BIOGRAPHY
Life was pretty much perfect for Albert Louis. He had a good job, enough money, good friends, and a romantic interest. But his perfect life in Halifax, Nova Scotia was shattered when he was attacked one evening by a group of armored enforcers called the Hardliners. The Hardliners were employed by Senator Robert Hagon, whose proposed Super Powers Bill would force all paranormals in Canada to register themselves. Hagon had identified Albert as a mutant and sent the Hardliners to make an example of him, even though the Super Powers Bill had not yet been passed. Albert was forced to reveal his mutant power in public to protect his friends and defend himself from the Hardliners. He unleashed several energy “shock troopers” against his attackers, enabling him to escape. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #118]
Albert made his way across Canada on the run from the Hardliners, narrowly evading them at every turn. He eventually arrived in Toronto, where he hoped to find a safe haven with Alpha Flight. Momentarily distracted by news of the team, Albert was discovered by the Hardliners and the chase was on once again. Thankfully for Albert, he managed to find Alpha Flight on the streets of Toronto and begged for their help. The Hardliners arrived, demanding that the Alphans turn Albert over to them. Guardian pointed out that the Super Powers Bill had not been passed yet and refused to give Albert over to the Hardliners without consulting with her superiors in the Canadian government. The Hardliners attacked and a battle was fought over Albert. Alpha Flight emerged victorious and Albert accompanied them back to Department H. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #119-120]
The Hardliners soon landed in court for preempting the government’s Super Powers Bill. Albert joined Dept. H’s trainee program and adopted the codename Feedback. With Hagon’s Super Powers Bill looming, Albert participated in a press conference and urged all unregistered paranormals, even those like him whose only wish was to be left alone, to come forward and voluntarily register with Alpha Flight. He hoped to pay back the Hardliners for tearing his life apart by ensuring that their stunt worked in Alpha Flight’s favor by bringing new superhumans into their ranks.
Albert dealt with his frustration by pouring himself into his training. Feedback progressed quickly during combat training, quickly mastering new applications of his powers. Though he displayed good knowledge of his power and how to use it to his advantage, he still failed in some exercises. This only added to his anger at being thrust into this new life. After one such session, Feedback wanted to try the exercise again straight away, but Manikin, who was overseeing his training, explained to him that he had exhausted his power and he needed to be patient as they assessed both the source and limitations of his powers. This annoyed Feedback who was impatient. Albert was struck a further blow when he learned that the Hardliners would not go to jail because a mysterious benefactor had offered to pay for the damages caused by their actions. To make matters even worse, the Super Powers Bill was passed by Parliament. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #126]
Feedback was then captured by the Hardliners who sought revenge on Alpha Flight. Albert was held prisoner, unable to use his power, and in danger of being maimed while Alpha Flight attempted to rescue him. Fortunately, he was successfully rescued by Puck and reunited with his new friends, who had taken down the Hardliners. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #128-129]
The Master of the World and his flunkies were defeated but trouble awaited Albert and Alpha Flight when they returned to Department H. Their government liaison General Clarke announced that Alpha Flight was being suspended and would no longer have official status until the Super Powers Bill issue was fully resolved. The members of Alpha Flight were offered advisory roles in Department H and some accepted this offer. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #130]
Albert was among those who remained at Department H, not because he had only recently been rescued by Alpha Flight, but apparently because he had signed a contract with the Department. Despite suspending Alpha Flight, the Department was still in full operation and going through a transitional period into a secretive organization. Albert made it clear that he wanted to leave, so Department H sold his contract to a corporation in Santo Marco that wanted to use his powers to provide energy to power a factory. While this would produce desired clean energy, it also meant that he would effectively become an indentured servant. Not wanting to spend the rest of his life as a slave, Albert had apparently become quite knowledgeable about the shady goings-on at Department H and, after the Department successfully cloned James MacDonald Hudson, Albert used the equipment to clone himself. The resulting copy believed himself to be the real Albert Louis and had no idea what fate awaited him. With his cover complete, the real Albert escaped.
