While her teammates got to know each other better and train in the use of their powers, Narya had to further adjust to human life, spending much of her time at the RCMP post somewhere in the North West Territories of Canada. She didn’t particularly enjoy her job as records officer, and the fact that Chief Inspector Cramner had unexpectedly died and his predecessor Chief Hamilton did not approve of her open hours, as he couldn’t be made aware of Snowbird’s situation, didn’t help much either. After yet another of her unexplained disappearances, “Anne” was court-martialed by Chief Inspector Hamilton, who, against the protests of Anne’s colleague Doug Thompson, put her in a cell until he could investigate her actions. Doug offered her his help, but Narya refused, not that she didn’t want his aid, but knowing that there was nothing he could do.

Alone in her cell, Narya pondered her situation when suddenly her mystic senses alerted her to another of the Great Beasts, Kolomaq, having broken free of the barriers.  Swiftly she changed into her Snowbird form and smashed through the outer wall of cell, and confronted the foe. Kolomaq trapped her in a blizzard, but she managed to trap him in a landslide. Snowbird battled and successfully defeated Kolomaq. When the battle was over, Narya contemplated her future, thinking about how two of the Beasts had already broken free in as many months, and well aware that when all of them were destroyed her time on Earth would be done. Her cover identity being more of a liability, she didn’t even bother to return and explain herself to Chief Hamilton. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #6]

Several weeks later, James Hudson sent a distress call to his teammates from New York, where he was attacked by Omega Flight. Narya was one of the first to arrive at the gathering point, along with Shaman. She tried to settle his unsure thoughts he was having about someone close to him dying by suggesting that he misread the signs and reminding him that even the fates keep secrets from adepts such as them.  Once all of Alpha had assembled, Shaman teleported them to Hudson in New York, right into the heart of the battle. Before she could enter the fray, Snowbird was struck down by an unseen force, her powers suddenly vanishing from her. It was then that Diamond Lil attacked her, using one of her indestructible hairs to strangle Narya, who revealed that she must not be allowed to bleed, a limitation of her immortality. Shaman came to his teammate’s aid, and upon seeing her wither away before him, he realized that when he bound Snowbird to the land during her birth, he had bound her specifically to Canada. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #12]

Despite Shaman’s premonition that someone close to him would die, it was not Narya, but James Hudson himself (or so everyone believed at the time). Once the team had returned to the Great North, Snowbird was revitalized and warned by Twoyoungmen not to tax herself, as she was still not fully recovered. Despite Narya’s protests she was also reminded that while she had the wisdom of the gods and powers beyond comprehension, she had not yet the required experience to let the wisdom serve her. In truth she was less than six years old and should not deny herself the richness of the life she has yet to experience. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #14]

Narya tried to follow Shaman’s advice and returned to the only human friend she had outside of Alpha Flight – Doug Thompson.  In the guise of Anne McKenzie she visited him at his home, wanting to thank him for his kindness towards her and also to explain to him the reasons for her odd behavior. Yet as she couldn't find the words to describe it, she simply showed him by transforming into Snowbird right before his eyes. Narya explained why the identity of Anne McKenzie had been created and prepared to leave as she had already told Doug more than what she should have, but suddenly Doug professed his love for her. Startled by this development, Narya agreed to meet him again sometime later, which she did. She tried to tell him that she could not return his affections, but Doug simply grabbed and kissed her – the first kiss Narya ever received. Taken by surprise and filled with human emotions she had suppressed to this point, Snowbird could no longer deny that she was attracted to Doug too, however, she wanted him to fully know what he would get involved in and showed him her so called True Fires, her godly form. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #15, 18]

Several days later, Snowbird joined some of her teammates at Fort Calgary as they prepared to journey into the past, where they would continue dealing with an opponent that Shaman and his daughter, Elizabeth, had recently encountered. Narya felt that as the opponent was a Great Beast she should be there as it concerned her the most. However, upon laying eyes on Elizabeth Twoyoungmen, Snowbird surprised everyone by kneeling before her, something Narya would never do to anyone except her own family, the Arctic Gods, or the long-awaited Talisman – which as Snowbird predicted, Elizabeth turned out to be. In the past, Snowbird and her teammates found Ranaq the Devourer and Narya ordered everyone to stand aside while she prepared to destroy him, displaying a colder side to herself. Once the team returned to the present, Snowbird heatedly argued with Shaman about the best way for Elizabeth to go about her new abilities. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #19-20]

Soon after, both the X-Men and Alpha Flight were alerted to a threat originating from Ungava Bay. There, the Asgardian god Loki had created a large castle in the middle of a snow-covered area, its inhabitants being the passengers of a small plane piloted by Cyclops and his wife, Madelyne.  A magical fountain within the castle evolved all humans into super-powered folks. However, the special gifts came with a price - the death of all magic and imagination. Snowbird soon felt the effect and was physically weakened, and also she began to fade from people’s memories. Wolverine however remembered his old friend, and tracked her withering form down to an abandoned cave, where she had hidden herself to die. Once the other involved people learned of the price of their powers, they denied Loki’s gift, and Snowbird was revitalized. [X-Men & Alpha Flight (1st series) #1-2] Sadly for Snowbird and Wolverine, this would be the last time they would ever see each other for many years.

Barely recovered, Snowbird soon found herself caught between her duty as Champion against the Great Beasts and her love for her friends and the mortal aspects of her life. Over the recent weeks Narya had been suffering strange pains and odd occurrences, such as stains appearing on the earth where she stood or  falling out of the air mid-flight. Eventually Narya realized the Gods were angry with her performance, and when she asked them for their reasons, they revealed to Narya that she had been lax in her duties as Earth’s Champion against the Great Beasts, as one of them, Tanaraq, still roamed free. When they showed her an image of Tanaraq, Snowbird was shocked to learn that he was none other than her teammate Sasquatch, the radiation accident a few years ago not having transformed Walter Langkowski, but fused him together with this Great Beast. Not wasting any time, Snowbird sought out Alpha Flight, but it was too late. In the same instant she arrived, Tanaraq fully emerged. In order to stop him, Narya transformed herself into a white Sasquatch and ended the battle by ripping out Sasquatch/Tanaraq’s heart. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #23]

Remaining calm and collected after the painful task she just accomplished, Narya informed her teammates that the soul of Walter Langkowski was alive and could still be rescued from the Realm of the Great Beasts. Alpha Flight traveled north, to a spot called the Eye of the World, from where they could depart to the Realm of the Great Beasts. When Northstar wanted to leave, rather unhappy about being summoned as he had quit the team, Snowbird displayed a power she had previously not done before – the ability to compel others into aiding her against the Great Beasts if they would not do so willingly. This led to another argument between Snowbird and Shaman, who argued over the ethics of using manipulation on the fragile human mind.

Once the team arrived in the other dimension, they found themselves opposed by not only one but all seven of the Great Beasts, all the while they were trying to rescue their friend’s soul. Narya fought the Beast’s leader, Somon the Artificer, in the form of a polar bear and nearly gave in to the animal’s blood lust.  She only stopped attacking when Shaman reminded her of them needing Somon to find Langkowski’s soul. However, when the Great Beasts tricked them into nearly sacrificing half the team’s lives, Snowbird killed Somon using nothing but her own hand. The Beasts overcome and Walter’s soul retrieved, Alpha Flight returned to Earth where Snowbird declared that with the Great Beasts destroyed, her time on Earth was done, and she flew away to the Paradise-like realm her family resided in. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #24]
