With Nextwave’s mission accomplished, the team eventually went their separate ways. Tabby retained her powers following M-Day and she journeyed to San Francisco, where the X-Men had established themselves. While out enjoying a day shopping, Tabitha decided to return to her second code-name, “Boom-Boom.” On the same outing, she also chanced upon the mutant Nuwa, who had relocated to San Francisco and turned to a life of crime. Boom-Boom tried to prevent Nuwa from robbing a store, but Nuwa defeated Boom-Boom. This confused Boom-Boom, being defeated by a mutant of whom she had never heard, as well as one with “lame powers.” With the Beast’s help, Boom-Boom did some research, found out what she needed to know about Nuwa, tracked her down while robbing another store and defeated her. [X-Men: Manifest Destiny #1]
The next time Boom-Boom was out shopping, however, things didn’t go so well, as she was abducted by the mad Leper Queen. The Leper Queen sought death and, as part of an elaborate plan, expected that she would be killed by Boom-Boom’s rescuers. Indeed, the team sent to rescue Boom-Boom was X-Force, who served as the X-Men’s secret kill-squad. As it happened, however, this mission to save Boom-Boom was a side-mission they hoped to complete while waiting for a sensitive time-travel mission to activate and teleport the into the future. Unfortunately, in the middle of confronting the Leper Queen, X-Force was teleported away through time, leaving Boom-Boom at the mercy of her captor. In her rage and madness, the Leper Queen chose this moment to shoot Boom-Boom point blank in the head.
Fortunately, once their mission was complete, X-Force member X-23 teleported back to the present time, arriving an instant before the Leper Queen killed Boom-Boom, and shot the villainess several times, saving Boom-Boom. In a quick turn of events, however, agents of HAMMER arrived and took both Boom-Boom and X-23 into custody. Boom-Boom’s troubles continued when the agents were ordered to take samples of both mutants and then dispose of them. One agent attempted to assault Boom-Boom while doing so, but fortunately Boom-Boom was rescued once again, this time by Warpath. Tabby was taken back to Graymalkin Industries to recover from her traumatic ordeal. [X-Force (3rd series) #13, 17-18]
Following the “Utopia” battle, Boom-Boom moved to the island nation along with the majority of mutant kind. Despite her experience as a fighter and working with teams, Boom-Boom was not assigned to any specific roster. She did, however, assist with the defense of the island, and on the occasional mission. She was particularly useful against the Predator X creatures that attacked Utopia. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #517] Boom-Boom seemed to recover from her tragic experiences quickly and, when X-Factor Investigations visited Utopia, she was reunited with her former X-Force teammates Shatterstar and Rictor. It would appear that Tabby was not aware Shatterstar and Rictor were now an official couple, as she completely ignored her ex-crush Rictor, and flirted with Shatterstar, whom she evidently decided was looking so much better than he used to be. [X-Factor: Nation X #1]
During a dire battle in which several of the X-Men's human enemies rallied together against mutantkind, Boom-Boom assisted the X-Men by working alongside several other mutants on Utopia to fight Sentinels in the tunnels of San Francisco. [Second Coming crossover] Following the philosophical “schism” between Wolverine and Cyclops, she remained with Cyclops’ followers and soon joined his “street team” of X-Men, though this team was never shown in action. Boom-Boom did actively participate in the X-Men’s battle with the Avengers. [Uncanny X-Men (2nd series) #1, 12]
With not much else going on in her life, Tabby agreed to assist Domino on a mission to break into the Raft Maximum Security Prison to liberate an alien held in a secret S.W.O.R.D. intergalactic containment prison within the facility. Boom-Boom was sent to free the alien but, after blowing up the capsule the alien was held in, Boom-Boom found herself attacked by the alien. Along with the rest of Cable's new X-Force team, Boom-Boom was briefly taken into space. [Cable and X-Force #6-8] Upon returning to Earth, Boom-Boom and the X-Force team settled at the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Southern Montana. Tabby's boredom was quickly interrupted by the arrival of the Avengers Unity Division, who had been tracking Cable and his team. During the battle that followed, Tabby faced off against Sunfire. [Cable and X-Force #10]
