Dani’s training of the specific mutants known as the Young X-Men was eventually ended when those students were folded back into the larger group of young mutants residing in San Francisco. Now, Dani worked alongside Karma, another former fellow New Mutant, investigating an apparent young mutant who was causing trouble in Colorado. Legion had returned and he was seeking revenge against Moonstar, as he believed her to be one of those responsible for his death. [Age of Apocalypse] Having lost contact with both captured women, the other former New Mutants followed to Colorado to investigate. Dani was soon discovered in the local jail by Cannonball but, much to her shock, Cannonball left her in the jail cell “for her own protection.”
Cannonball’s attempt to protect Dani backfired when one of Legion's personas cornered her in the cell. Fortunately, the persona’s attempt to kill Dani was foiled when Magma arrived, destroying the persona before it could succeed. Though he apologized for leaving her there, Dani nonetheless punched Cannonball in the jaw, after which she raided the police station's armory, taking a lot of weapons and promising to hunt Legion down herself. Though chastened, Cannonball angrily told Dani that she had to stop pretending she was still a mutant and ordered her to get into a nearby car and drive away. After thinking for a moment, Dani did as Cannonball told her. Never one to back away that easy, Dani returned in time to save Cannonball from one of the personas that was attacking him. After Legion was defeated, Moonstar simply walked away from Cannonball when he tried to talk to her. [New Mutants (3rd series) #1-4]
When the Humanity Now! coalition marched in San Francisco to promote the “Proposition X” ballot initiative, which would regulate mutants’ right to reproduce, riots erupted in San Francisco. Norman Osborn, the recently appointed director of HAMMER, saw this as an opportunity to bring the X-Men to heel and sent the Dark Avengers in to subdue both the X-Men and the general mutant population residing in San Francisco. To assist against the powerful Dark Avengers, of which the Greek god Ares was a member, Dani travelled to Las Vegas, the current residential home of the Asgardian goddess Hela to offer a proposal. They quickly struck a deal in which Hela restored Dani's Asgardian Valkyrie power, giving Dani the strength to combat Ares. In exchange, Dani was now indebted to Hela for a future, unspecified favor. Returning to San Francisco, Dani engaged Ares in battle and actually defeated him. In the aftermath, Dani relocated to Utopia, along with the rest of the X-Men and the other mutants residing in San Francisco. [Utopia Crossover]
When Cannonball was given leadership of his own squad of X-Men, Dani was shocked to learn that he had not selected her for membership. Furious, she confronted him, railing at him both verbally and physically. Dani accused Sam of letting the fact that she was de-powered cloud his judgment, but Sam assured her it was actually because she disobeyed his orders back in Colorado. Despite their heightened emotions, they eventually came to an agreement. Dani would be on the team but she was warned that it was Sam’s squad and that she had to follow his orders. In turn, Dani voiced her expectation that Sam would treat her like any other member of the team. Around this time, Dani sometimes referred to herself by her old codename, Mirage. When Asgard lay under siege, Dani was summoned to Las Vegas, as Hela wished to call upon the favor Dani now owed her. Specifically, Dani was to be Hel's Valkyrie and bring the bodies of immortals to her. Not too keen on this, Dani rebuffed Hela’s orders, informing the goddess that contracts could be broken. To this, Hela informed Dani that if she didn't follow through on this, then it would be as if she never given Dani the power to defeat Ares – meaning the world now would not be the world they would be living in. Faced with history being rewritten, Dani reluctantly agreed. In addition, Hela warned Dani not to be tempted to assist the living during the Siege of Asgard – she must do her duty and bring the bodies of the immortals to her. With that, Dani and Brightwind were both transported to the city of Asgard, which was currently located in rural Oklahoma. As instructed, Dani located the souls of the immortals and started to rally them to come with her – until she was distracted by the Valkryor, who asked her to join them. Deciding there was time to stop any other warriors from losing their lives, Dani left with the Valkyror, telling the dead they had nothing to worry about anymore. However, while Dani was fighting alongside the Valkryor, deadly beasts called the Disir, which preyed on the souls of immortals, stalked the fallen Asgardians.
Dani returned from battle to find the Disir eating several of the Asgardian souls. She engaged the savage creatures in battle and slayed one of them, causing the others to flee. Dani was remorseful that several of the Asgardian souls she was sworn to protect were now lost forever, but even the comforting words of the Asgardian god of War could not relieve her of her regret. Dani then led the souls of the immortals to Hela. Hela was disappointed in Dani, reminding her that she gave her a duty which she neglected. [New Mutants (3rd series) #10]
When Cable returned to the present day with the young mutant called Hope, who was believed to be the mutant messiah who would save mutantkind from extinction, Bastion rallied many anti-mutant organizations to destroy both Hope and all of mutantkind. The New Mutants squad was tasked with getting into Cameron Hodge's facility, where anti-mutant personnel weaponry was being manufactured, and shutting the plant down. There, the New Mutants team found hundreds of soldiers wearing the armor of their old enemies, the Right, and a battle followed which led to Karma losing one of her legs. After the squad’s situation worsened, Magik being lost to Limbo and Warlock forced to absorb sentient life, Cyclops assigned Cannonball to another team, leaving Dani in charge of the New Mutants squad.
