Elizabeth Twoyoungmen was born to Kathryn Twoyoungmen and her husband, Michael, Canada’s foremost surgeon. Living in the district of Haysboro, Calgary, she grew up next door to Heather McNeil and her family.  As Heather was several years older than Elizabeth, she would often baby-sit her. While Elizabeth was still a young girl, her mother became very sick with cancer and Michael promised his daughter that he would save her mother. However, despite his best efforts, Kathryn died. Heartbroken, Elizabeth called her father a “liar” and told him that she hated him and never wanted to see him again. Despite Michael’s protests that they already had seven children and another on the way, Ramsey McNeil insisted he and his wife take in Elizabeth until such time that she was ready to go back to her father. [backstory in Alpha Flight (1st series) #5]

But Elizabeth and her father did not reconcile and she remained with the McNeil’s, forming a close friendship with Heather. At one point, Heather got her first job and moved out, and, after marrying against her parents wishes, she would no longer visit. Several years later, Elizabeth started attending college. Training as an archeologist, she was helping unearth the remains of the original Fort Calgary. It was there that Elizabeth discovered a skull and, as she had inherited great mystical potential, Elizabeth was the only witness to an apparition: Ranaq the Devourer, one of the Great Beasts. In addition, Elizabeth was also able to recognize the super hero from Alpha Flight, Shaman, as her father, despite the spell Shaman cast in order to prevent anyone from recognizing him. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #14-15]

Elizabeth visited her father, a big shock for him, and after a very to-the-point reunion, the two traced a mystical trail to a man called Lucas Strange, whose great-granddaughter, Emily, had become possessed by Ranaq.

As Emily attacked Elizabeth, Ranaq’s power inadvertently released Elizabeth’s own mystical talents, where she was able to instinctively turn Ranaq’s power against him, thus defeating him.

When Snowbird kneeled down before, Elizabeth, recognizing her as the long Prophesied One, a being of omnipotent power, Shaman also had Elizabeth look into his medicine pouch, something no one could do and stay sane. However, not only did Elizabeth survive,  but she also pulled from the pouch a mystical coronet, known as the Circlet of Enchantment. Slightly bewildered by everything that had been occurring, Elizabeth obeyed her father when he told her to put the circlet upon her brow, where she instantly became clothed in an appropriate costume. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #18-19]

Elizabeth was confused and not comfortable with having to fulfill some ancient prophecy about the forthcoming of the Talisman, a being of immense power. When Snowbird demanded that she needed to be tutored in her new responsibilities, Elizabeth wanted to remove the headband and go back to being the art-college student she was before, though she found that she couldn’t. Her attempt to take off the coronet caused her incredible pain and Shaman apologized for not having informed her of these consequences before. Having no other option, Talisman joined Alpha Flight, where she easily became one of the most powerful members of any line-up, rivaling her father, Guardian, Vindicator and Snowbird herself. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #20]

Talisman was an immense asset to the X-Men and Alpha Flight during their war with Loki, who had created a magical fountain that could provide superhuman powers, though in return did not only slowly kill all magic users,  but also took away the imagination and dreams of those it transformed. Despite almost having to sacrifice herself in the process, Talisman eventually managed to convince the humans changed by the Fire Fountain that the gifts bestowed on them would only change the world for the worse. It was during this event that Elizabeth first displayed her snobbish personality. [X-Men & Alpha Flight (1st series) #1-2]

Following a training session with Judd, Talisman and several other members of Alpha Flight engaged the villain known as Caliber in battle, which quickly came to an end when Snowbird was forced to attack Sasquatch because he was one of the Great Beasts. Elizabeth admitted to sensing something amiss with Sasquatch and, when she tried to control him, the Great Beast within him, Tanaraq, repelled her. In the realm of the Great Beasts, to save at least Walter Langkowski’s soul, Talisman was forced to join Northstar and Aurora, as those who hate, love and are of great power in restoring Walter to life. However, it was a trick of the Beasts and actually all three of them almost died when their life essences were drained from their bodies, but their teammate’s timely intervention saved them. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #22-24]
