In Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #211, Shadowcat was injured by Harpoon's slayspear and her molecules began drifting uncontrollably apart. In X-Men vs. Fantastic Four #1-4, Reed Richards and Doctor Doom saved her from dissipating. However, Kitty's natural state was now phased, with her only becoming solid through concentration. In Astonishing X-Men Giant-Size #1, Kitty phased a moon-sized bullet of alien metal to save Earth, but became merged and trapped inside the bullet for months. She was recovered in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #522, however, she was again trapped in a permanent phased state. In Uncanny X-Men #538, a Breakworld resurrection ritual killed Kitty and then restored her with control of her powers.
