For reasons unknown, Mojo abandoned Mojoworld as his main base of operations, and instead set up a new one in secret on Earth. Using his advanced technology, he created a fully articulate hologram of himself on Mojoworld, that could be controlled by himself back on Earth. On the business side of things, viewership of Mojo’s broadcasts was plummeting across all demographics and he knew he had to pull out all the stops if he wanted to maintain his rule. He needed a crossover!
After a bit of brainstorming with his writers, Mojo had the perfect scenario that would give the viewers of the Mojoverse something new, whilst also getting them nostalgic for the classics. He launched a number of skyscraper-sized spires across New York, that enveloped the city in virtual scenarios akin to the X-Men’s Danger Room. Naturally, the X-Men rushed to the spires, only to be trapped in the holographic environments which Mojo had lovingly based on the best stories across the X-Men’s history. As the X-Men fought for their lives, Mojo delighted in their misery as his viewing figures started to skyrocket, but not by the rate he would have liked. To make matters worse, Longshot, who had been monitoring Mojo’s activities for a while and undermining them with his own broadcasts, had become involved. Mojo ramped up his campaign and turned the violence up on the scenarios, which resulted in the apparent deaths of numerous X-Men. Viewers across Earth were glued to their screens, and Mojo capitalized on this by taking to social media and getting the fans to suggest gruesome ways to torture the mutants.
Expanding his playing field, Mojo sent more spires to New York, trapping even more X-Men in his deadly games. Longshot was proving to be a problem for him, as Mojo’s former slave managed to hack a computer and teleport a team of X-Men away. To make matters worse, Longshot’s pirate broadcast was drawing more attention, stealing some of Mojo’s viewers away. His plans were starting to fall apart, as Longshot saved more of the X-Men and discovered the ones that had supposedly died in Mojo’s holograms had actually survived and were being kept in stasis. Longshot and the X-Men made their way to Mojoworld, forcing the media tycoon to reveal the second phase of his plan. Sending even more spires to Earth, he revealed that they were reprogramming the brainwaves of anyone who watched his broadcasts, as well as terraforming the planet to be more like Mojoworld.
When X-Men found his control room, they discovered his holographic replacement waiting for them. As Mojo controlled the hologram from Earth, he boosted its abilities with the power syphoned off Earth’s brainwashed citizens. Realizing that he couldn’t be defeated whilst he was connected to his broadcast systems, Magneto and Polaris created an enormous electromagnetic pulse that fried Mojo’s entire network. Within a few seconds, his entire operation had been destroyed as the spires on Earth vanished and Mojo was cut off from his hologram on Mojoworld. His plan had been stopped at the last minute, but Major Domo informed him that his back-up plan had succeeded. Whilst the X-Men were busy fighting the holographic battles, Mojo had secretly set up a broadcast network on Earth, allowing him to start his own news show aimed at the humans. Despite the potential for his network to take off, not much was heard about Mojo’s new venture. A short while later, it was brought down by a team of X-Men. [X-Men: Blue #36]
Still living on Earth, Mojo continued to broadcast across the Mojoverse and relied on the X-Men for his regular ratings highs. Then one day, something completely unexpected happened…he bumped into a woman and immediately became smitten when she angrily lashed out at him. Unable to get her out his mind, he began frequenting a coffee shop he knew she went to. In spite of his enormous ego, Mojo became tongue-tied whenever he tried to talk to her, often leaving her confused by their interactions. By chance he ran into Glob Herman, a student of the X-Men who was composed of a paraffin-like substance instead of flesh. For someone who had such an obvious physical mutation, Mojo was a little surprised at Glob’s confidence when walking around the city. Rather than killing him, Mojo talked to the boy and struck up an unlikely friendship, but his actions hadn’t gone unnoticed by Major Domo.
Mojo’s right-hand man had followed his boss around and became concerned he was becoming soft the more time he spent amongst the humans. After seeing Mojo escort Glob back to the X-Men’s headquarters, Major Domo unleashed a Sentinel on the team. Fearing what Domo would think, Mojo played along and pretended that he had willingly unleashed the Sentinel himself. However, when Domo revealed he had captured the woman from the coffee shop too, Mojo was forced to drop the façade and rush in to save her. Afterwards, Mojo confessed his feelings to the bewildered woman, who actually agreed to go on a date with him. In the following weeks Mojo started to embrace being on Earth more as he began seeing more of the woman, as well as Glob. [X-Men Black: Mojo]
Mojo eventually travelled back to Mojoworld, but his time on Earth had affected him to the point where he began longing for some romance in his programming. He managed to forcibly bring Spiral back to his side once more and he had her seek out potential X-Men to star in his new show. Unbeknownst to him, Spiral had begun conspiring behind his back to free herself of Mojo and she selected the newly wedded Rogue and Gambit as the new stars. Using his “Wheel of Genre,” Mojo threw them into a Noir-based adventure, but Rogue’s powers inexplicably went out of control and she apparently killed Gambit. Mojo had to think fast as the death of a main character wasn’t what he intended and he brought Gambit back, only for Rogue to kill him again in their next adventure.
Spiral offered to go into the TV show productions to work out what was going wrong, but she betrayed Mojo and kidnapped Gambit and Rogue. Mojo was furious at Spiral, and he sent his troops after her, eventually finding her trying to cure Rogue of her condition. As Mojo and Spiral fought, Gambit appeared having been on a mission for Spiral, and he gave her a mysterious object. Spiral revealed that it was a piece of her soul Mojo had ripped out of her years before and was using it to control her. Unable to control Spiral, Mojo was soon defeated by the combined force of the trio and his TV studio was blown up. [Mr. and Mrs. X #7-10]
Times were changing and, across the omniverse, the way people viewed media was changing too. The days of sitting in front of a TV to view programming were at and end, now it was all about content on the go using apps and mobile devices. Never one to rest on his laurels, Mojo embraced the new digital age and transformed Mojoverse into a content-hungry society. Taking charge of the networks, Mojo knew he wouldn’t be able to fend off competition, so he played things differently. Every citizen on Mojoworld was now able to create content of their own, but they all went through Mojo’s companies, meaning he simply couldn’t lose. Despite the animosity between them all, Spiral, Shatterstar and Arize started working alongside Mojo again, and he used their talents and streaming channels for his own gain. Arize provided Mojo with an endless stream of clones that the psychopath was able to program and slaughter, all for the viewing pleasure of the masses.
Mutants were still the number one draw for viewers, so Mojo was delighted when he got his hands on Wind Dancer, a former student of the X-Men. She became an incredibly popular streamer on Mojoworld, so much so that her suicide on livestream was a ratings bonanza. Mojo was desperate to get his hands on her body and add her DNA to his cloning banks, but he was temporarily deterred by Shatterstar, who claimed her autopsy should also be streamed to the masses. Mojo was denied Wind Dancer’s DNA, as X-Factor arrived and stole it from under his nose, having been tipped off to the situation by Shatterstar. [X-Factor (4th series) #2-3]
Mojo was visited by X-Factor once again when they had gotten sick of him constantly using their lives for his broadcasts. Threatened by Magik, he was forced to tone down his reliance on the mutants or face the consequences. [X-Factor (4th series) #9]
It’s a rare day when Mojo ever learns a lesson, so Magik’s threat will likely be forgotten soon enough. Having moved from TV broadcasting to the digital medium, Mojo’s future as a tyrannical dictator doesn’t look set to end any time soon.
