak and Lockheed resumed his duties as a SWORD agent. [S.W.O.R.D. #3-5]

Lockheed continued to split his time between the X-Men and SWORD but he still couldn’t get over losing Kitty. When Lockjaw, the teleporting dog of the Inhumans, tracked him down, he found Lockheed in a depressed state. Lockjaw was hunting down the Infinity Gems and he was assembling his own team of animal heroes to help him do it. Lockheed was not interested in joining another team but he was swayed by an emotional appeal by Throg, the frog of Thunder.

Lockheed decided to tag along, not for the promise of saving the universe but for the memory of those he had lost. When the group travelled to the Savage Land and found the time gem, it was given to Lockheed to protect. When the team used Lockjaw’s teleportation power, the time gem caused the team to travel to the past. The team were confused at first but it was thanks to Lockheed, who recognised the landscape as being pre-historic, that they knew what happened.

When they encountered a young version of Devil Dinosaur, Lockheed was adamant that none of the team should hurt him for fear of repercussions to time and space. Things went south very quickly though and Redwing, another team member, tried to get Lockheed to teleport just them away using the time gem. Lockheed would not betray the rest of his team like he had done with Kitty and fought valiantly to gather the rest together before teleporting everyone to safety. The group found the rest of the gems but were confronted by Thanos, who wanted to use them to destroy creation. The team rallied together and took Thanos down. Afterwards, Lockheed decided to stay with the team as he saw what they could achieve together. [Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers #1-4]

The Pet Avengers soon came to the aid of the real Avengers when they were forced to face off against the alien dragon Fin Fang Foom and his brethren. The small team of animals was no match for the might of Foom and were quickly beaten, all except Lockheed. Foom recognized Lockheed as being a member of the Flock and let the tiny dragon live as he saw their similarities. He explained that the dragons had come to Earth to collect their eggs, which had been hidden away many years ago. Lockheed decided to help Foom out and, after a bit of a misunderstanding, even managed to convince the rest fo the Pet Avengers to help them too. The real Avengers did not understand what was going on though and attacked the Pet Avengers as they thought that the animals were helping Foom take over the world. Fortunately, the dragons managed to save their eggs and the Avengers saw that the pets were only trying to help an endangered species. Afterwards, though, Lockheed couldn’t help but feel down, as he had once again bid goodbye to a race of dragons and was on Earth alone. [Avengers vs Pet Avengers #1-4]

Kitty was eventually saved and returned to the X-Men, but Lockheed did not go and see her when he found out. Still ashamed of his betrayal, he stayed on the Peak, but when the X-Men were called upon by SWORD the two finally met. Kitty was equally as nervous at seeing her friend again and the reunion didn’t exactly start out well. Hiding his true feelings, Lockheed acted cold towards her, and things became more tense when Kitty started telling him off for the amount of whiskey he was drinking. They couldn’t keep up the charade any further, though, and they broke down and hugged each other, instantly mending their broken bond. The mission the X-Men were helping with involved the Brood, and both Kitty and Lockheed couldn’t help but lament that it was fighting the Brood that caused them to meet.

The X-Men soon found themselves fighting off the parasitic aliens and discovered that Agent Brand had been infected with one of them. The Brood were on the brink of extinction and X-Men had come to the conclusion that the universe needed their species to keep the other, more theatening species in check. Lockheed was horrified at the prospect of saving the Brood and parted ways with the X-Men, who were now finding a way to save some Brood younglings. The X-Men managed to find a young mutant Brood who exhibited compassion and so they saved him. In the process, though, the rest of the team was turned into Brood and Kitty was thrown out of an airlock and into space. Lockheed wasn’t going to let his friend down a second time and managed to save her. Despite his feelings on the matter, he reluctantly joined forces with the mutant Brood and Kitty, and together they saved the rest of their team. Afterwards, Lockheed decided to leave SWORD and return to the X-Men with Kitty. [Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #38, 40, 42]

When Wolverine set up a new school at Westchester, Lockheed joined him and the dragon's aggressive natures was put to good use. As well as running detention for unruly students, he also taught a class on identifying and killing alien creatures. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #1]

Soon after, Lockheed was faced by an invasion of the Brood yet again, only this time the aliens were microscopic in size and were inside Kitty. Along with the other X-Men, Lockheed was shrunk down and entered her bloodstream to fight the parasites from the inside. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #4-6]

Despite his small stature, Lockheed proved quite capable of handling the more boisterous students at the school. He was fitted with a translation device that aided in communicating with the others and was even made the headmaster when the other X-Men were on missions. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #32]

The next few months were a turbulent time for the X-Men but Lockheed remained by Kitty’s side throughout it. When she defected over to Cyclops’ school, Lockheed tagged along and even got to go into space again when the X-Men were called to help over the discovery of the Black Vortex. [All-New X-Men (1st series) #20, Black Vortex crossover]
