In circumstances not completely revealed, Heather returned to Mac, although it was not clear whether Heather rejoined Alpha Flight. When Mac was sent on an assignment for Department H, he was vague about the details and, given how rough things were between them, Heather did not want to press him for details. When he seemingly went missing, Heather contacted Wolverine, who immediately came to her aid, what happened between them during the Unity crisis either forgotten or forgiven. When they discovered that Mac had been attacked by a Wendigo, Wolverine ordered Heather to turn and get help from everyone – Alpha Flight, X-Men… everyone. However, before she could contact anyone, Heather was attacked by a Wendigo, whose bite transformed her into a Wendigo as well.
Eventually, the combined forces of Alpha Flight and the X-Men were able to stop the Great Beast Tanaraq, the source of the Wendigo outbreak, and lift the curse altogether. Amazingly, Heather was restored to normal following the curse’s lift and appeared none the worse for wear when she showed up at Mac's side when he was recovering from injuries he sustained during the attack. On a more personal level, it seemed the crisis had brought the two closer together and Wolverine couldn’t remember a time they had looked so happy. [Amazing X-Men (2nd series) #8, 12]
Heather was not with Alpha Flight when they next appeared, defending Canada against another crisis. Similarly, when the Alpha Flight name was re-purposed as the Alpha Flight Space Station, a high-tech facility based in Earth's orbit and dedicated to defending the planet against alien incursions, Heather was not part of the Space Station crew. Nor was she seen with any of the ground-based Alpha Flight members, including her husband, Guardian, who never spoke about Heather or the status of their relationship.
At some point, Heather came to possess the mysterious Onyx Sword and the striking black and red costume worn by the anti-hero called Nemesis. One difference between Heather and the previous wielders of the blade is that she was alive, while they were dead. Because the Onyx Blade would enable its dead wielders to return to life due to a transference of life force of those killed, in Heather's case, the sword instead drew life force from her. With the rise of anti-mutant hysteria following the formation of the mutant-nation Krakoa, the Canadian government and Department H, under the rule of the dictator-like Erika Dorion, soon redirected resources back to the ground-based Alpha Flight team. Working in cooperation with the organization Orchis, Department H focused efforts on a small team of classic Alpha Flight members who would protect Canada from the “mutant menace.” These mutants would be rounded up and extradited from Canada, following an all-out ban on mutants within the great nation. As Nemesis, Heather began working with three mutants who survived the Hellfire Gala massacre, her former teammates Northstar and Aurora, and Aurora's partner Fang. She kept her identity secret to everyone but the three of them, and the group began operating out of Krakoa North, a hidden facility in the Canadian wilderness.
The renegade Alphans would rescue mutants and keep them safe until they could be transported to Chandilar, which had agreed to take Canada's mutant refugees. Unbeknownst to Department H, the official Alpha Flight team – Guardian, Puck, Shaman and Snowbird – were secretly working with the renegade Alphans. The two groups would put on a show for the public (and Department H), but the renegade Alphans would escape with any rescued mutants. Nemesis' Onyx Blade enabled Heather to teleport her teammates across Canada with ease. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #1]
However, the ongoing use of the Onyx Blade to teleport would impact heavily on Heather, draining her of her life force and leaving her needing to spend much time recovering afterwards. But time was of the essence and, when former Alpha Flight associate Feedback was targeted by Department H, Heather teleported her teammates to the United States, where Feedback was currently hiding out. While her teammates battled several of Department H's new Box Sentinels, Heather spoke with Feedback and was able to teleport him and her teammates away back to Canada. However, as she teleported out, one of the Box Sentinels struck her with a close-range blast. This resulted in Heather only being able to teleport the others part-way, to a forest in Manitoba.
Her teammates were concerned for her safety, as her wounds were serious, but Heather assured them she only needed a short time to recover. Unfortunately, despite claiming she was ready to teleport everyone back to Krakoa North, she collapsed in Aurora's arms. Aurora unmasked her, ascertaining that Heather was actually dying – just as Guardian and the rest of Alpha Flight arrived on scene. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #2-3]
As part of a ploy to escape Department H's Box Sentinels, Northstar, Aurora and Fang fled with Heather before the Box Sentinels arrived, leaving the rescued Feedback with Alpha Flight, who claimed the others escaped. In truth, Heather and the others didn't make it far, needing more time for Nemesis to recover. However, as Heather gathered herself, tragedy struck at Krakoa North. One of the rescued mutants had departed Krakoa North and exposed the location of the secret facility to Department H, who sent Box Sentinels to apprehend everyone. Heather and her teammates arrived, too late to prevent the death of one of the mutants, but in time to start taking out the Box Sentinels.
The other Alpha Flight members finally exposed their betrayal to Department H and arrived at Krakoa North, where they engaged the Box Sentinels, too. Unfortunately, there were too many Box Sentinels and, despite her weakened state, Heather decided that the only choice was for her to teleport the mutants to safety. After saying goodbye to Guardian and asking him to tell their daughter that she loved her, Heather summoned all of her strength to teleport Northstar, Aurora, Fang, Feedback and the rescued mutants to the Alpha Flight Space Station, where a vessel was waiting to take the rescued mutants to Chandilar.
Heather collapsed in Guardian's arms, pleased that her actions meant the mutants escaped. As Box Sentinels closed in on Guardian and his teammates, they were all taken into custody. Heather was placed in medical care, her injuries so serious that it was not known if she would recover. However, Director Dorion made it quite clear, that if she did, Heather Hudson would be made to stand trial for her “crimes” against Canada. [Alpha Flight (5th series) #4-5]
With Canada's greatest hero now in custody, time will tell as to whether indeed she will be held accountable for not only her defiance against Department H, but also the seemingly-forgotten murders of her cousin and his wife.
