Things Far Removed Magnetic Event Horizon With there being less contributors on the site and those few having less personal spare time at their disposal, we decided that the Magneto month would be the last event month for a very long time. That was also the reason why we wanted this specific event to shine, which is also apparent by the logo we created for it. The main part shows the variation incarnations of Magneto himself, while the add-on features his three adult children, all of which are mutants too. Season of the Witch When we were about to release the Magneto material, we came to realize that we had prepared way too many issue summaries to go along with it. That’s why we excluded a significant deal of Scarlet Witch-centric issue summaries, which we then published over the course of five weeks. The logo demonstrates how much Wanda Maximoff changed over the years as a character. X-Mas Down Under This logo actually combines two themes in one. It not only was a good choice for the time of the year, but it also uses the X-Men roster of a very specific era in the team’s history. Having gone underground and letting the entire world believe them dead, the X-Men celebrated a rather unique Christmas in the Australian Outback by returning the stolen goods they found in the Reavers’ base to their rightful owners all over the world. The incredible feat was made more so in that they managed to do accomplish it in just one night, thanks to Longshot’s psychometric touch and Gateway’s teleportation skills. Messiah Complex The first new mutant being born after M-Day caused a desperate struggle between the X-Men, the Marauders, the Acolytes, the Reavers and the Purifiers. Each group wanted to reach the child first, each for their own reasons. Although the X-Men ultimately saved her by sending her into the future with Cable, they were betrayed by one of their own. This logo marks this drastic turning point in the mutants’ lives. They grow up so fast The logo showing the New Mutants roster during Louise Simonson’s tenure as their writer marks something new in decision-making regarding the logo design. While before it was just the two people actually working on the logos who would decide which themes were the next to be showcased, we now started accepting suggestions and requests from the remaining site staff. This specific logo, like several others further down, was suggested by Daytripper. Knights of the Round Table One year after we had used the New Excalibur logo, we realized that we had never showcased the stars of the original book – an oversight that could easily be fixed. Being huge fans of the series, Ruth and Millenniumcyke were quite happy to see this logo go live. Mutant Target Locked… Terminate To celebrate the 4000th entry of the site’s summary section, we came up with the Sentinel fortnight, two weeks in which we published crossover entries, Bring on the Bad Guys articles and spotlight entries all related to the subject. Naturally, a logo to match the mini-event was needed. As two of our staff members would later point out, it was “quite possibly the oddest assemblage of characters we’ve ever had in a logo”… “and yet it works” somehow. At least they are nice to look at Something old was to be followed by something new again… the New Exiles. Some odd ten issues after Chris Claremont had taken over the book, the title was re-launched with a new #1. Unfortunately, the fabled writer never seemed to get the hang of the Exiles as a concept. He filled the cast of the one book that could draw the most extreme and drastically changed characters from all across the multiverse with all his own creations and favorite characters: Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Sabretooth and Sage. Additionally, his greatest strength – carefully laid-out subplots that unfold over time – was out of place in a book that lived from short, self-contained arcs, each new mission being a potential jumping-on point for new readers. The art by Tom Grummet was great though. Who are these strangers staring back at me? A new logo was over-due, so a quick fix was needed. Surely the line-up of X-Men 2099 was an odd choice of theme about a decade after the series had been published. While usually there’s always at least one or two characters in a logo that every site visitor would recognize, there were even several members of the site staff, like sixhoursoflucy who had not seen any of these characters before. For those who weren’t into comics back then, Marvel’s 2099 line featured several titles all set in an alternate future in the year 2099. Some of them were quite interesting concepts and, if you are not familiar with the series, you should check them out.
