BIOGRAPHY - PAGE 5
When Julian eventually woke from the sedation, he found the landscape for mutantkind very different. The Institute had been abandoned and the X-Men and, in fact, much of mutantkind, had relocated to San Francisco. Devastated to learn that the New X-Men had been disbanded, Julian was further shocked when Emma Frost seemed to suggest that Julian simply remain at the hotel she had placed him in to concentrate on further recovering. Julian was more concerned with the whereabouts of Laura, Mercury and even Dust, certain that they would want to see him. He ditched the hotel and journeyed to his parents’ home – only to find it abandoned and up for sale. When even his uncaring parents didn't want him, Julian reached out to Emma Frost, but she did not answer him. Julian eventually sought out Magneto, who had also relocated to San Francisco, and, seeing himself as one of the most powerful mutants alive, Julian offered his loyalty to Magneto.
Magneto, however, wasn't interested and told Julian that he would not use him to hurt the X-Men, suggesting instead that he enjoy this time that he has been granted. If one thing was certain where mutants were concerned, he told him, it was that another war was coming. [X-Men: Divided We Stand #1] Despite his initial anger, Julian soon returned to the X-Men and was seen celebrating Christmas in San Francisco with them, and then at their headquarters, Graymalkin Industries, where he had reconnected with Mercury and Dust. Julian was soon abducted by the Sapien League, whose mad leader, the Leper Queen, sought vengeance on mutantkind. The Leper Queen saw Julian and the two other mutants she abducted, Surge and Boom-Boom, as three of the most powerful mutants remaining. With a modified version of the Legacy virus, she planned to use them to infect humans and have mutantkind take the blame. Julian and Surge were both infected with the virus and taken to the United Nations, where heated debate about a new Sentinel Program was underway. The Sapien League planned to position Julian and Surge amongst the United Nations, exposing hundreds of people to the virus. As they arrived, Julian made a brave move against the Sapien League and used his powers to free himself and keep any trace of the virus trapped behind a telekinetic field. Unfortunately, Surge was not so lucky, often unable to control her powers, she was at risk of releasing the deadly virus. The X-Men’s black-ops squad called X-Force arrived to rescue the young mutants, however, and, after Elixir cured Julian of the virus, Julian was able to use his telekinesis to shunt the virus spoors that Surge was releasing into space, once again proving himself a quick thinker and skilled in the use of his powers. When he learned that Laura had been kidnapped by the Facility, he wanted to join the rescue attempt, but Cyclops forbade him from doing so. [X-Force (3rd series) #13, 17-19]
That war Magneto spoke of didn't take long to arrive and Julian made his position very clear. He joined several other young mutants on the streets of San Francisco to protest against Proposition X, a ballot initiative which would dictate how and when mutants could reproduce. The initiative had been publicly advocated by Simon Trask and his Humanity Now! Coalition as a response to the mutant baby born post M-Day and the destruction caused in Alaska when various mutant factions sought to obtain the baby for themselves. Violence erupted between several mutants and the anti-mutant protesters, during which Julian landed several blows on Simon Trask. Julian sustained some superficial injuries himself. Following the initial protests, more riots and protests followed, and Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers, along with H.A.M.M.E.R. agents, were called in to keep the peace. A curfew was also imposed in Marin, where the X-Men and their students were residing. Julian rallied several other disaffected mutants and caused chaos at Union Square. Footage quickly went live and Emma led Norman Osborn's own “X-Men” team into Union Square to stop the violence. Hellion was punched by his former mentor on live television and placed under arrest. Julian and the other rioters were taken to Alcatraz, which was under the control of H.A.M.M.E.R. and where Osborn's “Avengers” team were unkind to the captive mutants. One of them even kicked Julian, prompting Emma to speak up in defense of the captive mutants. Julian was imprisoned for the remainder of this crisis, which ultimately resulted in Asteroid M being raised to the surface, and the establishment of Utopia, an island home for the X-Men and any mutants seeking haven. [Utopia crossover]
