BIOGRAPHY - Page 3

The two hid from the X-Men for a while but resurfaced when most of the team was seemingly killed and anti-mutant sentiment was on the rise again. They settled into their usual pattern of kidnapping mutants, which earned them the attention of a rag-tag group of surviving X-Men. Like many times before, the two were eventually overpowered and apprehended by the authorities. [War of the Realms: Uncanny X-Men #1]

The mutant race’s luck would soon turn around when Charles Xavier set up the island nation of Krakoa, as well as revealing he had developed a way for any deceased mutant to be resurrected. Krakoa was to be a fresh start for all mutants, no matter their past crimes, and so Nanny and the Orphan Maker were officially invited to live there. Whilst many former villains relished a chance to put their past behind them, Nanny and Peter’s co-dependent relationship set them apart from the rest. Beast and Angel attempted to split the pair up, forcing Peter to interact with children his own age. When he reacted violently, the two X-Men relented and allowed Nanny to calm him down. Nonetheless, the situation became cause for concern amongst Krakoa’s decision makers, the Quiet Council.

After a few weeks, it became apparent that a number of other mutants with questionable pasts were also struggling with the new way of life. Nanny and Peter found themselves standing alongside Wild Child, Greycrow, Empath and former X-Man Havok in front of the Quiet Council. After much debate, it was decided that Mister Sinister would band the group of misfits together as the Hellions, and utilize their skills under his watchful eye. Remembering how she originally saved Peter from Sinister, Nanny issued the geneticists a warning about getting too close to her young ward. [Hellions #1]

The Hellions received their first mission to access one of Sinister’s former clone farms and clear it out. When the team arrived, they discovered Madelyne Pryor had gotten there first and was using magic to co-opt the bodies of the Marauders, turning them into zombies. The team quickly found themselves in a violent fight, with Nanny and the Orphan Maker taking a savage beating from the undead clones. Unable to help Peter, Nanny became concerned when the zombies began to pry open his armor to get to his flesh. The rest of the team saved them in the nick of time before his armor cracked and the destructive force of his unstable powers was unleashed. After destroying the zombies, the team explored the cloning facility further and Nanny was appalled to discover the way Sinister created and disposed of his experiments. Even after the mission was over, she was noticeably distracted by what she had seen, even forgetting to feed Peter, which (as noted by Emma Frost) was something unheard of in the past. [Hellions #2-4]

Not long after, the forces of Krakoa’s “sister” island Arakko declared war on the mutants, using the mystical realm of Otherworld as a pathway to get to them. The ruler of Otherworld, Saturnyne, wasn’t happy at the war being brought to her doorstep, so she created a competition in which both sides had to collect ten swords to later compete with. Whilst the Quiet Council adhered to the competition rules, Sinister gathered Nanny, Peter and the other Hellions to travel to Arakko to steal the other side’s swords. The mission would be perilous at the best of times, but the team soon learned that the resurrection process was corrupted when a mutant died on Otherworld.

They travelled to Otherworld and began their journey across its vast realms to get to Arakko. Unbeknownst to the team, Sinister had sent one of his clones in his own place, with the orders that he was to collect genetic samples of the citizens he met.  After what seemed like an eternity journeying across the land, they made it to Arakko but were met by Tarn the Uncaring and his group, the Locus Vile. Tarn read Sinister’s mind and exposed the secret that he had been delaying the Hellions’ journey so he could collect genetic data. Nanny and the others were furious, but Sinister was more concerned with collecting the Locus Vile’s genes. When he unleashed some gene-collection drones, the Locus Vile attacked and Nanny was immediately vaporized by an energy blast. Orphan Marker went into a fit of rage at the sight of her body, but he was also killed when his arms were ripped right off him. Wild Child sacrificed himself to buy the others more time to escape back to Krakoa and report on their mission. Upon arriving, Sinister murdered the entire team to cover up his subterfuge, promptly lying to the Quiet Council about what really happened. [Hellions #5-6]

As Nanny, Peter and Wild Child died on Arakko and not Otherworld, no one knew exactly how the resurrection process would affect them. They were put in the queue but the mutants in charge of the resurrections noted something unusual about Orphan Maker as his new body rapidly grew. Professor X made the decision to restrict his development to before his X-gene triggered, potentially averting a near disaster. Nanny and Wild Child’s resurrections were also slightly unusual as they saw an increase in muscle mass and sharpened senses. When their psyches were placed back into their bodies it was observed that they had become more focused and certain personality traits were exaggerated. As was noted by the psyche evaluation team, Nanny had become more… Nanny. Once the team was assembled again, their first priority was addressing the resurrection issue with Peter. His suit of armor was vital to contain his mysterious yet potentially world-ending power, however it had been destroyed and its remnants left on Arakko. A new suit was needed before he was brought back and the only schematics for it were on Nanny’s ship which, in an unfortunate twist of fate, had fallen into the Right’s hands months before.

