NIGHTCRAWLER: Page 3 of 8

BIOGRAPHY - Page 3

During a three-way battle between the X-Men, the Lords Cardinal of the Inner Circle and the super-Sentinel Nimrod, Nightcrawler's teleportation ability was severely thrown out of whack when he attempted to damage the mutant hunting robot by teleporting away with a large chunk of it. However, Nimrod had been defeated by this move once before and now had measures to counter this particular move. Nimrod injured Nightcrawler with an energy signature disruption. Kurt disintegrated, screaming in agony, leaving the X-Men with no way of knowing if he even survived the attack. Regrettably, this would not be Nightcrawler's final encounter with the lethal robot. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #208-209]

Kurt wound up near the harbor of New York, with his mutant powers diminished. He could only manage a few jumps. When the other X-Men found him, he was about to be killed by an angry mob, as he was too exhausted to teleport. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #210]

He was still in this weakened state when the Mutant Massacre began and, although Kurt managed to take out the Marauder named Vertigo, he failed to notice that Riptide was sneaking up to him. Wolverine tried to warn him in time but his teleportation power again failed and Nightcrawler was subsequently beaten and slashed by Riptide, leaving him barely alive. Moira MacTaggert did her best, but Kurt was comatose for many weeks and, like his fellow wounded X-Men, Colossus and Shadowcat, he was transferred to the medical center of Muir Island. After a few months, Nightcrawler awoke only to hear of the X-Men's apparent death in Dallas during his absence. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #227]

Kurt and Shadowcat stayed on at Muir Island to continue their recuperation for the following weeks.

Nightcrawler soon discovered new limits to his teleporting. He was only capable of 'porting once in a 24 hour period without threat of seriously injuring himself.

Due to a series of events orchestrated by the Omniversal Majestrix, Roma, and her agent, Saturnyne, Kurt and Kitty were united with Captain Britain and Meggan in battle with Mojo's Warwolves and the bounty hunting Technet, both of whom were after the former X-Man, Rachel "Phoenix" Summers, who had just escaped from the Mojoverse. Deciding to remain together, these five heroes joined forces as the England-based team known as Excalibur and used Brian's lighthouse as a base of operations. [Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn]

Almost from day one, Kurt was attracted to his teammate, Meggan, whose refreshing naivety and empathic shapeshifting made her look like the ideal partner. Meggan seemed to respond to his affection, especially after her lover, Brian, began drinking too much and spending more and more time with his former girlfriend, Courtney Ross. Although they almost kissed in a few occasions, Kurt and Meggan never gave in to temptation. [Excalibur (1st series) #4]

An early encounter with a Nazi version of Excalibur led the group on a journey through a variety of different realities, the so-called Cross-Time Caper. On of the realities the team passed through was a barbarian place reminiscent of Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter of Mars novels, inhabited by humanoid dragons and a race of pirate people looking very much like Nightcrawler. Despite this unexplained resemblance, Kurt accidentally sided with the wrong party when let himself be seduced by a beautiful blond woman named Anjulie. As it turned out, previously Anjulie had overthrown the pirates' king, outlawed his daughter Kymri and enslaved their people. Once Nightcrawler learned the truth, he of course helped Kymri in taking back the throne that was rightfully hers. Before departing from this world, Excalibur held a tournament in which they picked a hero to protect the realm. In the end, Kymri was one of the pair of champions who jointly took on this mantle. Though the team lost Shadowcat during the Cross-Time Caper, they all eventually made it back to the main universe's Earth and, not before long, Excalibur reunited. Nightcrawler took some time off for some well-deserved vacation in the South Pacific, but his plane crash-landed on a small island, inhabited by savages. Kurt was rather surprised to find statues resembling him and the other X-Men, though from some cave paintings he understood that the natives had witnessed the team's battle with the mutant island Krakoa. However, that was not all of it. When Krakoa was hurled into space, it released some spores, one of which had landed on this island. In regular intervals the natives had to offer one of their own to Krakoa's son, but Nightcrawler interrupted the ceremony and rescued the woman who was intended to be sacrificed. Krakoa's son tried to fight Kurt with imitations of the X-Men, all grown from various materials found in the island's ground or vegetation, but Nightcrawler emerged victorious when he tricked Krakoa's son into following him into the ocean. Having no more landmass to draw from, the creature dissolved. [Excalibur (1st series) #31]

When Dr. Doom asked Excalibur for help, they accompanied him to a nether realm, where the Latverian monarch wanted to retrieve the soul of his mother. Yet, after they found out Doom intended to betray them, Excalibur opposed him. During the battle, Nightcrawler's full range of teleportation was restored when the Latverian used an E.M. scrambler on Kurt to disrupt his power, but accidentally realigned it to its proper configuration.
