Angel’s transition into the school was just as hard on his old friends as it was him. Many of them didn’t know how or why he was seemingly a different person but they still tried to interact with him as if he was their old friend. When he saw a family burying a pet dog, he didn’t understand the ritual and offered to bring the pet back to life, stating he was a real angel. Iceman was angry and confused by his friend’s actions and knew Wolverine was somehow involved. Iceman ended up taking responsibility for Angel during the initial days at the school and he made sure he was signed up to the regular classes. The changes to Angel weren’t just limited to his mind and body though; his healing powers were also affected, as the dog he tried to help earlier miraculously came back to life. Thanks to the machinations of the new Hellfire Club, Angel was soon removed as CEO of Worthington Industries, because the board of directors thought that he must have had some kind of mental breakdown. Whilst Angel seemed oblivious to the situation, Wolverine was feeling the strain more, as he relied on the money from the company to fund his school. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #5]

During a recent fight, Wolverine’s legs were severely damaged and Angel, believing himself to be working on God’s behalf, tried to fix him. Wolverine had enough of Angel’s naivety and outright told him he wasn’t a messenger of God; he was just a mutant. Angel was aware of his past but he had no memory of it still and was just relying on everyone else’s stories. In a bid to see if he could find heaven in the stars, he took a spaceship and flew off with a few other students. They landed on another planet but they just ended up fighting a lot of aliens. During the adventure, he bonded with Evan, who was in a similar situation of being judged by his actions from another life. Angel may not have found what he was looking for but he did find a sense of self and purpose on his little journey. Angel tried again soon after to fly as high as he could go to find heaven but he passed out and fell to Earth. Evan managed to catch him and this time Angel began to realize that he might not be as divine as he thought he was. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #8, 10]

When the Phoenix Force returned to Earth, the X-Men and Avengers went to war over what to do about it. Angel decided that, even though he may not be working for God, he was still a mutant and could help any fellow mutants who were in need. With that, he helped track down Hope Summers, who was prophesized to become host to the Force. Angel ended up searching Wundagore Mountain for her and ran into a group of Avengers. He ended up taking on Hawkeye and, even though he put up a good fight, it was the Avenger’s underhand tactics that won out.

Angel was shot point-blank in the stomach trying to save Psylocke and his injuries prompted the Phoenix-powered Emma Frost to exact a brutal revenge on Hawkeye later on. [Avengers vs. X-Men #3-4, AvX: Vs. #5]

Soon enough, the X-Men were the ones with the upper hand and the Avengers were being hunted down. Hope was still at large and, once Angel was healed, he joined in the search for her. At Chaparanga Beach, the X-Men came across a group of Avengers and Angel went toe-to-toe with War Machine. He was initially out-classed by the armor-clad man but, when Angel waved his hands at his adversary, the armor literally exploded off him. Angel was left a little confused as to what he did but the chaos of the battle meant he couldn’t think about it for long. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #12]

Once the Phoenix situation was over with, things started to get back to normal for the X-Men again. Angel had proved invaluable in the field during the previous few weeks and, because of that, coupled with the fact he was smarter than most of the other kids, he was allowed to graduate school. Wolverine still wanted him around, though, so he was promoted to graduate assistant and would help the other students out in class. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #15]

Angel was beginning to get a grasp on his new life and soon sought the legal advice of Matt Murdoch in getting his company back. After telepathically wire-tapping the various board members, he proved that they had illegally conspired to have him removed as CEO. Angel managed to wrestle control of his company back and his first act was to fire the existing board of directors and replace it with students from the school. Angel himself had no interest in running the company, as his true calling was still in helping disadvantaged mutants. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #19]

Angel continued to be studied by Beast and Warren’s recent display of a new power gave him cause for concern. Beast explained to Angel how the Life Seed had created him and in fact it was still acting as an energy source. Once the energy was gone, then he would be in serious danger. Angel saw things differently though and vowed to make the most of the power he had left to help as many mutants as possible. Since the Phoenix incident, new mutants had been popping up all over the world and Angel wanted to be an ambassador so he could try and save as many mutants as possible. His first assignment was to go to Brazil and deal with a young girl named Iara dos Santos who had just discovered she could turn into a shark. Angel found the "Shark girl" a difficult subject to deal with and things got worse when Mystique showed up, also trying to recruit Iara. During the fight that broke out, Angel manifested a sword made of light and easily took down Mystique’s teammate, the Silver Samurai. Shark Girl had been captured by Mystique but shifted into shark-form and was about to kill the woman. Angel grabbed Iara and flew her away before she could do anything she would later regret. Shark Girl eventually joined the school and spoke to Angel afterwards, expressing gratitude for stopping her from becoming a murderer. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #20]

Angel was joined by a squad of X-Men when a new mutant who could communicate with machinery registered on Cerebro. The team came into conflict with a new Freedom Force team but ultimately lost the mutant to them. [X-Men (3rd series) #40-41]

When Beast brought the younger versions of the original X-Men from the past and into the present, Angel got to meet the boy he used to be. Whilst he was fascinated by the “older model,” his younger self was shocked and confused as to how he would end up with metal wings. The young Warren tried to quiz him on the events that caused his transformation but given Angel’s wiped mind he wasn’t much help. As the two were flying around New York, they ended up helping fend of an attack on Avengers Tower by Madame Hydra. When the Avengers returned and discovered two Angels before them, Captain America had some choice words to say to Beast about the situation. The younger Warren ended up staying in the present, meaning there were now two versions of him flying around with the X-Men. [All-New X-Men (1st series) #8]
