A new threat to the mutant race emerged as the deadly M-Pox disease swept the globe, reducing Emplate’s food source yet again. Many mutants fled underground, as the cause of the disease was a cloud of Terrigen Mists that spread itself over the world. Needing to feed, he found the Morlocks living in the sewers under New York and began preying on them to sustain himself. Knowing that this supply was limited, Emplate used his powers to convert some of the Morlocks into being his servants. He then sent a message to Monet that the Morlocks were in danger, knowing fully well that she would have to enter the sewers to save them. Sure enough, his sister came and she was disgusted when she discovered he was behind the attacks on the mutants. Emplate explained that the dwindling food supply would mean he would soon starve and be forced to return to the other dimension, where his mere presence there was tortuous for him.

Monet had no sympathy but, when she realized that he would kill all the Morlocks until he had none left, she reluctantly changed her tune. She vowed to stay and allow him to feed from her in return for the Morlocks safety, though Emplate was cautious about her offer. His feelings were justified when she turned and attacked him, declaring that he was pathetic and that there was no place in the world for a creature like him. As the two fought, Emplate knew he had no other option left and dissolved his body into a vapor, which was absorbed into Monet. He had forcibly merged his body with his sister’s and, although she was in control, he had infected her with his hunger, as well as a dark voice that twisted her thoughts. [Uncanny X-Men (4th series) #6-10]

Thanks to Sabretooth offering himself up as a food source, Monet did her best to keep Emplate’s deadly urges at bay. As time went on, she began to struggle more and more, especially in the heat of the battle. On one mission, Monet was injured, causing her concentration to lapse and Emplate to take control, feeding on one of her enemies in the process. [Uncanny X-Men (4th series) #11-12]

Not long after, the X-Men went to war with the Inhumans over the Terrigen Mist situation. During the battles, a number of Inhumans were trapped in Limbo, along with Monet and Sabretooth. Whether it was the corruptive qualities of Limbo, or the fact she hadn’t fed in so long, Emplate’s influence took control and she began to feed on the Inhumans. In the aftermath of the war with the Inhumans, the X-Men lost contact with Monet, allowing Emplate’s grip to grow stronger until they became M-Plate once more. [Uncanny X-Men (4th series) #17]

As the X-Men had moved the mansion to Central Park, M-Plate was now free to stalk the various students who walked around the area. After attacking Face, some of the former members of Generation X became aware of Emplate’s influence over Monet and they set out to stop him. M-Plate was confronted by the group and was delighted to see Bling!, their former snack, amongst them. With the powers of both Emplate and Monet, M-Plate was much stronger than the group anticipated, and they managed to quickly feed on Bling!, absorbing her crystalline body and abilities. During the fight Monet managed to wrestle control of her body back for a few moments, and teleported away, stopping M-Plate’s feeding rampage. [Generation X (2nd series) #3-4]

M-Plate continued to feed on Morlocks and anyone else who would stray into the shadows of Central Park, but it wasn’t enough and they needed a sustainable mutant to feed off for a long time. They hatched a plan and used their power to desync the X-Mansion and everyone in it from normal reality. The former members of Generation X and a number of students were now trapped in another plane of reality with M-Plate, who had begun feeding. Using their ability to phase between dimensions, M-Plate managed to get the jump on a number of students, feeding off them and absorbing their powers, growing stronger every time they did it.  Not even the combined might of Husk, Chamber and Jubilee were enough to stop M-Plate, with Monet’s former teammates being unable to reach her mind.

Things started to fall apart for M-Plate when they attacked Hindsight, a student with the power to see the memories of everything he touched. With every person M-Plate attacked, they were inundated with foreign memories and feelings, which weakened the bond between Monet and Emplate. Once the students realized this, they began to get up close and touch M-Plate, putting further strain on Emplate’s influence. In the end, it was Jubilee, Chamber and Husk who broke the hold, by making M-Plate remember all the interactions they’d had with Monet. This was enough for Monet to take full control and Emplate was expelled from her body, separating the two siblings. Naked and dying from the atmosphere of Earth, Emplate begged Monet for help but she refused, forcing him to phase out of reality and back to another dimension. [Generation X (2nd series) #8-9, Generation X (1st series) #85-87]

Emplate remained exiled from Earth for a number of months but the world was about to give him a second chance. Charles Xavier had created a mutant nation on the island of Krakoa and all mutants were welcome, regardless of their past transgressions. Emplate posed a unique problem though as he needed to feed on other mutants to survive, but the answer to this was found on the island itself. Krakoa was sentient and also needed to feed of mutant life-forces to survive. However, by taking a fraction from each resident, it could sustain itself without harming the inhabitants. Emplate was able to feed from willing mutants in small quantities that could sustain him, but not harm the other mutant. [House of X #5, X-Men (5th series) #3]

Now he doesn’t need to kill mutants to survive Emplate finally has a chance to live on Earth amongst his fellow mutants. With Monet and his other sisters also on Krakoa, it remains to be seen if they can all put their past behind them and be a family again.