Concerned about the toll that Cable's return and the quest to protect Hope was having on her friends, Moonstar confronted Cable, which caused the protective Hope to stand-up for her adopted father. At first, Moonstar was merely dismissive of the teenage girl but, when Hope grabbed her, Dani actually threatened her. Hope responded by punching Moonstar, resulting in a fight breaking out in the cafeteria on Utopia, watched by many others. Cyclops, worried for Hope, tried to break them up, but Cable stopped him. The fight only ended when they were distracted by an explosion on the island. [Second Coming crossover]
In the aftermath of the tragic recent events of the battle against Bastion and his forces, Cyclops ordered the New Mutants squad on vacation. The team helped each other through the recent events and bonded again as old friends. Unexpectedly though, following the free flow of alcohol and Sam’s boasts about his kissing abilities, Dani and Cannonball passionately kissed each other. This not only surprised Dani but left her speechless. This unexpected change in Sam and Dani's friendship was interrupted by trouble with Magik, who required the team’s help. Via her powers, the team was transported to Limbo, where they were came into conflict with the now grown “Inferno babies,” whom the New Mutants had fought hard to save many years earlier during the Inferno conflict. Much to their horror, the team learned that the government had taken the infants to Limbo, where time ran more quickly, and the babies were now adults filled with anger at the New Mutants for their fate. Outnumbered, the team fell to the Inferno mutants, who proceeded to torment their captives. Strapped with explosives to prevent him from using his powers, Cannonball could only watch as Dani was tortured. In an act of defiance, Dani ignored her captors, while informing Sam that Lila Cheney was right – he was a good kisser. Unfortunately, the Inferno mutants’ plans soon came undone due to the machinations of Magik. Dani herself managed to escape and free Cannonball, just in time to see Magik unleash first the Elder Gods and then Legion, the latter of whom wiped out the threat of the Inferno mutants forever. The crisis passed, Dani and the New Mutant squad returned to Utopia. [New Mutants (3rd series) #15-21]
Dani visited Sam in Utopia's infirmary, where she learned that he had stepped down from active duty and from leading the New Mutants squad. Dani feared that without Sam there was no team anymore, especially with Magik and Karma out of action. Before she left for her meeting with Cyclops, Dani received a surprise kiss from Cannonball and agreed that they could continue that later. When she met with Cyclops, Dani was surprised at the good feedback he gave the New Mutants squad, and even more so when he asked her to assume leadership. Cyclops tasked Dani's New Mutant squad with tidying up the many loose ends the X-Men had let slip by recently, starting with finding Nate Grey and bringing him home. Even though she was co-leader of the original New Mutants, Dani proved skilled as a leader even without her powers, encouraging the best out of her team. Even up against the diabolical Sugar Man, who was holding Nate Grey prisoner, they were able to complete their assignment and bring Nate back to Utopia. [New Mutants (3rd series) #25-27]
When the Asgardian God of Fear was unleashed and gave seven hammers to beings known as the Worthy, they became his avatars of destruction, spreading fear which the Serpent God fed upon. The X-Men's foe the Juggernaut was one such Worthy and, while he was causing chaos in San Francisco, Dani was sent by Cyclops to Las Vegas to meet with Hela, given their relationship. However, en route, Dani’s jet was downed by an enormous flock of ravens. Waking up, Dani found herself in a wasteland next to a set of Valkyrie sword and armor. Her location quickly became apparent when a raven cawed Hela’s name, implying to Dani that she was in Hel.
With the raven as her guide and with the aid of her horse Brightwind, who had also suddenly appeared, Dani raced through Hel until she came across a seemingly countless number of spirits who warned her that a fate worse than death was headed their way – evil dead gods called the Draumar. Dani flew on with Brightwind to Hela's citadel, which indeed was under attack by the large ancient gods. Declaring herself Hel’s angel, Dani attacked the gods but found herself outmatched. It was only when she was joined by her fellow New Mutants, who had come looking for her, that Dani made it past the gods, where they discovered the apparently dead Hela. However, the raven which had guided Dani climbed into the mouth of Hela, reviving her. Hela then explained that the raven had been her soul, which she had sought out Dani for protection. With Dani and the rest of the New Mutants at her side, Hel defeated the Draumar. Though this did not stop the greater conflict with the Serpent God, the heroes of Earth ultimately managed to defeat the Asgardian god of fear. Shortly after, a philosophical schism took place among the mutants on Utopia, leading to the X-Men and the island’s mutant population having to choose between the values of Cyclops or Wolverine. Wolverine and his followers left Utopia and returned to Westchester, where the Xavier Institute was re-established and renamed the Jean Grey School. Meanwhile, Cyclops and his followers remained on Utopia. Moonstar and many of the New Mutants were among those who decided to remain. Moonstar was of the view that her team's new assignment was very important and still had work to do. However, when she met with Cannonball, Dani learned that he was returning to Westchester. The couple parted on good terms, with their relationship not completely over. [X-Men: Regensis #1]
