When the reality warp known as the Age of X affected Utopia, Julian was also caught up in the changes that transpired. In this reality, Julian worked alongside other powerful psychics like Psylocke, Legion and Unuscione as a member of the elite group called the Force Warriors. This group had the immense responsibility to repair the force field that surrounded Fortress X, the home and last bastion of mutantkind, where each day it was a struggle for the world's remaining mutants to survive against the humans who would attack it. When tensions mounted within Fortress X, including suspicions about Fortress X itself and the actions of mutant kind's leader, Magneto, even the loyal Force Warriors called into question what was going on around them. Following the deaths of two mutants, the Force Warriors relieved Magneto of his command and placed Fortress X under their jurisdiction. When it was discovered that Legion was responsible for the reality warp, Fortress X gave way and Utopia returned. [Age of X crossover]

When the dust settled, it was discovered that Julian had retained the artificial floating hands that he controlled telekinetically during the reality warp. In addition, he regained control over more delicate use of his telekinesis that he had been lacking since Emma Frost first opened his mind up to enable him to access more power. [X-Men Legacy (1st series) #248] Additionally, Julian's attitude and behavior seemed to improve, even going as far as to protect Emma Frost, despite feeling she abandoned him, from the long-forgotten Evolutionaries when they attacked Utopia. When Cyclops and Wolverine began to disagree with the direction of mutantkind, this led to a Schism on Utopia, with all of the residents having to either decide to stay on Utopia with Cyclops and continue to train for possible combat, or join Wolverine in returning to Westchester, where Wolverine planned to re-open the Xavier Institute as the Jean Grey School, determined to give future generations of mutants more options than simply fighting endless wars. This decision was particularly important for Julian and his generation of mutants. Reintegrating himself with his former classmates, Julian was very clear in his decision to return to Westchester, no doubt in part to losing his hands in one of the X-Men's conflicts. Despite this, Julian was reminded of how many students died back in Westchester. His longtime teammates Mercury, Dust and Rockslide sided with him, while his rival Surge took the opposite view and elected to remain on Utopia. [X-Men: Regenesis #1]

As Julian was packing his belongings to leave Utopia, he was visited by Rogue. Julian wasn't much interested in speaking with her, not after the last conversation they had in which she threatened to take away his powers. However, Rogue needed Julian's help with one last matter and, when Julian asked Rogue why he would do that, considering what happened last time, Rogue told him that she knew what he did to Omega Sentinel still made himself sick. Julian agreed to help Rogue and rescue the mutant Ariel, who was stranded between realms after teleporting away when she was struck by a missile. Julian proved instrumental in this mission by telekinetically stabilizing the heat and flames around Ariel, so that she was protected from the effects of the missile blast. With Rogue's guidance, Julian carried out his part of the plan. [X-Men Legacy (1st series) #260]

Upon settling into the Jean Grey School, Julian seemed comfortable once again with his old classmates and friends from the Xavier Institute. [Wolverine & the X-Men (1st series) #1]

In truth, Julian was struggling both with Laura's departure and the fact that he continued to be viewed as an unstable threat. Sometimes he also used the cybernetic hands that Kavita Rao had previously offered him. Confining himself to his room, he was visited by Wolverine, who asked him if he really wanted to be in Westchester. Their discussion was interrupted by the arrival of Laura, who was visiting the Jean Grey School. Julian was pleased to see Laura, although Laura seemed distressed by the state of Julian's room and how he was living. Julian reminded Laura that she didn't say goodbye to him and revealed to her what he did to Omega Sentinel. However, when Julian asked Laura if Wolverine told her to talk to him, she told him he didn't and started to walk away. Julian grabbed Laura in a telekinetic hold, wanting to know if she was back for good, but they were interrupted by Gambit, who warned Julian to let Laura go and not to follow her. When Julian told Gambit to mind his own business, the Cajun warned Julian to mind himself, or else his legs would join his hands. To this, Julian threatened to kill Gambit.

Seeking Laura out, Julian found her babysitting Franklin and Valeria Richards on the back of a dragon. Thinking Laura and the kids were in danger, Julian leapt into action and attacked the dragon. Bizarrely, they were all transported to a junkyard planet. As they gathered themselves, Julian confronted Laura about her leaving him on Utopia without saying goodbye, and about what she was doing with Gambit. Laura assured Julian that Gambit's intentions were strictly that of mentorship. When Julian admitted that he could not stop thinking about Laura, Laura revealed that she needed to find her own path, which is why she left Utopia… and Julian. Nevertheless, Julian and Laura worked together to rescue the captive Franklin and Valeria from the cosmic being called the Collector, during which Julian used his telekinesis to fly into open space and rescue Laura and the children. When the Collector was defeated and the Richards children returned to the Baxter Building, Julian was thanked by Laura for his assistance in the mission. Julian kissed Laura, believing that they were finally getting together. Julian was shocked when Laura told him that things were different – that she was staying in Westchester, but not with him – because she didn't want to be with him. With Laura at the Jean Grey School, Julian started to keep a watchful distance from her. [X-23 (2nd series) #17-20]
