In the meantime, Callisto had been visited by a mysterious benefactor, who injected her with something that caused her condition to stabilize. As a result, Marrow was now free to take both Warren and Callisto's advice, and return to the mansion. She arrived right in the middle of an attack, as the X-Men were facing a demonic race called the Ru'Tai. Along with the others, Marrow was transported to the Ru'Tai dimension, where she aided in the battle with their leader Pilgrim, even completing a fastball special with Maggott. After the fight, Marrow called herself an X-Man for the first time. Following the incident, Marrow allowed Cecilia to examine her for the first time, when an unknowing Sam walks in. Making no effort to cover her naked breasts, Marrow took the opportunity to embarrass the man, hinting at her growing crush for the country boy. [X-Men (2nd series) #75-76]

Next, the X-Men traveled to Africa to aid Storm in her fight against the menace of Ananasi, or actually the Shadow King, in one of his many guises. After separating the team, the trickster tried to lure the newer X-Men, Maggott, Cecilia and Marrow, to his side by promising them their heart’s desire. For Marrow, it was to be beautiful and to be rid of the painful bone growth. The Shadow King even gave her a brief glimpse of this life, only to take it away again, so that she would start attacking her teammates. However, Marrow didn’t like being toyed around with and had no intention to join the Shadow King. Instead, she helped Cannonball through the psychic nightmare he was trapped in. [X-Men (2nd series) #77-78]

Marrow's feelings for Cannonball grew deeper rather quickly, which was no surprise, considering that it was the first crush the young girl has had in her life. She really felt like she could fit in with the X-Men, when her life was turned upside down again. First, Sarah overheard a phone call in which Sam promised his mother that he return home for some time to help her overcome an illness. As if that wasn’t enough, a fully recovered Callisto came to Xavier’s mansion to make her goodbyes and not, as Marrow believed, to pick her up. Feeling unwanted and alone, Sarah went on a rampage through the streets of New York, attacking the “beautiful people” once more, but this time showing restraint, not harming but only scaring. Eventually, Cannonball caught up with her and, after a brief fight, managed to talk some sense into her, when they were interrupted by two police officers whom Marrow had attacked during Operation: Zero Tolerance. They told her how she had ruined their lives and, for the first time, Marrow realized that her actions had consequences for others, that everyone had their personal problems and shortcomings to deal with, regardless of them being “beautiful surface people” or Morlocks. With Cannonball's support, Marrow genuinely apologized to the officers, right in time for Storm and Callisto’s arrival. Storm and Marrow were finally able to call a truce, and Sarah remained with the X-Men, parting ways with Callisto, who said she had other matters to attend to. [X-Men (2nd series) #79]

Cannonball wasn’t the only X-Man to quit and, if not for the return of Nightcrawler, Colossus and Shadowcat (following Excalibur’s disbanding), the team would have been seriously understaffed. For Marrow, this meant that she had to prove herself to new teammates, especially Colossus, who had seen her terrorist activities firsthand, when she was still leader of Gene Nation. When he reminded the former Morlock about that, Marrow got back at him, taunting him with some knowledge she had of his brother Mikhail. Regardless, Colossus helped Sarah during a mission, pulling some shattered bones from her back to make room for new ones to grow. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #360, X-Men (2nd series) #80]

Back at the mansion, Marrow was then caught stealing Colossus' sketchbook and she confessed that she liked the pictures he drew. Turned out, she had even decorated her room with pictures of beautiful women from magazines, showing her need to be one of the pretty people she so despised. However, Colossus promised not to the embarrassed Marrow over what he had seen, and even made a beautiful sketch of her, thus creating the beginning of a bond between the two. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #361]

Shortly after Gambit rejoined the team, the X-Men followed two readings that seemed to match the missing Xavier’s brainwave patterns. One of them turned out to be Cerebro, which had gained sentience when it was affected the Prime Sentinels’ nano-technology. According to its programming, Cerebro wanted to catalogue all mutants it registered – literally. Marrow was among several X-Men captured and put on stasis by Cerebro, though eventually they were rescued and happily reunited with their long-lost mentor. [Hunt for Xavier crossover]

