Archangel’s Uncanny X-Men

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #395
Members: Archangel, Chamber, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Northstar, Stacy X, Wolverine

Membership History

Alongside the X-Treme X-Men and Morrison’s X-Men, the third team created from the major title shake-up featured in Uncanny X-Men (1st series). The beginnings of it were first shown in #394, which featured Archangel, Wolverine, Jean and Cyclops. After that story, Wolverine and Archangel continued the team together and added Iceman and Nightcrawler in #395 with the first arc dealing with Chamber, who was dating the pop star Sugarkane. First appearing in Generation X (1st series) #1, he was a mainstay of the team until it disbanded in #75, after which he was offered membership to the X-Men. Declining the invitation, he returned home to London, where he saved Sugarkane from a mob and began dating her, earning the wrath of the tabloid press in the process. The two soon broke up and Chamber reluctantly accepted the X-Men’s invitation in #398, officially joining the team.

A brand-new member was to join in #400, having first appeared in the previous issue. Stacy X was using her pheromone-controlling powers as a prostitute at Ranch X, a subsidiary of one of Archangel’s companies. When the X-Men investigated the premises, they happened to save Stacy X from an attack from the Church of Humanity. After proving herself in battle, and with nowhere else to go, Stacy X was allowed to join the team, though a few of the X-Men felt uneasy having a former prostitute amongst them.

Wolverine tended to feature on and off throughout the run, as he was also on multiple other teams at the same time. Despite this, the team remained relatively stable for a while, but soon picked up another member. Most of the recent new members joined because of circumstance, but Northstar was one of the few whom Professor X sought out personally. Debuting in X-Men (1st series) #120, Northstar had briefly assisted Jean’s Genoshan assault team a few months before but declined full-time membership afterwards. As the teaching staff at the mansion was dwindling in numbers, Xavier sought out Northstar as a business and economics teacher. The former Alpha Flight member accepted the offer in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #414 and took a place on Archangel’s squad.

Stacy X would be the first one to leave the team sometime off-panel after #417. Many of the X-Men took issue with her former lifestyle and her aggressive attitude. After butting heads with a number of the team Stacy X quietly slipped away, though she left Archangel a provocative video message that he discovered in #422.

Havok’s Uncanny X-Men

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #423
Members: Archangel, Chamber, Iceman, Havok, Husk, Jubilee, Juggernaut, Nightcrawler, Northstar, Polaris, Wolverine

Membership History

Whilst the team remained active, a few events were going on in the background that would shake things up a bit. In Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #423, an attack by the Church of Humanity saw a number of mutants, some of whom were former members of the various X-teams, crucified on the front lawn. Archangel used his healing blood to save some of their lives but, in doing so, he was severely weakened.

It was around that time when another former Generation X member joined the team. First appearing in New Mutants (1st series) #42, Husk was the younger sister of Cannonball and had always set her sights on joining the main X-Men squad. After starring in the Generation X series, she began working alongside the X-Men around #417. After helping them out and starting a relationship with Archangel, Husk officially joined the team in #423 to help deal with the Church of Humanity.

With their leader unfit to go on active duty for a while, it was up to a former X-Man to step in and take control of the team. Havok had been presumed dead after he disappeared during a fight with a man called Greystone in X-Factor (1st series) #149, but he eventually showed up as a coma patient in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #411. He was taken to the X-mansion where he was soon brought out of his coma in #420, after which he took over as the squad leader in #423.

The next new member was another controversial inclusion to the team when the long-standing villain Juggernaut was allowed to join. First appearing in X-Men (1st series) #12, Juggernaut was revealed to be Professor X’s step-brother and for the next few decades he would become a recurring thorn in the X-Men’s side. That all changed in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #412 when his life was saved by a young boy named Sammy. When offered a second chance by Xavier, Juggernaut reluctantly took it and moved to the X-mansion. After bonding with Sammy and helping the X-Men now on some missions, he asked Cyclops if he could officially join a squad. Cyclops turned him down point-blank but Havok gave him the benefit of the doubt and Juggernaut became an X-Man in #425.

As a former flame of Husk’s, Chamber wasn’t too happy to see her and Archangel together and he began to question his place on the team. The X-Men soon learned that the Weapon X Program had started up again and they wanted to gather information on it. When Chamber heard about this, he volunteered to go undercover for them. To get him accepted into their ranks, he needed to be publicly disavowed by the X-Men, so in Weapon X (2nd series) #15 he got into a fight with the team and was handed over to the authorities by the X-Men. The plan worked but Chamber would not be able to work on Havok’s squad anymore.

Just as Chamber left, Jubilee returned to the X-Men to deal with the death of her friend Skin during the Church of Humanity attack. After reconnecting with Generation X teammate Husk, Jubilee began working for Havok’s team in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #429. Also re-joining in the same issue was Wolverine, who decided to lend a hand after Nightcrawler was kidnapped by his father Azazel.

Upon hearing that Havok was alive and well, Polaris had returned to the X-Men to be with her former boyfriend. Still recovering from his coma, he agreed to marry her but quickly regretted his decision. Him breaking up with her on the wedding day and announcing his love for someone else caused Polaris to have a mental breakdown. After the X-Men stopped her rampage, she remained at the mansion and was put in Xavier’s care. After a while she began going out on missions again and was seen aiding Havok’s team in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #434.

After the destruction of New York thanks to Magneto/Xorn, Xavier left the X-Men and Cyclops took over as headmaster of the school. He did a big shake-up of the teams, one which coincided with a shake-up of the writing duties on the X-titles. X-Treme X-Men (1st series) was cancelled and Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) was launched in its place, whilst New X-Men (1st series) was renamed back to X-Men (2nd series).
