Shortly after Wolverine’s death, Spider-Man arrived at the Jean Grey School claiming to be honoring one of Logan’s final wishes by teaching an all-new Special Class. He was met with suspicion from the X-Men, especially Storm and Rachel Grey, and total disrespect from his new students which included Hellion, Rockslide, Shark-Girl, Eye-Boy, and Glob Herman. No-Girl, alongside Ernst, also found herself in Spider-Man’s class, and was one of the few students to take him seriously, even requesting a syllabus and grading standards. However, Spider-Man’s class was anything but typical and the group of students stumbled upon one villainous scheme after another. Ernst once again took on the role of No-Girl’s protector when the class was captured by Sauron and Stegron but No-Girl managed to hold her own when the class was stranded in Mojoverse, defeating many of Mojo’s mind slaves and freeing the rest of the group from mind control.
Despite the chaos that surrounded the Special Class, Spider-Man attempted to teach them that with their power came a responsibility to protect all people, not just mutants. He began to take his students with him on patrol but as the Special Class’s admiration for Spider-Man grew, Rachel Grey only became more skeptical of his true intentions. Her misgivings about Spider-Man were well-founded as he was keeping his true motive a secret. Wolverine had tasked him with finding a mole amongst the student body and his Special Class was his narrowed down suspects. At the school science fair, Rachel Grey used the opportunity of Spider-Man being distracted to break down his psychic defenses and enter his mind. She was shocked to find No-Girl in his head, ready to engage her in psychic combat on the astral plane to protect her teacher. Appearing in the glory of her former body, No-Girl not only managed to forcefully kick Rachel out of Spider-Man’s mind but even mind wiped her so that she forgot all she had found out, which included Spider-Man’s real identity.
Rachel was furious and despite No-Girl’s best intentions, Spider-Man immediately suspected her as the mole. Before he could fully question her, the Special Class spiraled into another adventure, taking off to save S.W.O.R.D. headquarters from a symbiote invasion led by Deathbird. Spider-Man decided to put his trust in Martha and asked her to go inside his mind so that he could bond with a symbiote without his mind being taken over. No-Girl barely managed to fight back the symbiote before it overwhelmed her and Spider-Man’s mind but having risked her life for him, she had regained his support. When they arrived back at the Jean Grey School, Spider-Man gave Martha a chance to explain her actions but there was no need because the true mole was revealed to be none other than Ernst who had been working with Mister Sinister!
In return for providing him with DNA samples of every student and teacher at the Jean Grey School, Mister Sinister promised Ernst that he would create a new body for Martha. He captured Spider-Man and No-Girl and brought them back to his base with the help of Ernst, where he fulfilled his end of the deal by placing Martha’s brain inside the body of a Storm clone. When the rest of the Special Class came to the rescue, Sinister forced Martha to relentlessly attack Ernst who had finally turned against him. Martha told her friend that although her heart was in the right place, Ernst had acted completely irresponsibly. Martha knew what Ernst had to do and Ernst regrettably complied and ripped Martha’s brain out of her new body. Spider-Man and his special class defeated Sinister and returned back to school where Martha and her classmates defended Ernst and managed to excuse her from serious punishment. Despite another botched opportunity at acquiring a new body, Martha seemed to be doing better than ever, practicing real-world heroics on a weekly basis with Spider-Man and even starting a romantic relationship with Eye-Boy. When the Terrigen Mist, the substance that grants Inhumans their powers, was released into the Earth’s atmosphere, it was discovered that it was toxic to mutants. The deadly illness that mutants contracted from it became known as M-Pox and to protect the X-Men and the rest of mutant kind, Storm relocated the institute to the demonic dimension of Limbo. Martha, along with Ernst, Anole, and Glob Herman, were a few of the students who stepped up to take care of the many mutant refugees and M-Pox victims that were brought to X-Haven but began to feel like the situation was hopeless. Noticing their drive as well as their despair, Colossus took the four students under his wing and began personally training them. [Extraordinary X-Men #6]
Another side-effect of M-Pox was the sterilization of mutants so it was a mysterious glimmer of hope when six hundred new mutant signatures manifested in Tokyo. With many of the X-Men engaged in rescue missions, Colossus brought Martha and his other trainees to Tokyo to investigate. Martha immediately realized the importance of the mission and upon arriving was quick to tell Anole and Glob to stop fooling around and focus. The group eventually discovered the source of the mutant signatures, the mutant geneticist known as Sugar Man, who had genetically engineered six hundred mutant embryos and placed them in a capsule which he referred to as his “ark.” Sugar Man planned to take the ark into the future, safe from the Terrigen Mists, and raise them as his personal army. A fight broke out and before the rest of the X-Men could arrive, Sugar Man’s time machine was activated and Martha, Colossus, Ernst, Anole, and Glob, along with the ark, were transported thousands of years into the future.
