The Juggernaut was taken to Crossmoor, the British ultra, maximum security prison. There, deprived of his helmet, he was held in a stasis cage and incapable of movement. Still, he did manage to break out during a riot caused by the Vixen and her men, but he was easily subdued once more by Excalibur’s Phoenix, who knocked him out telepathically. [Excalibur (1st series) #3]

At a later point, several supervillains banded together for the so-called Acts of Vengeance. Their strategy centered around not going against their regular foes, but instead swapping them, while also giving away the heroes’ regular tactics. For his brother, Thor, Loki had the Juggernaut in mind, so he magically summoned him from the Crossmoor prison and transported him to New York. Cain showed himself to be truly unstoppable, as not even Thor’s enchanted hammer was able to knock him over. Instead, as it was about to return to its master, the Juggernaut grabbed it, thus was hurled at the Norse god full force. It was at this point that the New Warriors arrived and kept the Juggernaut busy, allowing Thor time to recover from the blow. Changing tactics, the thunder god then used his hammer to create a vortex that carried the Juggernaut to a supposedly uninhabited dimension. [Thor (1st series) #411-412]

Investigating the Juggernaut’s disappearance from prison, Excalibur sought out Thor. When they together traveled to the dimension in which he had banished the Juggernaut, the heroes were in for a surprise. Not only was the reality indeed populated, but Cain Marko had also become the aliens’ king, there being nobody as powerful as him. The heroes not only had to face him but also his underlings. A rematch between Thor and the Juggernaut was inevitable and once more did the Avenger use his hammer to banish the unstoppable foe, sending him to an isolated meteorite in space. [Thor (1st series) #428-429]

Cain floated through the void of space for months, until he was suddenly transported back to Earth. Black Tom had allied up with a businesswoman, Arianna Jankos, possessing the required money and resources to build a huge interdimensional locator and teleporter to get Cain back. In exchange for this, Black Tom and the Juggernaut helped Arianna to take over the World Trade Center and hold the business tycoons inside hostage. In the resulting battle with Spider-Man and X-Force, Siryn being among their ranks, New York City’s landmark building was severely damaged and Tom critically injured. Though Cain knew he could take on the assembled heroes, he didn’t mind when Deadpool offered his help and teleported both villains away to his master, the mysterious Mr. Tolliver. The Juggernaut plead with Tolliver to get his friend the needed medical attention, which he did, [X-Force (1st series) #2-5, Spider-Man #16] most likely in exchange for Cain’s services. However, not much later, Tolliver was hunted down by Cable, with the Juggernaut left alone.

During the time the Juggernaut had been away, the Gem of Cyttorak had crashed back to Earth and was found by a boy named Stevie. Apparently, the exposure to open space had changed the gem’s capabilities, for Stevie was not transformed into another Juggernaut, but used the ruby in unimaginable ways, from animating wax statues to sending a communication signal halfway around the continent. Learning about this, Cain wanted to reclaim the source of his powers, though it took him several attempts to finally get it. Afterwards, the gem somehow became infused to Cain’s body. [Avengers West Coast #64]

Sometime later, the Juggernaut found himself summoned to a familiar place – the Crimson Cosmos inside the gem. Dr. Strange and Nova had become trapped there and needed Cain’s help in getting free. Cain didn’t enjoy being in this unpleasant place a second time and heavily argued with Strange, but eventually he agreed that their only way out was to find Cyttorak and request their release. However, once they found the entity, Cain changed his mind. Upon seeing yet another simulacrum of the Ruby Gem of Cyttorak atop Cyttorak’s brow, he attacked the being that gave him his powers and wrested the jewel from him. Fearing the power boost it would give him, Nova blasted the stone from his hands. As it returned to Cyttorak, Dr. Strange engulfed the Juggernaut in magical bonds. Having enough of all three of them, Cyttorak sent them back to where they came from. [Doctor Strange (3rd series) #44]

Black Tom slowly recovered, though his mutant power was somewhat mutated and his wounded tissue was not replaced by flesh and blood, but by wood, through which he channeled his energy blasts. Possibly to pay for the bills from Black Tom’s doctors, the Juggernaut agreed to do some freelance work. For a time, he served the Red Skull, having another run-in with the Hulk when he attacked the Skull’s base. [Incredible Hulk (2nd series) #402-404] Somewhat later he took part in kidnapping a lawyer lady, who happened to be a friend of Venom. [Venom: The Madness #1-3] [Thunderstrike #2?, Deadpool: Circle Chase, X-Force #31?]

Eventually, Tom’s wood growth grew out of control and his doctor postulated that only Deadpool’s regenerative healing factor might be able to help. The loyal Juggernaut immediately set out to find Deadpool, having several run-ins with the merc and Banshee and Siryn. Eventually, the doctor indeed obtained a sample of Deadpool’s DNA (from Deadpool’s severed hand) and he arranged the required treatment. Cain had no choice but to leave his friend in the care of Banshee, as the treatment would take quite some time and he himself didn’t have the required resources, besides being on the run from the authorities not being productive either. [Deadpool (1st series) #1-4]

Somewhat later, while in Canada, Cain found himself under attack by the mysterious Onslaught. The battle was rather brief, as a single blow by the near-omnipotent entity sent the Juggernaut flying across the continent, until he crashed down in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he was found by the X-Men. Still dazed and confused, Cain was frightened to the bone and could only repeat his attacker's name. He was taken to the mansion’s infirmary to recover from the trauma. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #322, X-Men (2nd series) #42]

Most of the time he was in the mansion infirmary, Cain was unconscious and nearly comatose. When he finally awoke one day, he was still so disoriented and scared to face Onslaught again that he broke out of the mansion and ran away. The X-Men chased him to a nearby bar, where Cain continued his rampage, warning the X-Men that he had seen what the future had in store for them and it wasn’t pretty. Before he could reveal anything more, he was teleported away to a side-realm by Noah Hunter and Zoe Culloden, whose agency seemed to have a special interest in nobody learning Onslaught’s identity too soon.
