Warlock eventually parted ways with his friends and made his way back to his homeworld of Kvch. Upon arriving, he discovered all the adult Technarch had left the planet in search of more lifeglow, leaving only a single infant behind. Warlock decided to infect the infant, Tyro, with his own passive strain of the transmode virus in the hopes that it would reduce the aggressive nature that plagued the race. Warlock began to raise Tyro as if he was his own child, attempting to help the child overcome his compulsive violent urges, but it was an uphill struggle.
One day, Warlock’s training with Tyro was interrupted by the arrival of Nova, aka Richard Rider, who was infected with his own version of the transmode virus. Nova explained that the Phalanx, an offshoot of the Techncarch, was spreading their influence across the galaxy and was waging a war against the Kree. Nova had been infected with the virus and came to Kvch, looking to purge it from his system and potentially find a way to defeat the Phalanx as well. Warlock shared some of his own lifeglow with Nova to help him temporarily fight the virus, but he regretfully told the man that he could not help in his war. Warlock had vowed never to completely drain the lifeglow of another to sustain himself, a lesson he was desperately trying to get Tyro to follow.
Warlock was forced to reevaluate his situation when some of Nova’s allies, who were also infected with the virus, involuntarily summoned a Siredam, an adult Technarch, to the planet. Warlock knew that Tyro was still too young to fight against an adult, so he ordered his son to flee the planet as fast as he could. Knowing that he needed to buy Tyro time, he used all his lifeglow to purge the virus from Nova, allowing the man to fully access his Nova Force. With his lifeglow gone, Warlock died, but not before making Nova promise that he would fight the Siredam and stall it long enough for Tyro to escape. Nova did just that and fought with all his might but was shocked when Tyro suddenly returned to the planet, looking to fight the Siredam himself. As Tyro was so young, the fight was quick, with the juvenile being swallowed by the adult. However, much to Nova’s surprise, Tyro’s programming took control of the Siredam and the young Technarch found himself inhabiting the adult’s body. With access to a massive store of lifeglow, Tyro used some on his father, bringing Warlock back to life. Warlock was stunned to see his son had taken over the adult Technarch and surmised that his passive mutant code had been too much for the adult to handle. With Tyro in a much stronger body and access to large amounts of lifeglow, Warlock decided to help Nova rid the galaxy of the Phalanx. [Nova (4th series) #11-12]
Warlock and Tyro joined Nova and headed for Kree Space, where they discovered an energy barrier erected around it. To make matters worse, the robotic Ultron had become involved and was planning on merging his programming with the Phalanx to create an even more powerful race. Breaking through the energy barriers, the group joined up on Hala with their allies, who were in the middle of fighting against Ultron’s forces. Ultron himself had merged programming with the biological form of Warlock’s cosmic namesake, Adam Warlock. Despite his jovial nature, Warlock was a force to be reckoned with and took Ultron on himself. Warlock wasn’t physically powerful enough to defeat Ultron, so he infected the villain’s body with his own passive version of the transmode virus. Unable to deal with Warlock’s mutant virus, Ultron’s mind fled the body, leaving the husk of Adam Warlock behind.
This was the turning point in the battle, as the combined might of Warlock, Nova, Adam and the other heroes defeated Ultron and put a stop to the Phalanx’s spread. In the aftermath, Warlock and Tyro travelled the galaxy, purging the transmode virus from all who had been infected. [Annihilation: Conquest #6]
The events with Nova and Tyro had reminded Warlock of the good times he had with the New Mutants. Parting ways with Tyro and heading to Earth, Warlock made his way to the X-Mansion, where he was dismayed to discover it in ruins, with no sign of his friends. What worried him even more was the fact Cypher’s grave had been opened up and his body was missing. Unsure of what to do, he didn’t have long to wait, as he began to pick up an unusual signal being broadcast. When he connected to it, he discovered it originating from Cypher, with his former friend now being controlled by a malicious version of the transmode virus. Knowing that his friend needed help, Warlock headed to the source of the signal, which was the X-Men’s new island base of Utopia. He arrived just in time to find Doug being attacked by his former New Mutant teammates, and so Warlock instinctively went to save him.