In this future, Apocalypse had finally enacted his philosophy of “survival of the fittest” and the surviving species were separated into different domains, collectively referred to as “Omega World.” Mutants were not one of the remaining species and according to Apocalypse, had lost their right to live in his new world and so, Martha and the group were immediately attacked by Apocalypse’s Horsemen. Colossus stayed behind to fight them off, advising his students to flee and protect the ark at all costs.
The four students made their way to the domain of mystics and were given directions by a goblin named Moogum. In exchange for helping them, Moogum wanted to eat Martha. The students escaped but Martha’s glass capsule was shattered. Martha's telepathic connection with the group begain to fade away as they travelled throughout Omega World for months without coming across anyone to help them. Anole and Glob began to lose hope that Martha was still alive but Ernst believed that her best friend could be saved and salvation came at last in the technological domain of the Stark-Self, an artificial intelligent species descended from Tony Stark’s inventions. Although they feared inviting Apocalypse’s wrath by helping the young mutants, they agreed to at least create a new body for Martha before sending the young mutants on their way.
Now housed inside a metallic, egg-shaped body with extendable arms and legs and laser-based weaponry, Martha was more motivated than ever and since she no longer grew tired or required sustenance, she often took the lead as the four teens spent the next year fighting their way through the other domains of Omega World. At some point, Colossus fell victim to Apocalypse’s brainwashing and became a Horsemen himself. Apocalypse had decided to give mutants a second chance in his world and kept a close eye on the group who were still protecting the ark. When the other X-Men arrived in the future and joined their missing students, all bets were off since Apocalypse felt that while mutants deserved a second chance, the X-Men did not. The Horsemen, now led by Colossus, caught up with the group and took the ark for their master.
The X-Men made their way to Apocalypse’s base and engaged in battle with the Horsemen and Martha found herself going toe-to-toe against Colossus. When Apocalypse revealed that he had already destroyed the Ark that the students had spent so long protecting, Nightcrawler attempted to kill him out of anger. Since Apocalypse was holding the Omega World together using his powers, the world began to crumble around them and Magik teleported the group, as well as Colossus and Apocalypse, back to the present. The X-Men were hoping to force Apocalypse to rid Colossus of his influence but instead Apocalypse teleported Colossus to Egypt to unite with his devoted followers, Clan Akkaba. [Extraordinary X-Men #8-12]
Apocalypse was placed in high-tech prison designed by Forge while Martha, Anole, and Glob went with Nightcrawler and Iceman to Egypt to retrieve Colossus. After a fierce battle against her former teacher, the group defeated Colossus and he was placed in the brig alongside his new master, who was eventually tricked into curing him. [Extraordinary X-Men #14-16]
Martha resumed her duties of taking care of the M-Pox refugees at X-Haven until tensions between the Inhumans and X-Men escalated into a war. In the aftermath, the Terrigen Mist cloud was destroyed and the Earth was safe for mutants again. As the X-Men and refugees began to leave X-Haven behind, Martha received a faint distress call coming from a barn in South Dakota. It turned out to be Cerebra, the X-Men’s sentinel ally, whose body was destroyed in the fight with the Inhumans. He transported his consciousness to an abandoned sentinel factory used by Emma Frost. After fighting their way through the sentinel guards, Martha and the X-Men found Cerebra, housed in nothing more than a discarded sentinel head. Martha, who apparently hadn’t felt herself since returning to the present, offered Cerebra the new body she acquired in the Omega World. Cerebra gladly accepted and Martha returned to her classic floating capsule. [Extraordinary X-Men #20]
With a new lease on life, the X-Men boldly relocated their operations to Central Park. Now a student at The Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach, Martha is always willing to help out and despite her limitations, is never shy when it comes to playing the hero!