Julian was one of many mutants who settled on the new island sanctuary and reconnected with the large number of former teammates and classmates who had also relocated to the island. [X-Men Legacy Annual #1] Despite Utopia being a safe-haven for mutantkind, it was not always such, with many threats still rising to cause problems for the X-Men and others on the island. Never one to sit out of the fight, Julian participated in defending Utopia from Selene's army of dead mutants and found himself battling the long-dead New Mutant, Rusty Collins. [Necrosha crossover] The next danger for mutantkind arose when a number of anti-mutant organizations were unified by Bastion in an effort to destroy the mutant messiah, Hope, and eradicate mutantkind once and for all. During this time of grave danger, Julian joined several other powerful mutants on San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to provide resistance against the deadly Nimrod Sentinels, which posed a threat not only to Utopia but the wider San Francisco region. Despite working well alongside Psylocke and Wolverine, tragically Julian's hands and lower arms were dissolved by the Nimrod technology and he was taken out of the battle, being returned to Utopia's infirmary where his wounds were treated. He also began to annoy other patients in the infirmary with his attitude and tried comparing wounds with Karma, who had lost a leg during another battle. [Second Coming crossover, New Mutants (3rd series) #15]
While still confined to the infirmary on Utopia, Julian withdrew into himself, becoming sullen and uncooperative. Rogue had recently taken on the responsibility of mentorship to the X-Men students on Utopia and, when she invited Julian to join her on a trip to India with Magneto and several other students, Julian declined, not wanting to be gawked at be humans who would look at him differently for his disability. [X-Men Legacy (1st series) #238]
Despite his anger and attitude, Julian attended a party with the majority of the other young mutants on the island. He was not happy when one of the Stepford Cuckoos offered to feed him, as if he were a baby. The next morning, Julian was with Surge, Dust and some of the others when Laura approached them. Julian had not seen a lot of Laura lately, given her involvement with the X-Force black ops squad – something Surge made plainly clear that she didn't like. Surge felt that Laura should have been able to tell her friends what she was doing. After Surge was caught bullying Laura, Cyclops broke the situation up. Seeing Laura again, though, confirmed to Julian that their feelings for each other were still unresolved.
When Julian learned that Laura was injured in an explosion, he went to visit her in the Infirmary, only to witness her shoving her claws into Wolverine. Laura began to explain that it was not Wolverine but a demon, possessing Wolverine, only for the demon to lash out at Julian and shove his claws through Julian's chest – the second time that had happened to Julian in recent times. Julian lay dying and so Laura struck a deal with the demon possessing Wolverine and accompanied him to Hell, in exchange for the demon reviving Julian. When Julian eventually woke, Laura had returned from Hell, having defeated the demon, and it was as if Julian was never stabbed. Having no physical wounds, he also had no memory of the attack by the demon. By now Julian was no longer confined to the infirmary and was in his own quarters. It was nighttime when Laura decided to leave Utopia. She went to say goodbye to Julian but, upon seeing that he was asleep, she simply left without any words. However, Julian was actually still awake and only pretended to be asleep, possibly to avoid any awkward farewell. [X-23 (2nd series) #1-3] After withdrawing from his friends, Julian was provided with cybernetic hands that were connected to his arms, by Dr. Kavita Rao. However, Julian did not like these robot-like hands and lashed out at Dr. Rao, destroying part of her lab in the process.
With San Francisco still recovering from damage sustained in the recent Sentinel attacks, Rogue insisted that Julian join her on a group working to help with the clean-up. Assigned to help clear some partly-demolished buildings, Julian hung back from doing any work, until he confronted the mutant messiah, Hope, angry that for all her power she was unable to restore his hands. Julian started to vent his frustration on the building site, demolishing rubble with abandon, even scattering some of it on Hope. One of the clean-up crew was the former X-Man known as the Omega Sentinel and, when her programming went haywire, she attacked Hope. Instinctively, Julian was able to deflect the blast, protecting Hope and a human girl who had befriended Hope at the building site. Julian then repeatedly and violently lashed out at the Omega Sentinel, taking out his anger and vengeance on her for the fact that machines took his hands away.
Julian did so much damage to the Omega Sentinel that she was left effectively braindead, and placed into stasis in a lab on Utopia. When Cyclops angrily told Julian that he should have handled the situation another way, Julian showed no remorse for his actions, so Cyclops placed him on probation. He further warned him to shape up his attitude, otherwise he would be removed from Utopia. When Cyclops told him that many mutants had looked down the dark path but never treaded it, Julian's only reaction was to tell Cyclops that most mutants didn't have the stones to do so. Julian was further reprimanded by Rogue, who was angry about what Julian did to her former teammate. She warned him that, if he messed up once more, she would remove his powers. Later, after walking past some of his former teammates and being ignored by them, Julian decided he could get by without both powers and friends. [X-Men Legacy (1st series) #242-243]
