Founding member of West Coast Avengers in (1st series) #1, with his teammates believing he was the original Iron Man. Revealed the truth and accepted as a separate member in #4.
Rhodes first doned the Iron Man identity in Iron Man (1st series) #170, and later took up the War Machine armor in #284. His Stark armor was lost in War Machine (1st series) #17, but replaced with Eidolon Warwear in #18-19. That alien armor was destroyed in Tales of the Marvel Universe #1. He became involved in Sentinel Squad in Sentinel Squad O*N*E #1.
Rhodey was seriously injured in combat, resulting in cybernetic replacement parts and merging him with his War Machine armor prior to Avengers: The Initiative #1. He was cloned into a new, healthy body in War Machine (2nd series) #12. His death was faked in Invincible Iron Man #515, allowing him to go undercover as a new stealth-based Iron Man through #526. He worked through S.H.I.E.L.D. to assume control of newborn A.I. Iron Patriot drones in Secret Avengers (2nd series) #6, becoming Iron Patriot II himself. He would revert to the War Machine identity, but continued using drones through Time Runs Out.
War Machine was killed fighting Thanos in Civil War II #1. Iron Man found a way to resurrect him in Invincible Iron Man #600. Rhodey had long suffered claustrophobia issues ever since he nearly died at the end of his first tour with the armor in Iron Man #216. His death from Thanos triggered this trauma once more, so he chose instead to pilot a mini-vehicle called the Manticore in Tony Stark: Iron Man #2, instead of wearing a form-fitting suit. He eventually returned to the War Machine armor in #17.