What he didn’t know was that Doug had been resurrected by Selene, using a modified version of the virus, and now the man was slave to her whims. Warlock attempted to use his own virus to override the one inside Doug, but he underestimated its strength and how coopted his friend was. Doug fought back with his own virus and attacked the weakened Warlock, destroying his body and leaving him for dead. Doug ripped off Warlock’s head and threw it into the sea, where the Technarch used the remaining bit of his energy to drain the lifeglow from nearby plankton. This was enough to bring him back and he began to absorb the lifeglow of non-sentient sea creatures until his head was strong enough it could grow rudimentary legs. Crawling onto land like a crab, he continued to feed until he managed to form a frail body for himself. He was still fighting against the code Cypher had infected him with, but an encounter with Magik and her Soulsword purged it from his system. Realizing that Cypher’s virus was corrupted by sorcery, Warlock found his friend and confronted him once more. Doug’s previous interaction with Warlock was influencing him as he was now fighting against the Technarch’s passive mutant virus. Warlock helped him overcome Selene’s influence by merging his body with Magik’s Soulsword and stabbing Doug. The virus was purged from his system and Doug was finally free of Selene’s control. [New Mutants (3rd series) #5-8]
In the aftermath of Selene’s attack, Warlock and Cypher were kept under close observation until they could be trusted. Due to the extensive damage Warlock had sustained, his body was still weak but he refused to take anyone’s lifeglow. Instead, he relied on the non-sentient biological material around the island. As the New Mutants had reformed, both Warlock and Cypher rejoined them and for the first time in many years Warlock had all his family back again. [New Mutants (3rd series) #9]
Warlock was forced to hit the ground running as many things had changed in the years he had been gone. Much of the mutant race had been depowered, and the only child born with powers had been sent to the future to be raised in supposed safety with Cable. When Cable and the child, now named Hope, returned to the present, the X-Men weren’t the only ones looking to get a hold of her. The robotic Bastion had amassed his own forces, comprising of many human agents aiding his quest to kill Hope. Warlock and the New Mutants were sent to investigate a weapons manufacturing plant being used by Bastion but, when they infiltrated it, they discovered it was being run by Cameron Hodge and the Right. The team ended up in an all-out battle with the paramilitary organization, and things got worse when Hodge revealed his cyborg body. The New Mutants were outnumbered and outgunned, with Karma being seriously injured by Hodge. Cypher begged Warlock to drain the lifeglow of the soldiers and, much to his reluctance, Warlock complied. Years before, Hodge had been the one to drain Warlock’s energy, effectively killing him. After dispatching the soldiers, Warlock attacked Hodge himself, draining the cyborg’s power and putting an end to his schemes once and for all. Even though he saved the day, Warlock was beside himself with guilt as he had vowed never to completely drain the lifeglow from another sentient creature. [Second Coming crossover]
After the fight was over and Warlock knew things were clear, he purged the energy he drained from Hodge as a way of penance for himself. Dani Moonstar decided the team needed a break and so they went to relax at a remote cabin. Naturally, things didn’t go the way they planned and Magik arrived, informing them that an end-of-days event was about to happen. Weak and traumatized from the fight with Hodge, Warlock asked if he needed to kill anyone again, which prompted Magik to teleport him to Utopia for his own good. Magik took the rest of the team to Limbo to try and stop the Elder Gods from entering the dimension and destroying all of existence. Warlock relayed the information to Cyclops, who mounted an attack force to help. [New Mutants (3rd series) #15, 17-21]
Warlock and the New Mutants continued working as an offshoot of the X-Men, dealing with situations, such as finding the missing Nate Grey, as well as helping out the Asgardians when they needed it. [New Mutants (3rd series) #25-32]
On a mission to find another missing mutant, Blink, the team were drawn into the mystery surrounding a heavy metal band that caused natural disasters wherever they went. During one of their shows, the New Mutants’ plane was struck by otherworldly lightning, causing Warlock to be badly affected. When he recovered, he told the team that the energy from the lightning came from another dimension, but he was now able to track it. They split up, with Warlock taking Cypher to discover the source of the energy, which they located on the band’s tour bus. The two found a glowing box but, when they opened it, Warlock was hit with another surge of energy, knocking him out. When he woke up, he discovered Cypher and the box were gone and the band had begun to play again, signaling the start of another disaster. Fortunately, Cypher made his way back to the team with a box containing a strange inter-dimension creature. Warlock could sense it was the source of all the disasters and so he wrapped Blink in a protective suit and she teleported him into space, where he threw the box away from Earth. The disasters were over and the team celebrated, though Warlock was unaware that Cypher’s exposure to the creature would have deadly consequences for him in the future. [New Mutants (3rd series) #33-36]
Not long after, when the rest of the team was away, Warlock answered the door to find one of Hela’s servants before him. She handed him a Hel-Pup, a demonic puppy, and claimed it was a gift for the team for helping out with earlier troubles in Asgard. Warlock took the puppy in but decided to keep it a secret from the rest of the team. [Journey into Mystery #632, New Mutants (3rd series) #37]
