About a month later, the Exiles were sent to a world overrun by creatures called the Vi-Locks, the result of the Legacy Virus merging with Warlock’s transmode virus. The Exiles worked with this world’s Avengers to stop this threat. During the conflict, Blink was infected by with the Vi-Locks and nearly died as a result. Mimic finally realized the depths of his love for her and how badly he had treated her. Though he wasn’t sure she could hear him, he apologized and told her just how much she meant to him.

Fortunately, Blink’s infection was recent enough that she could be cured with a specially developed serum. This reality was saved when the Asgardians were called in. During the victory celebration, the Timebroker showed up to reveal that one of the team had fixed their personal chain of events and was ready to go home. Before he could even tell them who it was, the Tallus had shifted from Blink’s arm to Mimic’s. Clarice disappeared, returned to her native reality before Calvin had a chance to say goodbye. [Exiles (1st series) #20-22]

As new team leader, Calvin tried to focus on the Exiles’ missions and getting the job done. His teammates Sasquatch and Sunfire reminded him to not blindly follow the Tallus’ every command, as some of the missions conflicted with the heroes’ personal values and ethics. It was around this time that Mimic began to suspect that the Timebroker wasn’t everything he claimed to be. In particular, the idea that he stemmed from their collective subconscious seemed odd as he often placed them in situations that required them to make choices that were against their personal beliefs.

Calvin was also concerned about the team’s latest addition, an alternate version of Illyana Rasputin aka Magik. Mimic came to resent and distrust her and not simply because she had replaced Blink. Illyana would regularly operate behind the team’s back and always opted for the fastest and most violent way to reach a mission goal, with no regard for the cost. [Exiles (1st series) #26-28, 31]

There was one occasion when the Exiles should have listened to Magik’s suggestion to strike swiftly and decisively sooner. The team found themselves on a world where the Avengers had been transformed into vampires. The Exiles had hoped that stopping the vampires from enslaving a city was enough to succeed, but soon realized that they needed to slay the Vampire King. They accomplished this, but as the Exiles were teleporting away the dying Vampire King cast a spell that interfered with the teleport and scattered the team over several different realities. [Exiles (1st series) #32]

While the others only spent days or weeks away before the Timebroker retrieved them, Calvin spent several years on an Earth overrun by the Brood. Druing his years fighting the insectoid aliens, he was infected with a Brood egg several times, but Wolverine’s healing factor dealt with the parasite each time. When Mimic was finally located by the Timebroker and reunited with his team, he had been infected by the Brood once again. He kept quiet about it, believing his healing factor would destroy the Brood embryo in due time.

The Exiles’ next mission involved them interacting with a version of the Fantastic Four on the very day they gained their powers. This Earth’s Ben Grimm had been exposed to a higher dose of cosmic rays and he went on a mad rampage after being transformed into the Thing. While trying to stop him from harming innocent bystanders, Calvin was seriously injured by the Thing. He immediately begged Sasquatch to kill him. Calvin explained to his puzzled teammate that he was carrying a Brood egg and that his healing factor couldn’t keep the parasite in check and deal with his injuries. Before Sasquatch could make a decision, the Brood had already gained dominance. It took the combined might of the Exiles and a serum created by Mr. Fantastic to get Mimic back to normal. Once the danger had passed, the Exiles realized that Sunfire had been killed during the battle. Morph was particularly harsh in his response to Mariko’s death, lashing out at Mimic. Calvin was devastated and blamed him for his teammate’s untimely death. [Exiles (1st series) #35-37]

Blink’s return as Sunfire’s replacement didn’t make things any better. While he was happy to be reunited with his love, Mimic felt that he didn’t deserve such a reward right after him causing Sunfire’s death. Blink comforted him the best she could and Calvin let go of all his anger and frustration. He was sick and tired of performing one mission after another. To keep his sanity, he swore that he would never again take a human life. The Tallus once again manifested on Blink’s wrist and Calvin readily ceded leadership of the team to her.

