The girls soon came to the aid of Cyclops and Emma again when yet another threat to the mutant race arose. A short time before, Black Bolt of the Inhumans had unleashed the sacred Terrigen Crystals into Earth’s atmosphere and two deadly clouds were now sweeping the planet. Whilst the clouds triggered Terrigenesis for any latent Inhumans, it caused a killer disease in mutants. The Stepford Cuckoos travelled to Muir Island when a distress call was put out and they discovered one of the clouds had enveloped the area. They had arrived just in time to find a dying Jamie Madrox, who with his last breath explained the dangers of the Terrigen clouds to the team. After entering the mists himself, Cyclops became noticeably ill, but seemingly recovered soon after. However, when the Stepford Cuckoos linked minds with Emma Frost later on, they discovered that Cyclops had actually died soon after entering the cloud. Emma had been casting a psychic projection of Cyclops and making everyone believe he was still alive.

The Cuckoos thought best to let it go, as “Cyclops” had stirred up unrest between mutants and Inhumans and things were becoming heated. The team soon got word that one of the clouds was headed for Madrid and a plan was devised that would potentially destroy it. Irma was unsure of the plan, as it involved sending Alchemy, a boy who could transmutate chemicals, into the cloud itself. Her sisters ignored her concerns and let Alchemy enter the cloud, just as the Inhuman royal family arrived to stop them. The girls had trouble taking control of the powerful royal family, until Celeste suggested targeting the other Inhumans and using them instead. The plan worked, as Medusa and Black Bolt were too distracted with the Cuckoos to stop Alchemy. The cloud was rendered inert but Irma’s earlier concerns turned out to be warranted, as the boy succumbed to the deadly effects of the cloud. Naturally, the royals were furious and they took the fight to Emma and Cyclops. Manipulating the royals, Emma forced Black Bolt to kill “Cyclops” in front of everyone, thus giving him a more honorable death and turning him into a martyr. After he was buried, the Cuckoos confronted Emma about the whole scheme, but their former headmaster remained dedicated to the lie that Black Bolt killed Cyclops. [Death of X #1-4]

The Cuckoos decided to stay with Emma, as they knew that the tensions between mutants and Inhumans would only grow. Emma started thinking about the long game and began planning an intricate scheme to destroy the remaining cloud and any Inhumans who stood in her way. Many months passed and the time came to enact the plan, with the Cuckoos having a very critical role to play. Karnak, the Inhuman who was trained to see in the flaw in anything, was deemed a great threat and was locked away in a psychic world by the girls and Jean Grey. Karnak was taken to the World, the place where the girls were created, and they kept him in a mental loop for as long as they could. Fantomex was supposed to be watching over them but decided to go on a mission of his own in the World. Without her sisters knowing, Irma kept in contact with Fantomex and even allowed him to patch in to Karnak’s unique abilities to accomplish his mission. When Fantomex shut her out, Irma was forced to come clean to Jean and her sisters, who were none too pleased that she had deceived them and endangered the mission. Karnak eventually escaped and the Cuckoos decided to join Emma and the other X-Men as they took on the Inhumans. Once again, the girls used the tactic of possessing the younger Inhumans and turning them against the royal family. During the fight, everyone discovered how much Emma had been manipulating them, even to the extent of Cyclops’ real death. The Cuckoos could no longer stand next to her and joined forces with the other X-Men when Emma tried to kill the Inhumans. [IVX #1-6, Uncanny X-Men (4th series) #16]

With the threat of the Terrigen mists gone, the X-Men returned to New York and re-opened the school in the middle of Central Park. Even though they had been loyal to Emma Frost for such a long time, the Cuckoos were welcomed into the new school as students once more. [Generation X (2nd series) #1]
