Disaster struck Mojo’s media empire when his team of writers dared to go on strike, having had enough of his inhumane working conditions. Rather than give them what they wanted, Mojo looked elsewhere for writers, even getting desperate enough to hire Sunspot and Cannonball from the New Mutants. Whilst Cannonball was a little reluctant to sign any contracts with Mojo, Sunspot had no issues, being a businessman himself. As the two set out trying to come up with content, Mojo couldn’t help put his own spin on their suggestions. He obviously knew what the viewers of Mojoworld wanted, as his ratings were sky high once more. Whilst he would have denied it when asked, Mojo seemed to enjoy having Sunspot and Cannonball around, so much so that he confided in them that he wanted to be… intimate…with someone.
The men managed to beautify Mojo as much as physically possible and then lined up a bunch of dates with some of the actresses who had been appearing in their productions. Shockingly, every single one of them declined Mojo’s creepy and misogynistic advances and so Sunspot had to think outside the box. After Sunspot bribed one of the actresses Mojo finally seemed to strike it lucky. However, the particular actress Sunspot bribed was acting in the role of the assassin Elektra in the movies, and it turned out she was a method actress. Mistaking the bribe for an assassination contract, “Elektra” attacked Mojo, chopping off his mechanical tail and putting an end to his carnal desires. Mojo went back to concentrating on his business ventures and the movies Sunspot and Cannonball produced were soon wrapping up filming. Naturally, Mojo tried to backstab the boys at the end and force them into a life of slavery, but Sunspot’s business tactics won out and they managed to escape back to Earth. Not long after, Mojo was involved in a hostile takeover of his company, where he was imprisoned by a man named Mr. Veech. Once Mojo was out the way, Mr. Veech put his own programming on, even going as far as creating his own versions of the X-Babies. If Mr. Veech had listened to Mojo, then he would have known to stay clear of the children as they always ruin the best laid plans. Sure enough, the real X-Babies got involved and Mr. Veech ended up being thrown through a portal into another dimension, never to be seen again. [X-Babies #1-4]
Mojo retook control of his production company and once again he turned to the X-Men for inspiration. Kidnapping Wolverine, he forced him to star in some movies before the X-Man escaped. [Wolverine: Development Hell] The clawed hero proved to be a ratings hit and so Mojo decided to bring him back again, only this time he paired him with Spider-Man. To add a little spice to the mix, Mojo used his abilities to throw the men across time and space, constantly keeping them on their toes in increasingly ludicrous scenarios. Naturally, the two of them figured out Mojo was the one pulling their strings and fought back against him, but it didn’t matter to the media tycoon; the viewing figures spoke for themselves. The stress of ruling over an entire dimension took its toll on Mojo and he was forced to take a leave of absence and go to rehab. In his place, Major Domo created a robotic Mojo, that seemed just like the real deal, even down to its violent outbursts. Also, just like the real Mojo, it became over-confident in its abilities, and it was destroyed by Rocket Raccoon and Groot when it tried to make them unwilling stars in one of its shows. During Mojo’s sabbatical, a new board of directors took control of his media empire and he found himself out in the cold when he returned. The new board didn’t fawn over him like many of the others had and Mojo was forced to prove his worth by coming up with some truly inspirational shows. He fell back into his old ways by kidnapping and brainwashing a bunch of Earth’s heroes, making them star in yet another one of his productions. Like every other time before, they broke free of their conditioning and fought back against his schemes. Only this time, Mojo had someone else to answer to and the board of directors were not impressed with his latest escapade. [Uncanny Avengers (1st series) Annual #1]
Out of favor with the media obsessed citizens of his planet, Mojo decided to use his talents elsewhere as a private contractor. Travelling to Earth, he disguised himself in a physics-defying suit and set up a company called “The Yellow Eye” that monitored every known mutant on the planet. Using hundreds of tiny cameras disguised as insects, Mojo recorded the activities of the world’s mutants and then sold the data on the black market to private companies and government agencies. Cable became aware of The Yellow Eye’s activities, but had no idea who was running the show, and so he sent Domino to investigate. Fully aware of the operation, Mojo got the drop on Domino and gleefully explained his plans before brainwashing her. [X-Force (4th series) #7]
Cable and X-Force soon started looking into The Yellow Eye’s activities themselves, and they managed to storm Mojo’s base looking for answers. Using the brainwashed Domino as his own personal bodyguard, Mojo managed to evade the team for a while, using the secrets he’d learned about them to distract them. Psylocke, having had numerous dealings with Mojo over the years, realized who was behind the video monitoring, and forcibly revealed his identity to the rest of X-Force. Never one to stay quiet, Mojo began bargaining for his freedom, spilling more and more of the team’s secrets for all to hear. This deluge of personal information caused the already unhinged Fantomex to have a psychotic break and attack the rest of his team. X-Force escaped from Fantomex, and they took Mojo back to their base as they decided that his surveillance bugs could be put to better use. [X-Force (4th series) #10-13]
Mojo returned to Mojoworld and resumed his TV production duties once again, this time kidnapping Spider-Man and a group of X-Students so they could be his new stars. [Spider-Man and the X-Men #2-3]
When the public started to grow tired of superhero TV shows, Mojo was forced to try an alternative type of programming. Coming across Howard the Duck, Mojo became fascinated with his adventures and realized there were long periods of time where Howard had disappeared from the public eye. He had a brainwave and immediately started auditions to act as Howard and his supporting cast. He even went as far as kidnapping the real actress Lea Thompson and, using mind control, to have her act out the role of Howard’s girlfriend Beverly. In between his scripted show, Mojo showed the adventures of the real Howard to the viewers of the Mojoverse. To make sure there was enough drama, Mojo hired Chipp and Jho, two aliens, to secretly inundate Howard’s life with crazy shenanigans. The plan went well for a while until the real Howard stumbled on Mojo’s filmset and discovered the truth. When Howard fought back against Mojo, the crazed ruler unleashed one of his new minions on him, He-Lix, a gender-swapped version of Spiral. Despite this, Howard still managed to put an end to Mojo’s unethical broadcast of his life, causing the media tycoon to think of new ideas once more. [Howard the Duck (6th series) #9-10]
