Warren and Betsy remained with the X-Men in the days that followed, until the High Evolutionary released his anti-mutation wave. Stripped of their mutant powers, the team disbanded, and Warren and Betsy went vacationing in Acapulco. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #379, X-Men (2nd series) #99] After a team of X-Men defeated the High Evolutionary and his ally, Sinister, they reversed the anti-mutation process.
Some time later, Warren and Betsy eventually returned to the team, with Psylocke soon receiving telekinetic powers after a new psi-war with the Shadow King and Phoenix. While Psylocke was a full member of the team, Archangel acted as a part-time reservist, dedicating most of his time to running Worthington Industries. [X-Men (2nd series) #101-103]
Warren and Betsy's relationship suffered from this arrangement, as Psylocke became attracted to her new teammate, Neal Shaara, Thunderbird III. Their attraction developed to such degree that they did not even care to hide their flirtation in front of Warren. Finally, Warren called it quits on Christmas, explaining the break-up with having reached a dead-end in their relationship and the two of them simply having drifted apart over the course of their hectic lives. [X-Men (2nd series) #109]
Shortly after half a dozen of X-Men, including Psylocke, left the mansion to embark on a quest for Destiny’s missing diaries, and Betsy was killed early in their quest. Feeling like neglecting his duties to the X-Men had partly contributed to Betsy's death, Warren returned to full active status with the team again. Warren even became the sponsor of an "Away Team," operating from various different locations that are provided by Worthington Industries. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #394-395]
Checking the company's finances from time to time, Warren found out that some his money was being used to fund the X-Ranch, a mutant brothel, but before the X-Men could properly investigate the property was burned down by the Church of Humanity. Only Stacy X survived and was taken in by the X-Men. Warren took her under his wing, trying to make her understand what the X-Men‘s purpose was. He even took her with him when he was provided the chance to speak for mutant rights in front of the G8 nations. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #402] Warren's intentions were entirely platonic, however, and he didn't respond when Stacy developed feelings for him.
Warren’s body underwent certain changes as a result of a developing secondary mutation when, during a battle with Black Tom Cassidy, the villain drained Warren of his life energies. His skin reverted back to its original pink hue and he began to recuperate from injuries at an accelerated rate. Returning to Westchester from this adventure, Warren was overly welcomed by Paige Guthrie, aka Husk, who had recently moved to the mansion and was apparently attracted to him. Stacy X sensed the growing attraction between the pair and jealously tried her best to embarrass Paige, but it only served to drive Warren further away, and she eventually quit the X-Men. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #411-413, 422]
With Nightcrawler not operating a peak capacity following his encounter with the Supreme Pontiff, Warren took on the role of official co-leader of the team and unofficially the team's true "boss" in the field. During the X-Men’s battle against a group of mutant werewolves called the Dominant Species, another aspect of Warren’s secondary mutation was discovered. Both he and Husk had been mortally injured by the wolves and escaped into the woods, where they passed out, lying on top of each other. Warren’s blood, now possessing miraculous healing properties, brought back Paige from the brink of death and accelerated both of their healing. The near death experience helped Warren to finally come to terms with his former lover Psylocke’s death, and he also realized how much Paige meant to him. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #417-420]
Warren was initially very reluctant to push forward with seeing Paige romantically, due in part to his role as field leader, the huge age gap between them and her ex-boyfriend, Chamber, who was also living in the mansion part-time. Despite all of these obstacles, however, Archangel and Husk grew closer together and began officially dating. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #421-424]
During a battle fought on multiple sides between the X-Men, the Dominant Species, the dimension-traveling Exiles and an evil, possessed Havok, Archangel ended up fighting a Magik from an alternate reality and claimed her Soulsword as his spoils of victory. Since both the X-Men and Exiles kept Magik from taking the sword back by force, Warren kept the sword in his possession, even after the Exiles moved on. [Exiles (1st series) #28-30]
Having used his healing blood on his teammates and friends time and again, sometimes though without success, Archangel decided to have himself fully examined at a hospital. There, the doctors uncovered that his secondary mutation came along with a twist – Warren could only share his blood’s healing properties with people who have the same blood type as he. Once that was discovered, Warren agreed to let his blood be used on a number of terminally ill children. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #427]
After a harsh battle with Nightcrawler's father, Azazel, and his followers, Archangel broke it off with Paige in a misguided attempt to distance himself from her – fearing that he couldn’t handle it should she ever die in the line of duty. When the X-Men visited the Guthrie farm in Kentucky, though, Paige's mother helped both of them through this rough patch and Warren reconciled with Paige. He realized that his decision had actually caused what he had feared most – a life without her. On an unrelated note, Warren also apologized to Logan for the first time on how he misjudged Wolverine when he first joined the X-Men. The two men put aside their old squabbles for good as friends and teammates. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #437-441]
After Xavier departed to rebuild the war-torn island nation Genosha, Cyclops was placed in charge of the X-Men and he instigated a rearrangement of team memberships and job descriptions. Archangel was sent to Genosha in order to aid Professor Xavier in his mission there but, instead, he took some time away from super heroics to concentrate on his business and relationship with Paige. [X-Men (2nd series) #157] Nevertheless, he briefly returned to the Institute when Jean Grey died and the Phoenix Force tried to resurrect her. [X-Men: Phoenix -- Endsong #1-5]
