As his consciousness was dispersed amongst all of humanity, Nate managed to maintain awareness psychically and years later, he began attempting to restore himself, resulting in humans falling into trances and calling themselves, “X-Men.” The first to catch notice of this phenomenon was Norman Osborn, Director of H.A.M.M.E.R. and he sent his own team of X-Men to investigate. Consisting of Mystique, Dark Beast, Mimic, and Omega, Norman’s X-Men were an unstable group and chaos erupted when Nate overloaded Omega and Mimic with his vast powers, tried to attack Dark Beast, and struggled to communicate with Mystique, who was posing as his mother, Jean Grey. Nate ultimately couldn’t maintain his form and vanished.

Back at H.A.M.M.E.R. Headquarters, Osborn recognized the threat that Nate could propose to his organization but couldn’t resist the urge to hook him up to his mutant power-draining Omega Machine. Tasked with finding Nate, Osborn’s X-Men used H.A.M.M.E.R.’s Psi-Division to scan the entire human unconscious and locate him. However, the group of amateur psychics were no match for Nate’s raw psychic power and Nate drained the power of the entire Psi-Division and used it to build himself a new form. He also had the opportunity to scan their minds and was horrified to learn that Norman Osborn was in charge of the Avengers and had just sent mutantkind into exile.

Nate immediately attacked Norman but the strength of Osborn’s Avengers, namely Ares, as well as Osborn’s X-Men distracting Nate for their own personal agendas seemed to prove too much for him. He pretended to perish in battle while he invaded and possessed Osborn’s mind. In control of Osborn, Nate set about to making things right but he wasn’t counting on Osborn’s will power to be strong enough to push him out. To make matters even more difficult, Mystique had caught on to what Nate was doing and although Nate gave her a chance to walk away, Mystique struggled with the decision of who would benefit her more in power: Nate or Norman.

While Nate wrestled with Norman for control, Mystique and the others feared that Nate wouldn’t look past their mistakes and ventured on a psychic rescue mission into Norman’s mind. Their plan to free Norman took a disastrous turn when they accidentally set free Norman’s Green Goblin persona. Green Goblin and Norman worked together to drain Nate of his power and he was forcefully kicked out of Norman’s mind. Back in the real world, Nate was tortured but before being sent to the Omega Machine, he scolded Mystique, Mimic, and Omega, saying that if they had approached him in friendship, he would have gladly helped them with their problems, such as removing the bombs that Norman placed in Mystique’s nervous system and healing Mimic’s crippling depression. While Norman Osborn eventually fell from power and H.A.M.M.E.R. collapsed, Nate was not rescued immediately. Sugar Man, who was also a captive of H.A.M.M.E.R. at the time, broke out of his cell and set up shop in an abandoned H.A.M.M.E.R. warehouse. Keeping Nate hooked up to the Omega Machine, he reconfigured the machine to use Nate’s power to open up portals to alternate realities in hopes of finding a way back to his home dimension. Having learned that Nate returned, Cyclops tasked Dani Moonstar’s squad of X-Men to find him. Dani’s team succeeded, putting an end to Sugar Man’s operation and finally freeing Nate from the Omega Machine. Unfortunately, being hooked up to the power draining machine for so long had a price and Nate’s mutant powers were burnt out, leaving him with only his telekinesis. He was taken to Utopia, where he accepted Cyclops’ invitation to stay and make it his new home. [New Mutants (3rd series) #25-27]

Spending most of his time in Utopia’s danger room, Nate tested his new limits and quickly realized just how diminished his telekinesis was. Seeing Nate as a younger version of her father, Cable, Hope Summers took a keen interest in Nate and watched as his frustration grew. She stepped in and offered to teach Nate what Cable taught her: how to get by without powers. Nate gladly accepted and the two began to train regularly together. [New Mutants (3rd series) #28] Perhaps feeling indebted to them for their rescue, Nate joined Moonstar’s team without being asked. Although feeling insecure with his lessened powers, he began to use his telekinesis more effectively after taking Sunspot’s advice to visualize a symbol and proved his value when the team joined Dani in Hel to fight against the ancient Draumar. [New Mutants (3rd series) #29-32]

After an explosive argument over the way the younger generation of mutants were being treated, Wolverine decided to part ways from Cyclops and reopen the school in Westchester. Agreeing with the idea that the X-Men shouldn’t be concerned with shielding kids from the harsh realities of life and wanting to get to know Cyclops better, Nate wanted to stay at his side. At the same time, Nate was used to being independent and decided to join Dani’s team when they moved into a house in San Francisco where they would continue to report to Cyclops but attempt to live normal lives as well. [New Mutants (3rd series) #33]

After suffering a series of nightmares, Doug Ramsey convinced the team to visit Paradise Island, the place where he once died. Tensions flared when Nate began to question Doug's mental stability which led to Dani insulting Nate's low-level telekinesis. While Nate admitted that he could still only pick up with telekinesis what he could lift physically, he later demonstrated his new method of telekinetic attack when the team came under attack from the island’s Ani-Mates. By focusing his telekinesis into the shape of an X, Nate was able to target his power more precisely. The trip proved to be worthwhile when they discovered a plot by the Ani-Mator to return to life in virus form. Infected by the virus and fused together, a feverish Nate and Dani began to acknowledge their attraction to each other. [New Mutants (3rd series) #38-40]

The Ani-Mator was defeated but the horrific mission took a toll on the team. Noticing the somber mood, X-Men ally Blink took the team for a night out in Madripoor. While the rest of the team partied, Nate drifted off by himself, unsure how to act in such a jovial atmosphere. Dani reached out to comfort him and the two finally expressed their feelings for each other with an intimate kiss. [New Mutants (3rd series) #41]

Nate’s mutant abilities began to steadily improve. He mastered his X-shaped telekinetic technique and even managed to use his telepathy in small doses. His knowledge and familiarity of alternate universes became handy when the New Mutants found themselves in one created by a future megalomaniac version of Doug Ramsey. [New Mutants (3rd series) #44-49] When the X-Men and Avengers went to war over how to handle the Phoenix Force, Nate fought bravely on the front lines; first to protect Hope Summers and then to defend Cyclops’ utopian rule. When Cyclops became corrupt due to the Phoenix Force, his leadership came to a disastrous end and Dani’s team went their separate ways. [Avengers Vs. X-Men, New Mutants (3rd series) #50] When Moonstar joined the superhero team, the Defenders, Nate remained close to her and the pair finally confirmed their relationship status when they awkwardly ran into Dani’s former flame, Cannonball.