Nanny and the Hellions needed to perform a heist, and so they travelled to Arizona to break into one of the Right’s supposedly secret bases. Upon arriving, they caused a commotion and were met with resistance from some of the robotic Smiley soldiers. Nanny’s new, slightly volatile personality took over and she was one of the first ones to run into the fray, ripping apart some of the robots and surprising her other teammates. When Cameron Hodge revealed his presence, he expected to keep their attention with his monologuing, but Nanny and Wild Child were hyper-focused on the mission and they charged off in search of the ship. When they found it, they violently disposed of the robots guarding it and Nanny was delighted to see the lab and everything in it was intact.

To her surprise, she found an extra reward in the form of a small baby version of a Smiley robot, which had apparently been “born” through artificial means. Never one to turn her back on an orphaned baby, Nanny decided to care for it, but declined to tell the rest of her team for fear they would take it away from her. [Hellions #7-8]

With her ship back, Nanny was able to craft Peter a new suit of armor, and so his resurrection process was allowed to continue. Like Nanny and Wild Child, Peter’s psyche had undergone some changes and he seemed more impulsive and quicker to anger. His body had also grown slightly, causing him discomfort in his new suit. When Nanny offered to alter it slightly, he became angry with her for not doing it immediately, causing her to tell him some hard truths. Peter was not her young boy anymore and he wasn’t the only one who needed her attention now. Peter immediately became jealous of the new baby Nanny was looking after, causing the rift between the two of them to grow. During their next mission of rescuing Sinister from the clutches of Arcade, Peter constantly disobeyed Nanny’s orders, frustrating the rest of the team. [Hellions #9-11]

When Nanny found Peter playing with her new robotic baby, she was furious and she yelled at the boy for being so bad. Peter was devastated at being told off and he swore to keep the baby’s presence a secret. A distraction soon came for both of them when the Sinister clone, who led them through Otherworld weeks before, returned to them with Tarn and the Locus Vile in tow. None of the team could remember the Locus Vile or their roles in their deaths due to how the back-up of each of their psyches worked. However, upon seeing the murderous team, Nanny, Peter and Wild Child felt a surge of something running through their bodies until they couldn’t hold back any longer and they attacked the Vile. The fight was violent and it ended up with the Locus Vile being destroyed, whilst also revealing Sinister’s involvement in the death of the team on Arakko.  [Hellions #12-15]

In the aftermath of the ordeal, the team began to drift apart, as they could no longer trust Sinister to lead them. Nanny turned her back on Peter too, focusing all her attention on her new baby instead. Unbeknownst to her, the scientists at the Right had realized a baby smiley robot had been born and were tracking it down so they could study it. When Nanny returned to her ship, she was stunned to see her estranged husband Harold suddenly appear on one of the monitors. He informed her that he had remote control of the ship and he intended on taking the baby from her. Nanny was furious, but Harold activated the ships’ defensive systems to keep her busy whilst he got the baby into an escape pod, which he could remotely pilot to his base. To twist the knife in further, Harold revealed he has browsed the ship’s systems and discovered various things about Krakoa, including the fact they had their own creche. He set the ship on a collision course for the creche, forcing Nanny to manually self-destruct it before it could crash and kill the children there. Nanny was severely injured in the explosion, which prompted Peter to rush over to her to see if she was alive. Heartbroken over the kidnapping of the baby, Nanny violently lashed out at Peter, causing the boy to run away in distress.

Whilst Nanny recovered in the healing gardens, Orphan Maker was determined to earn her love again and he stole a ship so he could retrieve his “little brother.” When the rest of the Hellion’s realized what Peter had done, they chased after him before he did something everyone would regret. Peter found the Right base and blasted his way in, cutting a destructive path until he found the baby. Nanny’s husband Harold was conducting tests on it, and he gave the child to Peter, knowing how unstable the boy was. The Hellions caught up with him just in time for Nanny to arrive and take the baby off him. Orphan Maker thought she would be pleased he had saved the child but instead she was dismissive of his actions, focusing all her attention on the baby instead. However, the baby’s latent programming began to surface and it recognized Nanny as a mutant and hit her with an energy blast, killing her instantly. Peter was devastated and, when he saw Harold laughing at Nanny’s demise, he calmly grabbed the doctor’s head and snapped his neck, killing him too. Something flipped in Orphan Maker and he slaughtered the remaining doctors before finishing off the soldiers guarding the base. When he exited the base, he was met by local law enforcement, who ordered him to put his gun down. Peter wasn’t in the mood for listening and he murdered the police too, before the Hellions could stop him.

Peter had broken one of Krakoa’s sacred laws “kill no human” and now he needed to answer for his crimes. He was brought before the Quiet Council, who saw no alternative other than to condemn him to the Pit, a prison-like space in the depths on Krakoa itself, reserved for the most heinous of law breakers. As he was being sentenced, Nanny appeared, having been resurrected quickly so she could face trial for bringing a malignant AI to Krakoa. Upon learning what Orphan Maker had done, Nanny opted to be sent to the Pit alongside him.

The Quiet Council did not want to send her as well, as her own crimes were not that severe, so she brazenly declared she would slaughter as many humans as it takes to get herself sent into the Pit too. Nanny’s threats worked and she embraced Peter once more as they both sunk down into the depths of Krakoa. [Hellions #16-18]