Mimic’s vow not to kill couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the Exiles found themselves transported to an Earth that had been enslaved by another group of reality-hoppers. These Exiles were led by an evil Hyperion and had gone rogue and no longer obeyed the Timebroker. His rather extreme solution was to pit the teams against each other in a fight to the death. Only the six members who survived this death match would move on as the only remaining team of Exiles. Mimic helped his teammates as best as he could, though he didn’t actively kill any of their rivals. Hyperion did most of the killing until he was tricked into using his powers on himself. In the aftermath of this conflict, the other Exiles forgave Calvin for keeping his Brood infection a secret. [Exiles (1st series) #43-45]

Next, the Exiles were sent to a reality where they were tricked into helping the Brotherhood of Mutants bust their leader, “The Big M”, out of prison. Assuming this leader to be Magneto, Calvin was surprised that the Brotherhood’s boss was this world’s Mimic. Cal got to see how his life would have turned out had he not accepted Xavier’s help. When The Big M telepathically scanned Calvin’s mind, he saw all the ordeals that Calvin had faced and how he had continued to grow as a hero despite his trials. The Big M was so inspired by this, that he changed his evil ways. [Exiles (1st series) #50-51]

Over the course of the next missions, the Exiles' suspicion regarding their mysterious employer increased. The established rules of their operations had suddenly changed. Team members would disappear during the transport to their next location, apparently deemed useless, only to be replaced with new members that caused dissension within the team. One of these new members was the very Sabretooth who had raised Blink in the Age of Apocalypse. It made Mimic uncomfortable to see his lover obey Sabretooth’s every command when before she would always discuss the team’s tactics with him.

Despite their differences, even Sabretooth refused to carry out the latest task the Timebroker assigned to the team: killing Mimic! As punishment for their disobedience, the team was sent to the Blink and Sabretooth’s native reality with orders to kill their old teammates in the X-Men. Instead of performing that horrific mission, the Exiles uncovered a means to access the Panoptichron, the crystal palace out of regular space-time where their orders originated. [Exiles (1st series) #59-61]

Inside, they learned that the Timebroker was a false identity created by an insectoid race who had accidentally damaged the timestream. Unable to repair the damages themselves, they had assembled the Exiles, super-powered beings from various timelines that they considered most suited for the dangerous missions necessary to repair the damage they had wrought. The entire story of the Exiles having become “unhinged in time” was fake. Even worse, the team learned that those recruits that had died or were no longer of use had had been stored inside a crystal wall of the palace.

The evil Hyperion the team had barely defeated was among those imprisoned in this way. He had since regenerated from his injuries, busted out of the crystal wall, and taken over the Panoptichron. The “Timebroker’s” sudden change in attitude was because Hyperion was now in charge. The Exiles fought back against Hyperion once more. During the battle, Calvin combined the mimicked powers of Northstar and Colossus to create his own version of a “fastball special”. He slammed into Hyperion at top speed, temporarily stunning their foe but seriously injuring himself in the process. This bought his team the time they needed to devise a way of stopping Hyperion. He was taken out by two other Hyperions that the Exiles brought in from alternate timelines. [Exiles (1st series) #62-65]

The damage to Mimic’s body was so great that he couldn’t risk shifting out of Colossus’ steel form as his healing factor would not kick in fast enough to heal him. Cal was unable to mimic Sabretooth’s healing factor to bolster his own as his powerset was too similar to that of Wolverine. Calvin allowed himself to be stored in the crystal wall until his teammates could come up with a cure. While most of the team traveled to another reality to retrieve a regenerative serum for Mimic, the rest of the group had to face another former Exile trapped in the crystal wall coming back to life – the maniacal Deadpool. The “Merc with a Mouth” threatened to kill everyone. The Exiles secretly released the dying Mimic from stasis. Deadpool assumed he was no threat but was proven wrong when Calvin copied Deadpool’s powers and was quickly revived. Deadpool’s healing factor healed Calvin’s wounds but there was an unpredicted side-effect. Mimic also displayed Deadpool’s cancer scars all over his body and for some reason could not let go of Deadpool’s power. Naturally, Blink was shocked to find her lover permanently disfigured. [Exiles (1st series) #66-68]

While trying to return one of their teammates to his native reality, the Exiles encountered the dangerous Proteus of the House of M reality. The reality-shaping mutant’s only weakness was metal, so naturally the Exiles counted on Mimic using Colossus’ steel skin and Wolverine’s claws to take Proteus out once and for all. However, Proteus telepathically probed Mimic and reminded him of his vow to never take another life. In the heat of the battle, Cal hesitated and ended up as Proteus’ next host. With access to all of the Mimic’s memories, Proteus learned that there were thousands of other realities out there and he quickly escaped into the multiverse. [Exiles (1st series) #69-71]

The Exiles vowed to rescue their teammate and tracked Proteus through several realities. The villain quickly burned out Mimic’s body and abandoned it for another host. When the Exiles arrived at the site where Proteus had dumped his corpse, Blink was devastated. [Exiles (1st series) #72-73]

The fact that they were able to detain Proteus later provided little comfort. Blink returned Mimic’s remains to Earth-12, where she told his friends and teammates among the X-Men of his adventures and final fate as part of the Exiles. [Exiles (1st series) #83]