It seemed that life with the X-Men was beginning to affect Sarah, for as Christmas descended upon the team, she decided to do something nice for Colossus because of the picture he had drawn for her. Noting certain similarities between Colossus and his brother, Mikhail, Marrow’s former leader, Marrow attempted to make her first real friend outside of Callisto. Secretly, she stole some of his sketches, only to return them with bits of story about an Ice Princess written next to them. When Christmas morning finally came, Sarah revealed herself as the "ghost," who was writing the story and handed Piotr the final page of the tale. The main character of the story was a girl who lost her face. When it was returned to her, she realized that being beautiful is not as important as having a family and friends. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #365]

Marrow really grew into her role as an X-Man and, when she happened upon a terrorist group planting a bomb in New York’s sewers, she alerted the team to it in her own unique way – by throwing a dead rat in Kitty Pryde’s bed for her to wake up. In fact, despite her being closest in age, Shadowcat was the one X-Man that Marrow got along with least, the young Morlock blocking out every of Kitty’s attempt to bond with her. Sarah was convinced that Kitty could not relate to her because she was pretty and could blend in perfectly with the rest of humanity. During the X-Men’s fight with the terrorists, Shadowcat and Marrow became separated from the team and, saving each other’s life, they reached an understanding. [X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #22]

When the newspapers reported about several incidents whereupon people had been kidnapped into the sewers beneath the city, Marrow decided to get involved, despite Storm’s objections. Marrow arrived in New York right as an angry mob was about to enter the Tunnels, and she feared that they might run into some of the few Morlocks still living there and kill them. Spider-Man stopped her from attacking these humans and, albeit reluctantly, they entered the tunnels together to investigate. Turned out that a vampire-like creature called Hunger was behind the kidnappings, there being humans and Morlocks like Callisto being among his victims. As Marrow and Spider-Man started freeing the captured people, they were attacked by Hunger as well, and it took quite a while to beat him. During the fight, one of the humans had jumped on Hunger from behind, at least distracting him a bit, and Marrow was left in awe that a human and complete stranger had actually aided her. Shortly after her return to Westchester, the X-Men were transported against their will to a strange dimension with different laws of physics, affecting their powers in unexpected way. Losing control over the flight path of his cards, Gambit accidentally seriously injured Marrow. [X-Men (2nd series) #88] She was still unconscious by the time the X-Men had completed their mission and were transported back to their own universe. However, they ended up a few years in the past and several light-years away on the Skrull homeworld - in a training camp for Skrull spies. It was all for nothing, as Galactus arrived to destroy the Skrull world. Gambit grew increasingly worried about the critically injured Marrow – he felt especially protective about the former Morlock girl, considering his past (him having rescued her from the Morlock Massacre despite Marrow not being aware of Gambit’s role in it). Taking her to a Skrull clinic, he placed her in a healing device. When she emerged from the machine, it had not only healed her, but also to given her control of her painful bone-growing mutation and a more pleasant look. Additionally, she could now shoot bones from her body in an offensive manner. Eventually, the X-Men found a way not only to return to Earth but also to the right year. Back home, Colossus reassured Marrow that she was now beautiful, and she soon adjusted to her new appearance. She even started flirting way with her savior, Gambit, in a playful manner and showed the X-Men a new side of her – happiness. Marrow also reveled in her newfound control of her powers, being able to create small bone tools from her fingertips. [ Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #371, X-Men (2nd series) #91]

Xavier apparently believed there were still higher levels that Marrow could reach, and he was right. When he pushed her harder, she was able to retract the bone horns that still protruded from her skull, although it caused her great pain. The Professor tried to get her to do it again, but the two were interrupted by Gambit, who was appalled by the way Xavier was acting, as he had been pushing the entire team to their limits. What none of the X-Men knew at the time was that Xavier had sensed a traitor among their midst, although he was unable to determine which one of them was it. So, he was left with no other choice than to disband the X-Men. Gambit angrily stormed out of the mansion but, when Marrow wanted to accompany him, he pushed her aside. Instead, she accepted Colossus’ invitation to accompany him on a road trip to Boston. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #372, X-Men (2nd series) #92]