Tabby found herself working closely with her longtime teammate Domino, as the two of them liberated a young man from a hospital prior to his mutation kicking in. Cable had a premonition in which the young man's powers would activate, destroying some of Manhattan. While Domino escorted him from the hospital, Tabby collected them in an ambulance. Unfortunately, they got stuck in a traffic jam on a bridge and, with time running out until the young man's powers would apparently activate, Boom-Boom rushed out onto the bridge to clear a path by forcing drivers and passengers to evacuate their vehicles – and then blowing them up. Fortunately, she did evacuate the civilians just before the mutant's powers activated, liquifying part of the bridge and sending dozens of cars crashing down into the river – with Tabby and Domino along with them. Despite their vastly different operating styles, the two work very well together. [Cable and X-Force #11]
The X-Force team eventually settled at a permanent headquarters. Tabby found herself in an unlikely pairing with Doctor Nemesis as she assisted him in fighting the Adversary, who had taken over Forge's body. [Cable and X-Force #15-17]
Apparently tired of the constant struggles of mutant life, Tabby and a handful of other mutants returned to the recently abandoned island Utopia, where they hoped to be left in peace as the Utopians. S.H.I.E.L.D. subsequently detected a mutant presence on the island and sent officers to investigate. However, when the officers didn't return, S.H.I.E.L.D. requested the assistance of Magik and the time-displaced young X-Men. The two teams were reluctant to fight each other, so the time-displaced Marvel Girl put Tabby and the other Utopians to sleep so that they could search for the missing S.H.I.E.L.D. officers. Eventually, the Utopians were teleported to the old Weapon X facility that the time-displaced X-Men were using as their base, dubbed the New Xavier School for Gifted Mutants. S.H.I.E.L.D., meanwhile, were confronted with the fact that the Avengers were allowed to set up home wherever they wanted, but mutants were always investigated and forced out. [All-New X-Men (1st series) #40-41]
Boom-Boom and members of the Utopians later stood at Cyclops' side at Washington D.C when Cyclops announced that a mutant revolution was coming. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #600]
During the crisis when Hydra took control of the United States, a new sovereign state called New Tian was established specifically for mutants. Boom-Boom joined other mutants on New Tian. This was also a time when the relationship between mutants and Inhumans was very fragile. Boom-Boom and other former New Mutants, Magik and Rictor, were part of a group of mutants who were on hand when several Inhumans searching for an Inhuman child ventured into New Tian. The mutants were reluctant to help the Inhumans, considering everything the Inhumans put the mutants through, and Tabby made this perfectly clear. Unfortunately, this only led to a fight between the two groups when Boom-Boom started getting in Kamala Khan's space. [Secret Warriors (2nd series) #2-3]
Boom-Boom also worked with Magik on an operation to liberate Sunfire who had been captured. This mission saw Boom-Boom fighting Avengers who were under Hydra's control. [Secret Empire: United #1]
Boom-Boom soon found herself reunited with several other former New Mutants – Magik, Rictor and Woflsbane (along with Strong Guy) working for another former New Mutant Karma and the Hatchi Corporation. This New Mutants team was employed to investigate various supernatural incidents. Boom-Boom appeared not overly interested in participating in the team's assignments, and was more interested in sleeping, clearing her pay checks or drinking. Nevertheless, her explosive powers proved most useful in dealing with zombie hordes and other magical threats.
In fact, it was Tabby's love of sleeping that caused her to miss much of a battle between Magik and Karma after Magik had discovered the true reason for the team's purpose – Karma's brother, Tran, had been secretly living inside Karma and influencing her to collect supernatural items as part of a plan to weaponize mutants. Tabby couldn't even assist in the final battle because Magik teleported her, Rictor and Shatterstar away, preventing them from being assimilated by an unstable Warlock and saving them from a painful future in the process.