Albert managed to leave Canada, relocating to California. There he changed his name to Lucas Peterson and, leaving his brief time with Alpha Flight and Department H behind him, he eventually found work at Somis BioTech. He later met Eleanor and they married and had a daughter, Sophia. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #3]
Department H eventually restarted Alpha Flight, but Feedback simply became another long-forgotten member. No one thought to look him up and, apparently, none of Alpha Flight were aware that he had been “sold” to the corporation in Santo Marco. Albert maintained his “non-existent” profile and, when the mutant nation of Krakoa was formed, he was not part of it. What he didn't count on, however, was that a team of mutants on Krakoa called the Marauders (including a former member of Alpha Flight) took part in mutant outreach and rescue missions. When a dodgy factory in Santo Marco blew up after the clone somehow exploded, setting the factory on fire, the Marauders were on hand to aid in the relief efforts. The body of whom they thought was Feedback was discovered, and the Marauders arranged for him to be put in the queue for Krakoan resurrection. [Marauders (2nd series) #11]
With anti-mutant hysteria on the rise, Department H refocused its efforts on the ground-based Alpha Flight team after aligning with Orchis, and the Canadian government passed legislation to ban all mutants from the great nation of Canada. This should have been no concern to Albert (or rather, Lucas) until one day at Somus BioTech's facility in Camarillo, California, when several Orchis agents arrived. Lucas was approached by his boss, who reminded him that Somis BioTech manufactured equipment for Orchis, and that part of the contract meant that Somus BioTech would not employ mutants. Lucas feigned ignorance but, when the Orchis agents opened fire at him, he was forced to defend himself and used his powers to deflect the weapons fire before escaping. On the run, Albert purchased a disposable mobile phone to contact his wife and let her know that he was safe. He revealed his true identity to her, unaware that Orchis agents were with his wife and daughter. Albert vowed to keep his family safe but, even though he destroyed the phone, Orchis were able to get a track on his location. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #1]
As if things couldn't get worse for Albert, Orchis publicly branded him as a mutant menace who assaulted workmates and caused millions of dollars of damage. He was seeking respite in a diner when he was recognized by the manager, who tried to get him to hand himself over to the police, who had surrounded the diner. Albert ordered everyone out of the diner and refused to leave. Word of Feedback's plight had reached the official Alpha Flight team who were en route. Unfortunately for Albert, Department H's brutal new director, Erika Dorion, refused to allow them to intervene, and sent a number of Department H's new Box Sentinels to apprehend him. Albert lashed out at the Box Sentinels, maintaining that he had done nothing wrong and that he merely wanted to be left alone. The Box Sentinels began to surround Albert – just as a group of renegade Alphans arrived to turn the tides.
Albert joined the renegade Alpha Flight team in battle against the Box Sentinels, destroying a number of them in the process. Albert was teleported to safety by the mysterious new Nemesis, although she was seriously injured by a Box Sentinel as she escaped, leaving the renegade Alphans in the middle of a dense forest with Albert. It was there that Albert was confronted by Fang, who had believed Albert to be killed in Santo Marco. When Albert revealed his story, the Alphans were horrified with Albert’s action, specifically leaving the clone to die like that. It certainly lacked the heroism they expected of their teammates. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #2-3]
Department H's Alpha Flight soon arrived at the forest, although there were secretly working with the renegade Alphans to rescue mutants from Department H and Orchis. With Nemesis injured and Box Sentinels closing in under the orders of the increasingly frustrated Director Dorion, it was Albert who stepped up and devised a plan. This plan would enable the renegade Alphans to escape with Nemesis, while the Department's Alpha Flight would claim they had captured Albert and hand him over to Department H. The plan worked at first but the Box Sentinels soon located the secret Krakoa North, the safe-haven where several rescued mutants had been residing until they could be taken to Chandilar. Alpha Flight were forced to reveal their secret assistance to Krakoa North to help the mutants. Feedback accompanied them and once again battled the Box Sentinels. In the end, Nemesis mustered her remaining strength to teleport Feedback and the rescued mutants to the Alpha Flight Space Station, where a shuttle was waiting to take them to Chandilar. Albert was last seen boarding the shuttle with several of the young, rescued mutants from Krakoa North headed for the Shi'ar Empire. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #4-5]
Safe on Chandilar for now, the future for Albert and the other rescued mutants, as well as that of his wife and daughter (and of all superhumans in Canada) is now uncertain.
