Xuân was growing frustrated by her inability to find her siblings and became much more aggressive as she resumed her quest to find them. She traced their whereabouts to the Hellfire Club but she was too late. Leong and Nga had ended up in the hands of Shinobi Shaw, who had been experimenting on them to find a way to remove the mutant x-factor. By the time Karma reached him, Shinobi had already sold the twins to Spiral and Viper. With the aid of Cannonball and the Beast, Karma confronted the villains. Working on Viper's behalf, Spiral had used her other-dimensional technology to artificially age, genetically alter, and brainwash the children. Viper held a long-standing grudge against Karma’s family, as she had been a slave to General Ngoc Coy in the past. When Tran worked for their uncle, he had possessed the Viper to make her serve in Nguyen's harem. Xuân and the twins were an obvious target in Viper's quest for revenge, despite the fact that she had ended Tran’s life and effectively released Viper from his influence. The heroes eventually rescued Leong and Nga from the clutches of Spiral and the Viper, though the Beast found it beyond his skills to undo the significant genetic modifications the children had undergone in Spiral's Body Shoppe. Xuân left with them, trying to cope with the situation and determined to find a means of restoring them. [X-Force (1st series) #62, Beast #1-3]

Soon afterwards, Xuân was reunited with her former teammates from the New Mutants for a celebration. They were unexpectedly joined by their younger selves, time-traveling via Magik's powers. The youngsters were shocked to learn that Magik would eventually die of the Legacy Virus. The younger team of New Mutants attempted to save Illyana with the help of her long-lost brother, Mikhail Rasputin. The modern versions were reluctant to assist in this effort to change the past. To everyone's surprise, Karma turned against her friends, refusing to see another family torn apart if she could prevent it. In battle against her best friends, Xuân erected defensive psi-shields suggesting that she might be expanding her telepathic potential in ways that Professor X had suggested were possible as her powers matured. [New Mutants: Truth or Death #1-3]

Karma later met X-Force during a desert rave festival in Burning River Canyon. She had changed quite a bit since they had last seen her. She had dyed her hair pink, added a few body piercings, and was accompanied by two friends who were implied to be lesbians. In fact, Xuân hinted that she might be a lesbian herself in comments she made to Dani Moonstar. Their fun was interrupted by their old foe Selene. During the fight against the Black Queen, Karma showed how much her powers had grown when she possessed the entire crowd of panicked revelers. During this unexpected reunion, Karma mentioned that she had finally found a doctor able to undo the damage her siblings had suffered. Xuân was clearly elated but did not reveal who this genius benefactor might be. [X-Force (1st series) #75]

When the children’s treatment was finished, Xuân returned to a more conservative look and moved her family to Chicago, where she attended and worked at the University of Chicago while completing a degree in library science and teaching.  After all the drama in their lives, Xuân worked hard to give her siblings something resembling a normal life. While living in Chicago, Xuân reconnected with and quickly grew close to another alumni of Xavier’s school: Kitty Pryde AKA Shadowcat. Xuân, Kitty and two new friends – the Genoshan telekinetic Shola Inkosi and the former anti-mutant activist Tom More – joined forces to end the threat of a group of advanced Sentinels, who were killing mutants (and several humans) in Chicago. Throughout their adventures, Xuân expressed her doubts about their ability to truly live in the “real world”. Within a setting like Xavier’s school, they could be safe among their own kind. But outside of this, mutants always seemed to become mere victims and she had grown tired of this. [Mekanix #1-6]

Karma’s friendship with Kitty teetered on the brink of something more. Xuân was clearly interested, but Kitty wasn't sure how she felt. While working in the library, Xuân befriended a bright high school graduate, David Alleyne, who was already taking summer courses at the university. Unbeknownst to her, David was a mutant who could assimilate the knowledge of those around him. Dani Moonstar, who had recently started working as a teacher at Xavier’s, arrived in Chicago on an assignment to recruit David. Dani's visit coincided with Xuân’s graduation day and Dani made a point of attending in support of her old friend. Moonstar aided David against some mutant haters and then extended an offer to Xuân to join the staff at Xavier's recently expanded school. Xuân agreed to move to the school with her siblings and Xavier hired her as a French teacher and librarian. [New Mutants (2nd series) #4-5]

Xuân proved to be a calming and steadying influence on Dani, as well as several of the kids who comprised the student body. When Dani made an error in judgment, causing one of her students to quit, she was on the verge of resigning. It was Karma who convinced her to stay. As the Institute grew, it was Xuân who suggested to Xavier that he should let the students pick their own advisor. [New Mutants (2nd series) #6]

When Dani tried to set Xuân up with Luna dePaula, the owner of the nearby Grind Stone coffee shop, Xuân found Dani’s behavior somewhat offensive. Although she had confided in her friend regarding her sexual orientation, she did not feel that gave Dani the right to play matchmaker. [New Mutants (2nd series) #8]

A new term started at the school, with Cyclops and Emma Frost serving as the new headmasters. The entire student body was re-organized and assigned to training squads of six members, each supervised by a senior X-Man or member of the teaching staff. Karma was not assigned her own squad but was responsible for mentoring the mutant kids assigned to the Lower School. These mutants, including Karma's siblings, were too young to begin combat training. Given her mature outlook, parenting experience and educational background, Xuân was a natural choice for this role. [New X-Men: Academy X #7]

When Northstar was tragically slain, Karma stepped in to mentor his squad of students, Alpha Squadron. Among these was her former advisee, Victor Borkowski AKA Anole. Victor had a formed special bond with Northstar, because he too was gay and had confided in Jean-Paul. Xuân did her best to counsel Alpha Squadron as they dealt with their loss, particularly Anole. Karma even gave Alpha Squadron a sneak peak of the memorial statue of Northstar and made a touching eulogy at his funeral. [New X-Men: Academy X #13]

Karma began to feel stretched thin in her administrative duties when Wolfsbane made a sudden departure from the Academy, leaving Karma to step in as mentor for her squad, the Paragons. This meant that Karma now had two squads under her supervision, neither of which particularly wanted her, and had to look after the Lower School as well. Unable to adequately handle all this on her own, Karma tried to get Wolfsbane to return to the Academy. She met her in Mutant Town but despite her best efforts, she could not persuade Rahne to return. [New X-Men: Academy X #14-15]
