Believing that the New Mutants squad could in fact do more away from Utopia, Dani was given permission from Cyclops to move back into San Francisco and the team, of which Nate Grey was now a member, rented a house on Mission Street. There, Dani was quick to befriend their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Livitz, and encouraged her team to live in the real world so they can all learn about life. [New Mutants (3rd series) #33]

When Dani's teammate Cypher started to have some issues following his resurrection, the team journeyed back to Paradise Island, the place where he had died. There, Dani's attraction to Nate Grey became evident when Nate told Dani that he thought Cypher was a liability. Similarly, Nate showed concern for Dani when the team was attacked by their old ally, Bird-Brain, who they discovered was suffering from some kind of plague that had infected the island. Warlock quickly determined that the plague was dangerous to the rest of the world and told the New Mutants that they could not leave the island for fear of spreading the sickness. The team made their way to the Anti-Mator's laboratory, where they encountered more infected Ani-Mates, and began searching the old lab for a cure before the plague could overwhelm them completely. Taking some time to rest, Dani found herself holding Nate's hand – and to their horror, their hands soon became fused together. Adding to their problems, the Ani-Mator, long thought dead, attacked them. Dani was unable to participate much during the battle, due to being fused to Nate, but fortunately the combined efforts of Warlock and Cypher were able to defeat the Ani-Mator and cure the plague that had infected the New Mutants and the Ani-Mates. As the team prepared to leave Paradise Island, Dani kept her distance from Nate, now that they were no longer fused together. [New Mutants (3rd series) #38-40]

While enjoying a night out in Low Town, Madripoor, Dani discovered Nate had left the group's fun activities and found him down an alleyway, drinking on his own. When Dani learned he didn't dance, she grabbed him and started to dance with him. When she told him that he hadn't said much since leaving Paradise Island, Nate explained that he was confused about how he felt about her, but Dani seemed to feel the same way, as the kissed. [New Mutants (3rd series) #41]

Asgardian troubles soon became Dani's troubles once again, as a neighbor of the New Mutants' was secretly the Asgardian god Sigurd, who was hiding out from the vengeful Disir, whom he had previously tricked. When the Desir tracked him down, Sigurd cast a spell to vanquish them, but in the process all the heroes of Asgard were unwritten from history, all becoming regular humans with no memory of their true nature. The only one exempted from this rewriting of reality was the de-aged, now adolescent Loki, who joined forces with the New Mutants to save the Asgardians. Unfortunately, the spell the young Loki cast not only restored the Asgardians to their true nature, but also the Disir. Dani was once again compelled to do the bidding of Hela as Hel's Valkyrie and, with the New Mutants and Asgardians working together, the Disir were eventually defeated. [Exiled crossover]

Following a harrowing time-travel adventure, Dani and the New Mutants squad took some time out to have a party, inviting many of their friends. During this evening, Sam noticed the way Dani and Nate were with each other, and told Dani that he didn't want to stand in her way. Dani assured him that their friendship is eternal. Dani also met with Wolverine, who told her that she had to keep doing what she was doing. [New Mutants (3rd series) #50]

Home alone one evening, Dani found herself under attack by a group of mercenaries. At first, Dani easily dispatched her attackers, until their commanding officer appeared and took her out. Waking up, Dani found herself the prisoner of a woman called Caroline Le Fey, who told Dani that she wanted to be like her – a Valkyrie. A new group of all-female Defenders consisting of Valkyrie and Misty Knight located the catacombs in which Caroline Le Fey was operating and, after battling the Doom Maidens, they rescued Dani. She returned to New York with the others but, when she learned that Warrior Woman had been tasked with taking Dani back to Hela, Dani refused, opting instead to help the Defenders against Caroline Le Fey and her Doom Maidens. With the help of several other heroines, the team was able to defeat the Doom Maidens. [Fearless Defenders #2-6]

The team continued to work together, which caused some concern for their respective boyfriends and lovers. While the men, including Cannonball and Nate Grey, met to discuss how to “help” the women, Dani and the other Defenders were busy fighting more associates of Caroline Le Fey. Cannonball and Nate Grey both wondered why the other was at the meeting, neither of them exactly sure about their status with Dani. At this point, Nate revealed to Cannonball about his “Madripoor thing” with Dani. When the men finally joined the women in battle, Dani was annoyed with Nate for telling Cannonball, as she was going to do so. However, in the aftermath, Sam told them, somewhat unconvincingly, that he was busy with the Avengers anyway. [Fearless Defenders #9]

Although the threat of Caroline Le Fey still loomed, the all-female Defenders soon parted ways. By happenstance, the New Mutants squad all moved on to other interests as well, despite the repeated reinforcement that there was need for their team and the work they did. Dani eventually surfaced back in Westchester at a gathering following Nightcrawler's resurrection [Amazing X-Men (2nd series) #6] but she maintained a low-profile afterwards, until the Terrigen Mists were revealed to be deadly to mutants. Dani's Asgardian power enabled her to have visions of the mutants who had been struck by the Terrigen Mist and were dying. With Magik as her teleporter, Dani was able to get to these dying mutants and take them to the safety of X-Haven, a refugee camp the X-Men had established in Magik’s Limbo realm. During one rescue mission, Dani reminisced about the old days with Magik, before discovering the mutant she was seeking was one of the X-Men's antagonists, Lady Mastermind. Despite their history, Dani was able to rescue Lady Mastermind and take her to X-Haven, where she recovered. [All-New X-Men Annual #1]

With the danger of the Terrigen Mists no longer looming over mutantkind, the X-Men re-settled in Central Park, as both an active team of X-Men and a teaching faculty. Moonstar is residing with the X-Men, assisting both on missions and with pastoral responsibilties around the mansion.
